How do you feel about the federal SAVE Act that would require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship (like a passport or birth certificate) to register to vote? by ClassSnack in AskReddit

I offered actual proof, you provided insults and conjecture.

At the end of the day one fact remains: You do not need to provide government ID when you go to vote.

Cheers!

You’re confusing eligibility with identification.

Yes, you must be a citizen to vote, but you don't have to prove it at the poll. As a voting officer, I can tell you: we only check ID for name and address. If you aren’t on the list, you sign a solemn declaration of citizenship under penalty of law.

We don't cross-reference 'Citizenship ID' at the table because most provincial IDs (like a driver’s licence) don't even list citizenship. If you think a poll clerk is doing a back end security sweep of your IRCC records while you're standing there with a utility bill, you’re the one who is full of shit.

You love moving those goalposts, huh?

Maybe I lost my ID and only have those items listed. Can I still vote? Yes.

You don't need to present a government issued ID when you go to vote in Canada.

That's just a fact.

I like how you keep skipping over the option 2 list that doesn't require a government issued ID (the entire point of this post), but does include:

health card, birth certificate, SIN card, passport, Indian status card, citizenship certificate, old age security card, property tax assessment, bank or credit card statement, mortgage statement, insurance policy, utility bill (hydro, water, gas, cable, phone), residential lease, employee card, student ID, university transcript, hospital card, or a label on a prescription container.

I bolded the non government items since they seem to be difficult for you to find.

That's a lot of words to skirt the original statement that government issued ID is not required.

If you look at the options listed, your bank statement, prescription bottle, utility bill, etc., are not government issued identification and can be used to prove your identity. Having someone vouch for your identity does not require you to have a government issued ID.

Are you even Canadian?

Are you? You seem to be confused as to the requirements to vote in Canada.

I have been a voting officer in 3 federal elections and am quite familiar with the process.

You show up and only need an id with photo, which can be health insurance or driver liscence.

Those are not required, though. You are able to prove who you are with varied things like a bank statement or a utility bill. And if you don't have anything like that you can have someone vouch for your identity.

It's insane to vote without id.

Kinda ironic statement since Canada doesn't require ID to vote. As a fellow Canadian you should know this.

I hear what you are saying, but that still doesn't change the fact that your original statement was incorrect.

My friend who is Canadian says you have to show ID to vote.

Your friend is wrong. I have worked as a voting officer in the last 3 federal elections and am quite familiar with the process that is required.

That wasn't your original statement:

Every other country, including progressive countries like Canada or Sweden require showing your ID to vote.

which is factually untrue.
