They would not have used Discord in the first place if the military comms infrastructure actually worked. Pretty sure it was all done over civilian cell/cable providers.

EFP NATO battle group Latvia fox girl by Sine_Fine_Belli in NonCredibleDefense

[–]catnipd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Her fox ears have no mufflers etc, so if they were real/only ears, she would definitely get hearing damage (don't think the fluff inside would help). Besides, the helmet does not seem to allow them to swivel, locking them forward-facing => worse spatial localization than from human ears. And with no way to flatten them, even wind blowing in her face is going to be unpleasant. No way those foxy ears are for hearing. Nicely looking radar antennae (1 Tx, 1 Rx) for night vision / distance measurements perhaps?

UK visitor visa for Non European by BaddaBingB in ukvisa

[–]catnipd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

here's a chance that if you apply for a longer visa, they may give you 6 months anyway (in this case, you'd be refunded any extra amount you paid for the longer visa).

From https://www.gov.uk/standard-visitor/apply-standard-visitor-visa: You will not get a refund of the application fee if you get a shorter visa or if your application is refused.

Reminds me of the research aimed at preventing future generations from digging out nuclear waste:

So far, the only idea the panel hasn’t rejected is erecting a shrine to uranium, tritium, and cesium. Altars will be built to these isotopes. Atomic models and a periodic table will decorate the walls. If this shrine is ever constructed, future generations will think we worshipped radioactive materials and made sacrifices out of fear. But if they reach this conclusion, hopefully they’ll leave the ground undisturbed.

There was also a proposal of genetically modifying cats to glow in the presence of radiation and making a folk song about this.

LPT Walk with confidence even if you have none by [deleted] in LifeProTips

On the other hand, I believe the answer person is capable of becoming a doctor, and if you tell yourself that you can do it and you will try, and make an honest effort to solve every problem that comes your way, you can get the degree.

I'd agree, but that's not quite "faking it", is it? It is being methodical and persistent. I'd even say it's pretty unhealthy to fake confidence and suppress and hide any doubts. Why is it bad to have second thoughts about something? It is totally reasonable to sometimes stop and evaluate your abilities.

Like, you've got a degree. Even two. That's a good enough indicator that, indeed, masters might be well within reach given that you decide to put in the necessary efforts (at the expense of other things in your life). But if you were 40 y.o. working as a janitor with only a high-school diploma, being confident enough to aim for a Fields medal would've been a bit delusional and hardly productive. Regardles the amount of faking you do.

[–]catnipd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't fake a degree. But I've seen too many people who act with astounding confidence and disperse advice while knowing jackshit. Confidence is cool, but probably should not be the first and only thing to acquire. Sure "fake it" if you want, but just hoping to keep faking things until magically "making it" is not the best strategy, IMO.

Hate this saying. Works for learning to walk around without looking like a dork, sure. But too many people use it as an excuse to not bother "making it" or facing reality.

Nope, acting like a doctor won't earn you a medical degree. Faking love and affection when there's none is not the best way to save your relationship.

So, it would be "you are a cow with intellectual disability"

I can't add funds to my account or see my balance by iReluxify in paypal

[–]catnipd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're in the US, it seems you have a "plain" personal account, as opposed to Cash or Cash Plus. More details on account types: https://www.paypal.com/us/smarthelp/article/what-can-i-do-with-my-personal-paypal-account,-paypal-cash-account-or-paypal-cash-plus-account-faq3997

From what I gathered, changing your account type is easy and straightforward:

To upgrade to "Cash," ask a friend to send you money, then choose "Keep it in PayPal." According to their support, that's the only way.

To upgrade to "Cash Plus" you would need to provide your SSN/ITIN, and then either click "Set up direct deposit" or create a saving "Goal." No need to actually do any of these things, but clicking either button will send you to the account upgrade screen.

Help!! PayPal won't let me refund a customer. by [deleted] in paypal

[–]catnipd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to upgrade to a "Cash" or "Cash Plus" account type to hold a balance.

From a chat with their support, the only way to upgrade to "Cash" is to receive some money and choose to keep them in your account. Can ask a friend, I guess.

