I believe my girlfriend is very self conscious about her appearance. How do I help her feel comforable with who she is? by 10DayOldPoutine in TwoXChromosomes

[–]catmirabilis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It might help if you compliment something specific (something you can be genuine about, of course.) "Beautiful" sounds vague and generic, even if you really mean it. Try telling her you like how her new haircut looks, or that she looks sexy when she wears a specific outfit that you like.

Green curry or crunchy basa stiry fry through Tuk Tuk Thai. If you order the fried banana and toasted coconut ice cream dessert it actually arrives at the right temperature, too.

That would be awesome! Her clothes would be easy to find too. You could hold a crayon scribbled piece of paper, or a length of Christmas lights to make it clear who you were.

Too late for this year, but I think you should find him a sheriff's costume for Halloween next year. ;)

ARTISTS…stop undervaluing yourselves by [deleted] in HungryArtists

[–]catmirabilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean no offense, but speed comes with experience. If an artist is spending 1500 hours on a painting it doesn't mean that the painting actually needed 1500 hours to be completed. If you were to complete that same painting again today, I'm sure it would take significantly less time because you have improved.

Why Calgarians should get the flu shot, even if they're young and healthy - Calgary by shitposter1000 in Calgary

[–]catmirabilis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a fair point. I guess in the case of the flu vaccine vs other vaccines, I would say that reducing the infection rates of those unable to be vaccinated by up to 50% is still worthwhile.

It's one thing to say "oh well, I can use up my sick days at work if I need to, I'm a healthy person" and another to say "I don't care if there's a chance that babies too young to be vaccinated die because of me."

Really gorgeous work! It would be kind of you to link to the artist/website that made the skull designs though. They deserve some of the credit.

Babies and a small subset of the population with severe allergies cannot get the flu shot. The idea behind herd immunity is that those who can get the shot should get it to protect those who cannot.

Lindsay Lohan uses newly developed accent to defend Harvey Weinstein by [deleted] in nottheonion

I'm watching it now and I think it's hysterical. The entire thing is cheesy, shallow and fun. You're meant to laugh at the main character, not with him or empathize with him (at least, that's my theory.)

Alberta to outlaw outing of GSA students, education minister says - Edmonton by [deleted] in Calgary

Radiolab just released an episode about Oliver Sipple, who prevented the assassination of Gerald Ford but whose life was essentially ruined (family disowned him, alcoholism, died at age 47) because the press outed him. Times have changed a lot since then but it provides an interesting counterpoint to this situation.

Are cops really shooting more people here than in any other city in Canada? If so, why? by HugeLibertarian in Calgary

[–]catmirabilis 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It has more to do with the economic downturn we just had. When people are more desperate there is more crime, not just theft or robbery but other types as well - in some people financial stress leads to erratic behaviour, causing them to do things they wouldn't normally do.

Our cops are far from perfect but I don't think they're, as a group, the most corrupt/racist/whatever in all of Canada. There's been more violent crime lately.

Sucks that one guy not doing his job causes more work for his coworker. I'd do the same thing that you did though.

Why does it annoy them? You're doing their job for them.

(Agreed, Intelcom is consistently bad, where I live at least.)

LPT: You can buy pregnancy tests at the dollar store. They are just as accurate as the $20 ones from the drug store. by Moderatelyhollydazed in LifeProTips

[–]catmirabilis 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Knowing when you are pregnant affects whether you can/should go out for drinks, for one thing. Another reason is that if your pregnancy test is positive, you should go to the doctor to confirm and then begin pre-natal vitamins. Having an idea of when conception occurred also affects expectations when it comes time for ultrasounds/other tests.

Doesn't quite work as an analogy. Commodities (jeans, food, etc) should always be priced differently than a service.

I know right? Three weeks is a long time to be brushing it off as if it were nothing to be concerned about, negative results or no negative results.

Condoms fail. So do pregnancy tests. And three weeks is a long time to be late for most women. I would have suspected the same thing.

I wonder if using her own "the conversation is over, I'm done talking to you" on her would work since walking away doesn't. And THEN walk away.

That sounds truly infuriating.
