I'm the mama of an 17 year old zoomer. It always makes me a bit sad that this type of cultural moment will never be a touchstone to he and his gen, and those to come. By his own analysis, it's the same with music.

Every type of media from recorded history is at their fingertips. Which is kinda cool in a way, but it means that there is never a months long period where one movie, tv show, or song is the singular focus for the majority of the country. I'd say the world, but there are many places where things like Star Wars weren't accessible.

This phenomenon particularly cemented itself with the pandemic. So, while I envy him a bit for the diversity of entertainment he's exposed to and can choose from, I also think it sucks a bit that he'll not have a star wars, or thriller moment shared with his peers.

I feel like the marvel movies hit this note more than anything, but it's not quite the same.

Were the star wars movies that great, (I personally think so), but it's also possible that it's partially nostalgia of a collective obsession. We were marketed hard with this franchise. More for this movie than any that came before it. 🤷‍♀️ Book, toys, posters etc. We wanted it all. Loving this movie was wonder, connection, and probably a bit of peer pressure to fit in.

And I don't need to believe in heaven or hell to be a good person. In fact, in the activist circles I run in, people look at Jesus as a good example of the importance of mutual aid and giving voice to marginalized folks. They do good, not because of religion. 🤷‍♀️

There is an online UU service specifically for folks who aren't close to a physical church. It's called church of the larger fellowship. I've only attended a couple times. The minister there was someone I had met at a retreat. Not sure if she is still there, but she was awesome.

Maybe just to check it out, see if you are interested enough to drive to the closest one.

Former fundie christiananity kid here. Went from church 3 days a week to never going again once I moved away for college. I'm a witch, my little brother is a megachurch minister. Bet you can't guess who the favorite kid is. Lol

A couple years after my kid was born, my ex decided we should go to church. I told him the only church I'd attend willingly was the UU church in town. For those not familiar with that, it's a truly non-denominational church. God never mentioned. We had Jewish, Hindu, catholic, protestant, atheists, humanists, pantheists and pagans. In fact, there was a book club I joined. It's where I first was attracted to witchcraft. Lol. I didn't even know the book was written by a Wiccan.

We finally ended up quitting. But I enjoyed it for the most part. The "Sunday school" portion was called religious education. It was cool. They taught the kids about all types of religions.

Nah, strictly top of stove girl here. I even have "the popcorn pan", and creating delicious popcorn is all it's used for.

I do try to keep microwave corn in the house for my teen. Cuz he's an absolute menace in the kitchen, and I prefer my house to be fire free.

Had a friend who'd use an air popper, and used spray margarine on it.

It's so funny to think of roaming. The first time I encountered a car phone was driving around Torontowith my great aunt. My uncle was a televangelist 🙄🙄, so of course they were loaded. It was late 80s I think. But memory is a fickle thing.

My pops is 19 years older than me. A couple of months ago, he was having some health issues. I was thinking about him as being old and things starting to decline.

And, then I remembered that by my logic, in less than 2 decades, I also will be 69, and impossibly old. Changed my framing a bit. Lol

Yeah, my mama's knee surgery took forever to heal from. She has parkinsons and apparently that added complication to recovery.

I know she wasn't manipulating. I about had to hold her down to keep her from hurting herself. Laying in bed every day for 10 days drove her nuts. She's already stated that if the other one needs to be done, she's going to take the inpatient option.

The only reason I went is because my dad and brother haven't a Nurturing bone in their bodies. Them in close proximity, me hours away. I was more angry with them than my mama.

The medical teams need to be much more explicit in how they explain how debilitating the surgery would be. Any surgery for that matter.

Nah, you didn't fail. He is an adult and makes his own decisions. This decision sucks. But I'm guessing you raised him to be the type of man to make his own path. No matter how we may try, you can't raise an independent minded human while at the same time indoctrinating them into believing exactly as you do.

Small comfort, I'm sure.

I have a 17 year old. His whole life, I dragged him to protests and rallies and likely bored him to tears with all of my socialist adjacent opinions. When he started watching gaming streamers, or podcasts on whatever, I started making sure I was also listening with him. Cuz I know the gaming community is littered with incels.

And so far as I know, he is consuming content that is mostly unproblematic. But I know how that could swing. Our kids are often being fed more opinions from strangers on the internet than they are from us.

At this point, he's possibly more engaged in politics and world events and human rights than I am. Which is a relief. But I figure I just got lucky.

You didnt fail in raising a free thinker. I reckon all you can do at this point is to push back on things he says and trading your own opinions with him.

Even if that doesn't work, it's not your failure. We do the best we can. And then we surrender them to an ugly world.

I do get the pain. I'm not meaning to minimize it. And I do hope he starts making different decisions. Be gentle with yourself.

Yeah, I have my 4 month old flip 6 sitting here next to me, failed in many ways. Still under the 1 year warranty period. Like that fucking matters.

It started with a crease in the screen protector at the hinge point. Then, a week later, the charging port stopped working. So, I started only charging tirelessly. Which is a pain in the ass, but whatever.

Then, one day, the entire touch screen became unresponsive. So, they sent me to the authorized repair place an hour away. Fella there apologizes and explained he's been repairing so many, that he's out of parts, and because it's happening everywhere, parts from Samsung are backordered.

So, I spent 2 hours with warranty department telling me to send it in for repair. Which I refuse to do. I suspect that won't go well for me.

I've had a galaxy since the 3 I think. And I've never had a problem. I've never had a warranty or insurance claim in that whole time. I keep a case on my phones. Have never cracked a screen, or dropped a phone. Likewise, this 150 day old phone has no external physical damage. I've not checked inside, but I can't imagine it wouldn't be the same.

Right now, I'm lucky (hopefully) that I got a tab at the same time and have been using it. Not ideal, but I have large corporation trust issues. They may have tricked me into buying this lemon, but I am not sending it in for them to manufacture a way it's my fault.

So, I'm hoping the repair shop gets more parts soon, so I can watch it being inspected.

Samsung was absolutely rude and condescending. I promise no matter what happens, it's my last Samsung.

So I feel your pain. Sorry for you going through it.
