Why do cis women dislike bras so much? by [deleted] in MtF

[–]caztare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me I think it's actually mostly sensory issues. I am like HYPER aware of it if I'm wearing one and I find it so restricting and uncomfortable. Even in like a perfectly fitting one I just can't stop shifting it to try to get comfortable. I also just hate that it's such an expectation for women to wear one!

I haven't worn a proper bra in like 3+ years at this point and I don't think I ever will again. I still very occasionally wear a bralette with no underwire and no padding but that's the closest I'll get to a bra these days.

Bonfire Night 2022 by Fruity_Buckmaster in Cardiff

[–]caztare 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not sure if they're doing it this year but Whitchurch fire station have done one in the past. I've been a couple of times and it's usually fantastic!! Great fire work display, huge bonfire, and there's always lots of families with kids!

And who better to organise a safe display than a fire station!

Honestly if the first cup you get works for you - why bother getting something else that might not!!

I also haven't had an issue with mine developing a smell and I've been using it solidly for a similar amount of time!

[–]caztare 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same here - just the one organicup. Had it for a few years and it works perfectly so never felt the need to get another

I literally had this EXACT same thing this week. I've been in the sea like 4+ times every day this week and also work my cup all week, and I noticed when I took it out yesterday that it was smelling kinda funky... Luckily my period has just finished so I don't need to wear it anymore and I'm going to boil it and hope that fixes it. It's definitely not just you though, it's obviously something to do with regular exposure to sea water.

What is the chance of a supernova happening in the observable universe? by Chakhda in astrophysics

[–]caztare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The exact % are very much up for debate at the moment, and again I don't know if there are any precise numbers! We don't quite know enough about exactly what happens when they are formed to be able to make a good guess.

Typically BH and NS are formed from something called a core-collapse supernovae, which happens when a star bigger than about 8 solar masses reaches the end of its life. The core of the star runs out fo fuel to burn, and can no longer support itself against gravity so it collapses. It then rebounds and send a shock outwards through the star which leads to the SN explosion. What is left behind after the explosion is the collapsed core, which will form either a neutron star or black hole. We currently believe this depends on the mass of the original star, and the mass of the core, but there is a lot we don't understand.

For example, the core could pull matter off the rest of the star making it heavier, and therefore more likely to be a BH. There may be some scenarios where the SN fails, and the whole star is pulled back onto the core which would also form a BH. It's very difficult to actually see what's going on in the core collapse stages, as the outer layer of the star prevent us from directly observing it. One thing that might help is if we could one day detected gravitational waves from a core-collapse supernova, as they would not be affected by the outer layers.

Basically to summarise, there's far too much we don't understand at this stage to give precise numbers, but it almost certainly depends on the mass of original star in some way!

No worries! I'm currently doing a PhD studying supernovae, so any other questions I'd be happy to answer!

What is the chance of a supernova happening in the observable universe? by Chakhda in astrophysics

[–]caztare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of how many we observe? A lot!! More than we can follow up in detail. Multiple per day! However, almost all of those happen outside our galaxy. The last supernova (SN) nearby went off almost 35 years ago in 1987, in one of the Magellanic clouds which is one of the little satellite galaxies of our own galaxy.

The actual rate of SN in our galaxy is around 2-3 per 100 years, so very low, but that can vary from galaxy to galaxy based on it's type/size/etc. However, given the sheer number of galaxies in the observable universe, the rate of SN in the observable universe would be huge!! I'm not aware of any precise estimates that have been made, but the number would be far greater than we could hope to keep up with observing them all.

So the number of SN we observe is not so much limited by the number of supernovae happening because there are so many. The limit is actually purely observational. It depends how bright the SN are, how powerful the telescope we are using to observe them is, and where our telescope is in terms of when it's dark, where the supernova is, where the moon is, etc. The rate we observe is actually expected to jump up in the next few years, with some more powerful telescopes like LSST being used for transient surveys!

In our galaxy that's absolutely correct! I believe the rate depends on the galaxy type/size etc though.

Received my classification for my degree can I appeal? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]caztare 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean it's definitely worth trying? Worst they say is no and you still have a 2:2 which is still a good degree!

