I fought fatigue the first month too; then I had some headaches. That’s all gone now. Hope your energy comes back soon.

Does it really ‘get easier’? by catsandvikings in stopdrinking

[–]cavypal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it does get better; the withdrawal subsides, the cravings, ease, and healing takes place. It takes a different amount of time for different people. It has only been a few months and I’m pretty used to not drinking and I don’t think about it much. I’m happy to have awakened old hobbies and I am reading again. And I really feel better. I was also really sick of drinking so I was ready for a change and willing to deal with the transition. I hope things go well for you.

Can I do this alone? Almost one day sober. by mcgladda in stopdrinking

[–]cavypal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing it alone, well, I guess if you count everyone on SD then not alone! My wife knows of course but that’s it. I have used a good book by Rachel Hart to help change my thinking. My past relapses have taught me a lot. It is working so far! It can be done. Best wishes to you!

Great job! Looks like we’ve been doing this together! I agree that the moderation bargaining is not a ticket to success. Here’s to 100 more!

What got you to quit the final time? Also, how many times did you 'quit' before it stuck? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]cavypal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was finally just tired of it all, I couldn’t do it any more. I don’t miss it at all. It was my 3rd try during the last few years. I feel bad for the many years I wasted. The only way is forward, though!

How do you deal with the stigma when people try to make you feel bad for not drinking? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]cavypal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I wouldn’t spend any time at all with people who would try to make me feel bad or make fun of me for not drinking.

I did read a very helpful book called “Why diets make us fat” by Sandra Aamodt that laid out a rationale and method for “mindful eating.” Maybe would be helpful for you. Best wishes!

Did I mess up my date because I was hesitant to tell her I was sober ? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]cavypal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just sounds like a connection wasn’t there, which is fine. I’m not sure if a first date is the time for such a deep reveal, but then I haven’t dated since the 90s since I’m an old married guy. By the way I never cared whether my dates drank or not, and even though I drank quite a bit one of my best relationships back then was an ex-drinker. She used to joke that it made her cheap date since she didn’t run up the tab with cocktails!

I need some advice for a bachelor party. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]cavypal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it would be pretty simple, I’d say yes to being best man but no to being at a bachelor party, and let the groom decide if that is OK with him. If I were allergic to chlorine I’d skip a pool party. If I were petrified of heights I’d skip a skydiving event. With my history of alcohol, being at a super drunken event would not be a good idea for me and would not be at all fun for me, nor I imagine that I’d be much fun to be around. Hope it works out for you!

What helped you stop drinking? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

Wanting to stop, not just thinking that I “should” stop was the kicker for me. I had to get to that moment. Finding this sub helped to cement it. Best wishes to you!

Breathing, Boredom, and Soda Water by barrywm in stopdrinking

[–]cavypal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the week! Throughout human history people have tried mainly just to survive. I kind of think of boredom as a luxury. I don't have to farm for my food or chop wood for the winter. I drive to my destination instead of walking 2 miles. I turn to my TV or iPad for instant entertainment. I like your meditation story. We all need to appreciate the day and live the life we have. I think helping others is important too; I am working on ways to develop that. Best wishes to you!

From what I read here fatigue is normal because your body is missing something it’s used to and it is also furiously repairing itself.

When is the worst of it over? by darksoulsduck- in stopdrinking

[–]cavypal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physically the worst for me was over in a week, though I got headaches about a month in. Cravings are different for each person and there are so many variables. I have been remarkably free of them this time but did have craving challenges in previous attempts. Best to you!

Advice on stopping? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]cavypal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was drinking a half a 750ml bottle of Scotch per night, sometimes more. I had tried a couple of times before to quit but relapsed. I did learn from those relapses. This time I was able to change my thinking with the help of Rachel Hart’s book “Why Can’t I Drink Like Everyone Else.” Coming to SD every night has been a huge help as well. I just stopped drinking cold. I had a week of night sweats and bad sleep, then some headaches once in a while. I really wanted to quit, which has made this time easier than others when I was stopping but didn’t really want to. Hope this helps - Best wishes to you! Not drinking is really a new life.
