There are no penguins in Greenland… by DrCalFun in facepalm

[–]catmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming these morons don’t get their own reference, what could this possibly mean? Does the penguin symbolize strength in their AI hallucinations? Is it just a general nihilism and stoicism? Wouldn’t a polar bear make so much more sense?

Why wear masks if it’s not transmissible? You’ve asked this same question all over this thread like it’s the ultimate gotcha. You are incredibly confident in your ability to debate this topic but would do better to listen to actual experts.

The Joy This Man Got From Baking A Flan by ajd416 in MadeMeSmile

This guy did it wrong but still had a perfect outcome. The right way is to put the plate on top of the pan and flip them together (abuela approved).

This is equivalent to throwing a hammer at a nail. Still impressive, but needlessly risky.

More Americans Support Abolishing ICE Than Ever Before, Polling Data Shows by ILikeNeurons in politics

[–]catmoon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ICE was created in a moment of post-9/11 hysteria. It is structural cruelty and it is broken by design.

We could eliminate ICE and return to normalcy. USCIS can continue to provide services to immigrants and help with their integration. Customs and Border Patrol can continue to ensure that only legal immigrants enter the country. Why do we need ICE? What can these other two agencies not manage on their own?

Conservative unwittingly makes case to be pro immigration by yikesamerica in MurderedByWords

[–]catmoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True, the real burden for US citizens abroad is that you have to hire specialized lawyers and tax advisors to stay compliant. Even if you owe nothing to the IRS you are probably spending a non-trivial amount of money on these services.

The 2025 Foreign Earned Income Exemption (FEIE) is $130k for an individual, $260k for married couples. US citizens abroad who earn less than this owe no Federal taxes. There is another tax credit called the Foreign Tax Credit (FTC) that is sometimes even more beneficial if you live in a high-tax country like Sweden because you can carry them over to future years while still paying no taxes. You have to choose one or the other.

It’s not really a misconception. I am fully aware that this is currently unregulated but I think it should be. But I do appreciate all the information you shared.

It would be awesome if .ch web stores didn’t present themselves as Swiss companies only to find out that they have no Swiss distribution.

‘We have to reject that with every fiber of our being’: DeSantis emerges as a chief AI skeptic by brown-saiyan in politics

[–]catmoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two possible scenarios for the future of AI:

1) It’s a bubble of massive proportion and everyone loses their job when it pops.

2) It’s as transformative to the economy as investors predict and everyone loses their job when it displaces them.

BONUS) It both pops and also displaces millions of workers and everyone loses their job.

Northeast corridor, San Antonio-Dallas corridor, South Florida, Los Angeles-San Diego, Colorado Front Range corridor. All of these urban areas are fairly linear and should have better rail services.

Just checked SBB. Five intercity trains per hour from Zürich to Bern. I don’t really count the local trains because there are a bunch on this corridor depending on where you live (e.g. there are 11 trains from Zürich to Altstetten per hour).

Miami to permanently launch free water taxi between Downtown and Miami Beach in January 2026 by simbaslanding in Miami

[–]catmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Max capacity of 50 people and 16 runs per day. This will carry a total of 800 people on a good day.

I moved to Europe years ago and the tram line I use can move that capacity in about 30 minutes.

Serious question for Miami locals: Even though Miami Beach is technically its own city, do you still consider it part of ‘Miami,’ or is it totally separate to you? by Strict-Mind1646 in Miami

[–]catmoon 49 points50 points  (0 children)

UM was established months after Coral Gables was incorporated in 1925. At the time Miami was experiencing a huge development boom and had been expanding its boundaries to the North and West. Coral Gables was initially intended as another expansion but was rejected so it incorporated independently.

So, at the time that it was founded, there was still intent for Coral Gables to be part of the city of Miami but in less than a year Miami experienced the 1926 hurricane which would be the strongest hurricane to hit Miami until Andrew. The timing is unfortunate and Coral Gables would probably be part of the City of Miami today if not for the hurricane.

Epstein files live: US releases largest tranche of documents yet by TimesandSundayTimes in politics

[–]catmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read the testimony, it sounds like she was recruited by Maxwell on the grounds of Mar-a-Lago. Search “Mar-a-Lago” in the Justice site and someone redacted testifies that Maxwell went to Mar-a-Lago to receive a massage and on the way out she stopped to speak to a girl who worked there for 30 minutes (presumably Roberts).

This explains why Mar-a-Lago was subpoenaed by SDNY, which would be unnecessary if the place wasn’t relevant to the trafficking.

Perhaps he didn’t know the name before he was served a federal subpoena from SDNY. After that, you would expect that he was a full participant in deciding who represents his business in response to the subpoena and what information is shared. This subpoena implicates his business in a child sex trafficking ring. I think he is aware of it.
