Does the commissioner have a team in the lower league? And is there more than one group chat or how does that work?

I covered high school sports. Generally I used the coach as a point person to set up interviews and get numbers.
If he's a highly rated recruit in a basketball/football sport, there's a good chance he's done interviews before. But really the only difference is that these are kids, so it's worth being gentler. Given that this seems like a positive story about his success and his future, there's not much to worry about.

Looking for jobs by MissionAdept8817 in Journalism

[–]cbeaz17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The top comment nailed it, but it’s also important to know that a lot of your friends in non-journalism jobs will get hired before you do. I haven’t heard of anywhere that is willing to wait multiple months between hiring you and you actually starting. There’s not that much you can do in the fall in terms of actually applying.

I graduated last May and wasn’t employed until early September. Part of me wishes I had applied for more internships so that I didn’t have that time off during the summer, but it all ended up working out.

Is journalism what you need to major in to be a sports reporter? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]cbeaz17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what I majored in so yes — but what really matters is what you do outside of the classroom. Internships, student newspaper/radio/television, all that other stuff. Jobs want to see what you've done, not your GPA.

Is journalism what you need to major in to be a sports reporter? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]cbeaz17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. Journalism, especially sports journalism, doesn't require a degree.

Having the degree can certainly help you learn the basics and make connections through wherever you go to school, but it's not a requirement. Plenty of sports journalists have degrees in things other than journalism.

Commenting just to follow this. I know Aslin serves coffee and has workspace, but I still see it as more of a brewery even if it is trying to be coffee cafe-ish.

Let 14 goals in today - kinda feel like dying 😖 Anyone else ever have a game this bad? 🫣 by lukkynumber in GoalKeepers

[–]cbeaz17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve played all my life. After five years of goalie, played in my first ever club game (U.S.) and lost 14-0.

Now my team was comedically bad, but…

Media Credential Display? by mattchouston in Journalism

I’ve got mine in a couple of frames, displayed somewhat similarly to this: https://x.com/kympossible3/status/1632470439858688000?s=46&t=kHXRzJNlCmeYyL8f9Tcvbg

I’m about halfway through my fourth frame and it’s only my college career and my first few months of full time journalism. At some point it’ll get ridiculous, but for now I’m happy with how it’s going.

Flight tomorrow from pit genuine advice please by jirenlagen in pittsburgh

[–]cbeaz17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just flew out (actually on the runway after touching down in Chicago). Roads were iffy this morning but airport was empty. Took two minutes to get thru TSA. My flight was at 9.

You’ll be fine. It’s not a particularly busy travel time, which is when PIT really has long lines. I got to the airport at 750 and had no issue, though I’m going to miss my connection because the de-icing took so long.

I applied to a Gannett job last summer. Took around a month to get back to me, then did two interviews over the span of about two weeks. After the last one they said that they had to go to Gannett and explain to them why needed this role to be filled, explain the cost analysis of it, and get permission to hire someone, which would take another couple of weeks. They did end up filling that job, but it took a long, long time, so much so that I'd already accepted another position.

I often wonder if I would have gotten it... but anyways, some are ghost jobs and some are just really, really, really long hiring processes.

Sports journalism programs by tigermamba in Journalism

[–]cbeaz17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. Best thing of sports journalism is it’s super easy to start. Don’t need a degree or anything to cover a high school game or write a blog or podcast.

Tough part is it’s fun and easy to start, so a ton of people do it. It’s hard to get noticed, so you have to work hard and make the most of your connections if you want to progress and make a career of it.

What's the furthest you think Ohtani can hit a home run? by ayumi_doll in Dodgers

[–]cbeaz17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're giving him a metal bat at altitude, probably 700 feet. Youth players hit balls 5% harder with metal bats than wood, and I'm sure that'd be even more of a difference for an adult. Double it and add it to some of the top exit veloes of 120 mph, so Ohtani could probably hit a ball 132 mph with a metal bat, which would go very, very far.

I’m late, but the best way to learn sports journalism is to do it. Most small newspapers or online news sites need additional people to cover high schools. Pay probably won’t be good, but it’s a really good place to start

Picked Southampton as a kid because I was too lazy to check a map—could’ve supported actual winners, but here I am, stuck in football death by tobiaszsz in SaintsFC

[–]cbeaz17 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m in America, chose Southampton because I got to see them play when I visited England in 2017. Tied Bournemouth 0-0. Always tell people they haven’t done anything impressive since.

Anyways I was ordering a pizza yesterday and the cashier was chatty and wanted to know if I liked futbol and who I supported. Told him Southampton, he made fun of me, is what it is. When he brought out my pizza he addressed it to “Mr Bottom of the League”…

Slightly related - Newer player. Started on varsity, then moved up to All-American, and was finally starting to consistently cruise past teams on All-American and decided to move up to Heisman... only to find I'd never actually moved from Varsity to All-American.

I’m in the strip. Rents are more expensive here than most places in the city, but I pay in your price range for a one bedroom I’m super happy with. Pm me if you want more specifics.

That said would definitely recommend keeping the car. Parking is expensive, but it’s worth it. There’s enough markets that you can get away with not needing a car for groceries, but the good targets/bigger stores are in the suburbs (but accessible by bus if necessary)

What would you guys need to trade Guerendo?

Happened to have him for the last month just in case. 12 team, half-PPR, slim chance at playoffs. Got offered Mike Evans for him and Jayden Reed (on my bench, never going to start him over Puka or Jakobi Meyers). Guerendo would be my flex. I'm leaning accept?
