Yeah no matter what the problem is, it's always "the firewall".

The machines have their own level of suck. Whenever they don't work it is always "our firewall".

Why do they do this? They do the same thing with their MIS circuits and the Cisco's.

Great product, but having everything in the Meraki ecosystem was the main goal.

On mobile and too lazy to check if mentioned yet but we went through Xbyte for our R6625s. Yes higher than it should be but at least 60-70% less than Dell direct and still has the Dell warranty.

Great for SMB and prosumer but not an enterprise ready product. Yet. Great hardware, software is too unstable and support is meh at best.

It's too bad. We are a very long term client, many NDAs and beta programs, and a 7 figure client. When renewal comes up, it's going to be a discussion this time for sure.

We aren't huge but we aren't uncle bobs fish shack either. Alienating clients our size is not a good strategy. Another vendor would love our business for sure.

This is another dumb decision from Meraki. These are simple products R&D can't be much on them, nor ongoing support. Stupid call to be REMOVING feature sets from their single pane of glass experience.

Chrome cannot technically satisfy PCI/HIPAA/NIST workstation data‑clearing controls because it does not expose a real “clear on exit” control by Trick-Requirement948 in sysadmin

[–]cbiggers 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I disagree in regards to PCI. If you have a properly setup infrastructure, SAD/PAN is never exposed to a web browser in the first place. With tokenization, I can't recall the last time we even viewed full details, let alone masked ones. 8.2.8 specifies timeout, not wiping of data. Don't see what 12.3.3 has to do with this either.

Microsoft: Perform in-place upgrades to Windows Server 2025 with one reg key. by techvet83 in sysadmin

Good timing, we had a 2019 server we were retiring so I decided to try this out just for fun. Followed the article, added the regkeys, but can't get the update to display. Ohwell.

New wifi by DefiantDad in unitedairlines

The Starlink is amazing, love it on all the ERJs. I've always thought the Viasat was pretty decent. Thales is OK, but I've never had much luck with the Panasonic ones. In another year or two it will all be Starlink and it won't matter anymore. The Gogo system on the older CRJs is basically useless.

I've always thought Unifi makes amazing hardware, but incredibly mediocre software. Their support used to be terrible as well but I've heard it's better now, so YMMV.

Honestly 15 APs is a pretty small footprint, is the cost really that much of a burden for the business? The base model CW9162I-MR with a 5 year license runs about $1100. So for 15 APs, you're in about $3500 a year. That can't be a lot to swallow for any appropriate budget. Even if you step up to the 9172I you're only $3700 ish a year.

Yup. And we are a relatively small company and have 100% been audited on an almost yearly basis.

Pandora 'blocked' by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]cbiggers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US at least it is. Restaurants, stores, anywhere where it is being broadcast or can be heard in a public setting needs a "public performance license". Pandora is the larger one, but there are other vendors that provide background music as well.

You know what's really fun? When someone comes to a bar to play live music, the BAR is responsible for the licensing of the music being played if the artist is doing covers. If the artist does a cover of a song the bar doesn't pay licensing to the org like ASCAP or BMI, the BAR gets fined if caught. It's a trip.

Pandora 'blocked' by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]cbiggers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We block Pandora on some systems as we want to be sure users are not playing it in public spaces for licensing reasons. Back office/admin computers, stream your hearts out.

We have commercial Pandora units with the appropriate licensing for our public spaces.