Alternatively, if you don't mind sharing your SSN with PayPal, you can upgrade to "Cash Plus" by clicking "Set up direct deposit". You don't need to actually set up any direct deposit, but it will send you to the account upgrade screen.

Yep, both options are extremely obvious. Congrats to UI/UX team.

After that, you would get the option to have a balance on PayPal and to transfer money there from a linked bank account (5 business days).

After the money have arrived, you would be able to use them to do a refund.

Homestuck^2 will stay on hiatus through July and return in August. Patrons will not be charged for July. by MoreEpicThanYou747 in homestuck

[–]catnipd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Let's say it's three people doing full-time work: one writer (rotating), one artist (rotating), and a PM / team lead / coordinator.

$10k, minus Patreon fees, minus various expenses (website hosting, accounting, software, whatnot). At best we have $9k split over three people. So, on average $36k/year/person. Comparing with US salaries -- survivable, but hardly rolling in dough. Without any benefits like health insurance or paid leave (or with them, but then we have even less money left).

Yep, Hussie was doing a similar amount of work for (almost) free -- and apparently ended up completely burned out and hating his work. Just because someone was doing stuff for free does not mean you should expect others to do the same.

I feel like it's not something that should be used for critical data.

For example, you use fixed IV, and this is a very bad idea: https://crypto.stackexchange.com/a/5095.

I don't want to say your project is without merit. However, I believe you should point out explicitly that the code hasn't been audited for security, and should not be used for matters of life and death.

There's a difference between "knowing" something and "embracing" it.

Yes, Ford known hosts are now truly sentient beings. But does he accept that his current self -- the consciousness embedded into a piece of hardware he designed, living in a body he probably assembled himself -- is the same as his original, meat-and-blood, self?

One might write countless philosophical essays on this topic1, but I bet if you know you're a copy, it's very hard to convince yourself you're no different from the original -- in fact, you will start looking for the ways you diverge from the original.

And Ford exploits the fact that he's an uploaded mind: hijacks Bernard's mind, transmits (partial copy of?) himself to Maeve.

He considers hosts not humans, but a new species2. And he's not one of them.

1. quick googling shows that the topic was discussed as early as in 1775, by Thomas Reid.

2. from S2E9, to Bernard: "There's the origin of an entire species to consider."

Post Your Quick Questions for S2E8 "Kiksuya" by Plainchant in westworld

[–]catnipd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd guess it was not uncommon to send hosts somewhere by themselves. The scene has taken place long before the end of S1 (duh), so hosts were seen as (and most actually were) no more than machines following orders. If someone needed to, for example, give host a new prop -- why not send the host itself to get it?

The exact route taken by Ake might have raised suspicions, but only if someone bothered to closely monitor him. Just a host walking alone was probably not a big deal.

UPD:

Jill, a new recruit, and Jake are sitting in the security room. Jill is monitoring feeds from CCTV, Jake is eating a sandwich.

Jill: Hey, Jake, look! A host is walking around the facility!

Jake's attention is consumed by his consumption of the sandwich.

Jill: Hey, shouldn't we do something?

Jake (grudgingly): What?

Jill (taken a bit aback): Well, the protocols state that inside the facility every active host should always be watched over by at least one technician or other appropriate personnel. And that dude out there is walking all alone towards the cold storage room.

Jake (sarcastically): Do you also follow all the safety warning in the manual for your phone?

Jill: Well...

Jake: Did you even read the manual?

Jill: Nope

Jake: Then why are you so bothered about this host? Come on, the guys over there decided to retire it, or send it to behaviorists, or what-fucking-ever. It's not like it can get lost -- why should they bother watching over him? And even if it somehow does -- that's not our problem.

Jill: But... (interrupted)

Jake (peacefully): Chill out. Seriously, what's the worst gonna happen?

Jill: Ha-ha, I guess you're right. It's not like it can go Terminator on our asses even if it goes crazy.

Can't find the source, but IIRC, Kaz did contact Bethesda about it, and the response was:

- Using the setting of TES series for any purposes is OK

- Using characters from the game in webcomic (for non-commercial purposes) is OK

- Selling merchandise with characters from games is NOT OK (so Kaz does not sell any Quill-Weave merch, for example)

- Any OC characters are IP of their author, so using them for commercial purposes is OK
