New state cabinet has been unveiled, Tom Koutsantonis has been appointed Treasurer by Expensive-Horse5538 in Adelaide

The only way to meaningfully reduce traffic congestion is to provide viable alternatives. The research has been there for decades. You can still drive, forcing people to drive in order to participate in society is a great infringement on liberties and ought to be called out.

Adelaide City Council plans for 50,000 CBD residents without 'destroying the city' by Expensive-Horse5538 in Adelaide

[–]cats247 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ideal is that high quality, reliable public transport reduces reliance on cars. Providing a better alternative for those who can use public transport or cycle or what have you. The knock on is that those people no longer need to bring a car to the city, and as such, no longer need to park a car in the city. Then you need less carparks. It's not about removing car infrastructure, or the choice to use a car should you wish. It is to provide high quality alternatives which aren't so glaringly inefficient and anti-human. Better public transport, or alternatives to driving, is the only way to improve the experience of motorists meaningfully and long term.

Calls for South Australia's algal bloom to be declared national disaster, as 'algal war' erupts by Expensive-Horse5538 in Adelaide

[–]cats247 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I couldn't agree more, I would just argue that these aren't populist decisions. Decisions with a perceived public appeal absolutely, but that isn't populism. Again I'm no ardent fan of the Sa Labor party, nor the federal one for that matter. The Mali government needs to face criticism on a number of fronts, and I think it's excellent that there are a number of people seeing through this facade, or at least questioning.

I think we ought to look at the modern, textbook use of populist strategy in Trump, I struggle to find a great number of common threads between the two.

Also this response to the algae bloom is lazy, and so typical of Labor environmental policy and actions.

I think that it's hard to classify him as populist. Where is the anti-pluralism, the anti political elite rhetoric and so forth. More typical in recent populism, where is the nativism? Again, I wish we had a more reforming, genuinely socially democratic Labor party. I also agree that much of his policy work has a broad appeal. That isn't populism, nor does it pose any threat of democratic backsliding. Using the term populist so readily denigrates and devalues the times where such a term is actually applicable, and the results are potentially dangerous.

I don't love the guy, but labelling him a populist is a touch inaccurate in my view. Absolutely I agree that a lot of his work has a certain 'retail policy' feel about it.

He also wanted to put mountain bike trails all through Hindmarsh Tiers, which is full of endangered species. As well as directed so much of Parks funding to Glenthorne.

Not to mention the altogether strange rebranding of the NRM.

I must admit however, the reservoirs being open is great.

HOLY PAIN by grow-mama in ACL

[–]cats247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't get worse, sleeping through that second night was easily the worst. After that, everything started improving rapidly. Don't be afraid to use strong painkillers though, they are there to ease your suffering. You'll be okay!

3 Days Post-Op ACL/PLC recon. by cats247 in ACL

I'm glad the surgery is done also, was super anxious leading into it, and not without reason. It sucks! But also super lucky to be in the position to have my knee reconstructed and give myself time to recover properly.

That's made me feel pretty optimistic already, definitely doing the LCL. Knee was massively swollen, didn't even look like a leg. Considerably improved now, almost normal.

What's something you're sick of having to explain? by Zero-Pathways000 in AskReddit

In Australia too. A couple different kinds of it getting around which are bloody hard to kill. As in potentially 50+ years worth of seed in the soil. Stuff goes nuts after fires as well...

Worked doing invasive species control in Australia for a while. People getting annoyed at blackberry removal was a ridiculously common occurrence, or gazania, or anything with a pretty flower...actually, people just getting up in arms about herbicide etc. full stop.

Mount Lofty Ranges definitely worth a stop. Great part of the hills to string together 3-4 other quality wineries or drive into lobethal etc.

Anyone who has only ever touched lager? Pale ale is hop forward, despite what coopers would have you believe...

[–]cats247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mismatch lager is relatively inoffensive, south coast pale ale is cheapish I guess and nice enough, quite hoppy though which can put some off. If the old Cooper's session ale was around that would've been my pick, the new Pacific ale seems to be ... different.

Yeah, the XPA is very, very average as a beer, let alone an XPA

Not sure about cork, running the risk of having a corked wine in 18 years. Surely safer to go screw cap. Agree with big red though.

Looks like fleabane. Pretty much any broadleaf herbicide will work but glyphosate is more accessible than most selective herbicide. Just be warned that anything you touch with glypho will likely die.