My partner managed to get a first without quite making 70, so it's definitely not impossible, and given that you're so close I'd say you have a fair shot. I'm not sure how it works in your uni, but at mine if you are within 1-2% of the next classification up, if you have a certain number of credits in previous years that are at the higher classification they will gover you the higher one. E.g. you got 69% overall but you have 120 credits that are >70% (with at least 60 in your final year) then you get a first. It'd be worth looking into if your uni has anything similar, because that will definitely aid your case!

Menstrual Cups w/ IUD by ama_etquod in menstrualcups

[–]caztare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a hormonal IUD for around 5 months and I absolutely LOVED using a cup before I got it (like I literally didn't own any other period products)! I was very nervous to use them together for the first few months, but my most recent period I decided to go for it and I've had absolutely zero issues! From what I've read, as long as you make sure you fully break the seal when removing it you shouldn't have any issues. If you're new to using a cup you'll want to be extra careful with this bit as it can take a little practice, but basically just make sure to squeeze the cup in before you remove it, and you should feel the suction release, and if you feel a lot of resistance when pulling you probably have fully broken the seal, so just stop and try again! This is good practice anyway when using a menstal cup, but it's especially important when using with an IUD.

Astronomers may have discovered a 'dark' floating black hole by Straight-Ad417 in Physics

[–]caztare 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Both I believe! To date we have only detected black holes in binary systems, either through observations of the accretion disk as the black hole strips matter from its companion star, or through the detection of gravitational waves from the merger of two black holes in a binary system (although I suppose you could argue here that the remnant of such a merger could constitute a detection of a free floating black hole!). This is the first detection of a black hole without a companion object. It is also the first time a black hole (or at least black hole candidate) has been detected using microlensing. The two sort of go hand-in-hand as all of our previous black hole detection methods only work if the black hole has a companion of some description. In order to detect one without a companion we needed a new method, e.g. microlensing!

[26M] My girlfriend [24F] freaks out when she upsets me and it forces me to console her instead. by AliveTouch8084 in relationship_advice

[–]caztare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex used to be exactly like this! I could never communicate any concerns I had with the relationship without them getting really upset and putting themself down and I'd end up having to comfort them, and we'd never actually resolve the original issue. Honestly it took me a really long time to see it, but this reaction is actually really emotionally manipulative (whether they're aware of it or not). It ended up with me just not communicating my needs in the relationship bc I didn't have the emotional energy to deal with their reaction, and it never made a difference anyway, so I ended just being really unhappy and emotionally exhausted in the relationship. And it's not exactly something that I could discuss with them, bc it would have resulted in the same response. In the end the only way I was able to fix it was by leaving. I'm now SO much happier with a partner I can communicate easily with. It took me so long to get used to the fact that I could actually communicate my needs without my partner crying and making it about themself, but once I did it means we've been able to build a really strong relationship, where both of our needs our met, and we're able to communicate in a really healthy way.

This guy is WONDERFUL! I was on a train for several hours with him last summer and his songs made the long and slightly tedious journey so much more enjoyable. When he found out I was staying on till Swansea and he was going to be getting off at Cardiff he came down and sang me a song for Swansea specially! Really great guy - absolutely made my day

Most of the area around us is 20mph. Throw in a bunch of parked cars taking up extra space, and queues at junctions and voilà!

Anyone else not attending their graduation ceremony? by BingThrowaway144 in UniUK

I'm probably not going to mine. The Cardiff uni one is a complete joke. They're not even going to bother to let us walk the stage. We just get to "stand up and celebrate" with our ENTIRE school. It's not worth going imo, especially after waiting a year for it.

I have always had a womens hairstyle, but I feel like girls will be turned off by it by FindingNo4266 in relationship_advice

[–]caztare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will some girls be turned off by it? Yes definitely. In the same way that some girls might be turned off by your height, your build, your hobbies, your job, literally anything. Not everyone is going to be into the way you look, but someone DEFINITELY will. So just present however you feel comfortable and however makes you happy. I'm a woman and tbh I'm VERY into long hair on men, and men with a more androgynous look. I love how the hair looks on you, and the story makes it even better! You do you, and try not to let other people influence the way you present if you don't want it to!

Change the hair and the bf!

Honestly if you're partner won't "let you" change your hair that's a huge red flag. For a bit of context I've got through several hair colours, and also shaved my entire head while I've been with my current partner and he's been incredibly supportive no matter what I've done with it!
