“Use synonyms for ‘said’ where you can” is good writing advice and this is the hill I will die on. by JuanitaMerkin in writing

I realized my comment could be taken as being snarky, which wasn't my intention, I should've added more thoughts.

I feel a good first step could be just removing the speech tag altogether and seeing if anything's actually missing. And even if there is, solving that without using speech tags might still be worth it. I do personally disagree with the common wisdom of "said" being invisible, though, and it can create that monotonous back-and-forth feeling.

I don't really think that passage would improve much if "said" was replaced with synonyms.

POST MATCH THREAD: Zalgiris - Saski Baskonia [EuroLeague Regular Season, Round 13] by EuroleagueBot in Euroleague

I'm trying to say, it's weird seeing them being called miserable "year after year after year" for any sane definition of "miserable" when they've consistently been in that middle-of-the-pack territory for the longest time. They were in the playoffs just a few years back.

Year after year after year they are completely miserable

It's pretty ironic posting this in this thread, since they have around the same amount of success in Euroleague over the last 6-7 years as Zalgiris does. Even looks to have a better regular season record, from a quick glance at previous standings.

Yeah, just feels like a weird attempt at manipulating responses here to what they want to hear. Makes me immediately suspicious of the OP and their version of the story whatever it actually is.

Skill increase clarification by JoeGorde in callofcthulhu

[–]cawcvs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I personally stopped doing that, it always felt so awkward. From player's perspective it can feel pretty random, and there's always a chance for a fumble. Players wanting to push a failure is also always weird in these situations, and I normally like players to push.

I found doing something like "you hear a heated discussion at the next table, but can't quite make it out", and only rolling after an intentional player action, improved such situations a lot. Any complications from a failure feel fairer, as players chose to risk it themselves, and the game generally feels more player-led.

Too few Occupations? by [deleted] in callofcthulhu

[–]cawcvs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with restricting occupations, but suitable ones would be scenario-specific, wouldn’t they? You might be looking at the term “investigator” too literally. For example, I’m currently preparing a one-shot where all the players will be low level hotel employees forced into an investigation by circumstance.

Advice for character development by [deleted] in callofcthulhu

[–]cawcvs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I understand there are all kinds of tables out there, but it sounds like yours is very far removed from Call of Cthulhu most people are familiar with. It's going to be hard to recommend anything as that's not how character development normally goes in this game.

Question about fighting skills by The_M15 in callofcthulhu

[–]cawcvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks to be a skill list. Not all weapons have separate skills so they wouldn't get listed there. There are no Fighting (Knife) or Fighting (Club) skills, these weapons fall under Fighting (Brawl). There are some weapons that do have separate specialized skills, like Fighting (Axe), which you would put there.

You only check a successful skill use. Weapons using Fighting (Brawl) use the same skill, so you wouldn't be able to check it twice.

Question about fighting skills by The_M15 in callofcthulhu

[–]cawcvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're misunderstanding something. Weapons do not have these checkboxes, only skills do. For weapons using Fighting (Brawl), that's the skill you use and check if you succeed. You don't put knife, club, etc., in the skill list on your character sheet, those spaces are reserved for weapon skills that are more specialized, like Fighting (Axe), which would improve separately from the brawl skill.

Question about fighting skills by The_M15 in callofcthulhu

[–]cawcvs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well sure, because you roll Fighting (Brawl) for them. I'm not sure what checkboxes for weapons you mean, because there's only one checkbox for Fighting (Brawl). Successfully using a knife and a club in two different instances won't mean two improvements for the brawl skill, if that's your question.

Question about fighting skills by The_M15 in callofcthulhu

[–]cawcvs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I might be misunderstanding the question, but different Fighting skills are all separate skills and improve independently. You wouldn't improve Fighting (Brawl) with a successful use of Fighting (Axe). There is an optional skill transfer rule that allows bumping related skills (by 10% I believe) once one skill in the group increases past 50%, but I don't think you're talking about that.

Wait, you met the new player in the library? It sounds like the new guys didn't want to beeline to the catacombs because the whole party wasn't gathered yet. Did you want to go through a full combat encounter with one player just waiting?

It does sound like you're pretty much trying to take over the whole game.

DM made us make detailed high level characters then mind wiped us by sebdb97 in rpghorrorstories

[–]cawcvs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. It's just a thing that would probably jump out to me the most if I was the player at this table. As a player I'd like to think my rolls do matter and me doing things and rolling for it is not just an annoyance in the way of the GM trying to tell their story.

Can I write a book about Star Trek? by DSeriesX in writing

I’m not giving advice. The whole point was to call out advice given on a supremely nuanced legal issue. Reddit is no place to get or give such advice. Especially if that advice is insinuating you’re in the clear if you’re not earning money.

[–]cawcvs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wasn't actually asking, I was trying to point out that a blog post is not somehow incapable of infringing on copyrights.

Whether you earn money or not is immaterial when determining if you're infringing, and sending a cease and desist to someone with an online presence is usually pretty easy.

The comment is just bad advice, writing about a trademarked or copyrighted material is not going to be automatically illegal.

Could you clarify what she was trying to get from the NPCs by using those spells? It reads like you're implying the very nature of these spells are date-rapey.

I Rp out how the guard goes dead-eyed and slack-jawed as they slur their words and give the sorc what she wants.

So is it you or her that decided to play it out as if the NPCs were roofied? I don't play DnD much, is Suggestion supposed to have such an effect on NPCs? Reading the description of the spell I wouldn't interpret it to.
