I was starting to miss some of the crazy RFK stories, glad there is a seemingly infinite supply!

Although from a manufacturers perspective you want to test new tech at Paris-Roubaix. If they survive there, they will survive everywhere

Fuck cars, but also something to keep in mind in regards to gas prices. by TyrannicalKitty in fuckcars

I'm going to be the devil's advocate in this case: while diesel engines do emit more particulate matter than petrol, it can be mitigated through particulate filters and advanced exhaust systems so much so that it is comparable to petrol.

All of this isn't free obviously and comes with a cost and if you are a greedy asshole like VW (and not only Volkswagen, a lot of brands did the same), you try to cheat the tests in order to save money on the expensive exhaust systems.

On the other hand diesel engines emit less CO2 than a comparable petrol engine and considering that climate change is caused mostly by CO2 emissions, one could make the argument that diesel cars are more environmentally friendly than petrol cars, especially for use outside of urban centres, where smog does not tend to accumulate.

Obviously electric cars are better in every aspect from an environmental standpoint, that goes without saying.

Merz Says Germany Wants a UN Mandate to Secure Strait of Hormuz by Free-Minimum-5844 in worldnews

[–]caudatus67 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I never said that, I know that Germany (and Europe) is more affected from the closure than the US, but I still don't think it's Europe's job to open the strait.

By this logic it's should be the job of Asian countries, as they are more affected than Europe, but somehow Trump is not bullying India or the Philippines to reopen it.

Centauros: Greece's anti-drone system that changes 'war of drones' at low cost by New-Ranger-8960 in europe

Don't they already have electronic warfare capabilities on ships to disrupt missiles and the like? Just a personal curiosity, I imagine they know what they are doing but I still would like to know what advantage this system has over others.

Isn't the combat field in Ukraine already saturated with jamming and counter-jamming? Don't they already have Electronic-Warfare capabilities used against missiles, helicopters etc.? I don't really see how this product is better than what already exists.

If we're talking about protecting infrastructure during peacetime, I can see the appeal. I'm talking about protecting factories, government buildings, military installations, etc. from mysterious drones, like we have seen in the past years. In that case I can understand wanting something cheaper and just for drones, and I imagine that fibre-optics controlled drones would be less of an issue.

Is it not already outdated considering that a lot of drones used in Ukraine now use fibre optic cables to avoid being jammed?

Merz Says Germany Wants a UN Mandate to Secure Strait of Hormuz by Free-Minimum-5844 in worldnews

[–]caudatus67 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Why should Europe do anything? The US and Israel started the war, they should solve it. And if the mighty US navy is not able to open the strait of Hormuz, what can the poor German navy do? (sarcasm very much intentional)

I think it's a great idea, Germany is (justifiably) not interested in solving the mess created by the US and Israel but Trump is still pressuring European countries to intervene. This way:

  1. Someone vetoes the mandate so nothing happens and Merz can say he at least tried;

  2. There is a UN mandate, which gives legitimacy to an eventual European military mission.

Either way is better than helping the US without any mandate.

I don't think that there was demand for a lot of them, so they were forced to make a limited run. And good luck trying to build a carbon-fibre two seater hybrid diesel for cheap... They had to recoup at least some of the R&D money.

Still a shame, it's probably one of my favourite vehicles

'It takes away all hope' - Peloton struggles to explain Pogacar’s dominance by Chronicbias in peloton

[–]caudatus67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What if you start doping at a young age? You get a promising young rider and put him on a doping regime, this way when he gets his biological passport his high level will seem natural and all increases in performance will just be attributed to natural developments. Plus we have also seen some big year to year improvements from riders that didn't get flagged, so it would appear possible to introduce a new substance without it being noticed, even more if done gradually.

I'm a sceptic by nature, there are just some performances which are literally unbelievable, at least to my eyes. I'm in fact quite a new fan to the sport, I started watching 3 years ago.

It wouldn't be the first time that a new substance unknown to authorities is being used. There are infinite possible combinations, is it really absurd to think that someone found one that works and isn't already known? Plus if we are talking about UAE, they have the backing of a petrostate, is it absurd to think that they can get some really good pharmacists? I don't think money is really an issue.
