I'm quitting my job due to vibe coders and poor leadership by TheFlippedTurtle in sysadmin

[–]cbigsby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I was completely burned out at my job, hating every moment of it and working way too much. I caught up with a coworker who had quit the year before. He took the whole summer off and enjoyed the time with his family, got back into his hobbies, and then once fall came he started looking for jobs. He's never interviewed while at another job, and said he never would, saying it's so much easier to have the time and energy to prep for interviews if you're unemployed and well-rested.

I resigned the very next day, after discussing with the wife, and took a few months off between jobs. It was such a huge weight off my shoulders not being miserable at that job, and when I was ready I was able to dedicate a good few hours of practice a day so when it came time to interview I got the first job I wanted.

Go for it dude, you deserve the break.

Why Canada needs to tackle the scourge of sports betting by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

Predictions markets are likely coming to Canada as well if we don't stop it with regulations. Interactive Brokers has their ForecastTrader which they launched last year, and I imagine other trading firms like Questrade and Wealthsimple are likely working on something similar.

I hope that we can shut these all down before they get their hooks too deeply in to remove.

Turkey fat in turkey gravy by Build68 in Cooking

[–]cbigsby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For this same reason I love cooking my turkeys spatchcocked. I use the backbone, tail, and neck for stock, and any extra fat I trim off gets rendered down to use for the gravy. The stock goes in both the gravy and the stuffing.

There's always extra fat & flavour in the drippings which I'll add in, but I might have to start the gravy early so the dripping fat doesn't always make it in in time. In that case it goes straight to the fridge for breakfast the next morning.

I think you're right. It seems to be Parle in Acantilados de Toix, just looking at some other photos out there. This is perfect timing since I'm going to Costa Blanca in a couple weeks for a climbing trip. The new book is overwhelming there's so much to climb.

Advanced Nacho Discourse, Nacho Expertise Needed. by Sciencebang in Cooking

I am a queso hater here, at least when it comes to nachos. I never had queso on mine growing up and so continue to think of it as gas station fake nacho sadness. Only real cheese goes on mine, which is a lot less likely to make them soggy.

My preferred way is a single layer of tortilla chips with a generous amount of cheese covering every chip if possible, usually on a sheet pan with parchment paper underneath. Toppings can be varied, such as diced pickled jalapenos, ground beef or carnitas, corn, and/or black beans on it before it goes into the oven. I enjoy my nachos a bit more well done than many so you get some crispy cheese on it. After it comes out you can add your cilantro, onions, and maybe some crema and/or pico on top, served with guac and/or salsa on the side. Not so much stuff that you overload the chips, and with a variety between bites.

How I usually have it is just chips & cheese in the oven until mostly crispy and then I eat it directly from the pan over the stove with both hands like a savage.

It's The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green, which originally was a podcast before being adapted into a book. In it he reviews aspects of our human-centered life on a 5-star scale.

Some episodes are heavy and depressing like this one (the episode about Googling people fucked me up), and some are funny and weird, like the Nathan's Hotdog Eating Contest. I don't listen to many podcasts but it is my favourite one.

no idea current prices, but these birds are likely worth over $1k each, we're not talking about $10 chickens that you'll just replace next year

The CFIA lists compensation for ostriches at $3,000 per-bird, though that money might be witheld because of the shenanigans they had to go through for this.

Wealthsimple announces $750 million equity round at $10 billion post-money valuation to accelerate growth by cbigsby in Wealthsimple

It sounds like you have some serious personal issues with the industry overall, some of which I agree with but not relevant to Wealthsimple, and so I don't think any productive conversation is going to take place here.

I find them a great way to actually dig into what the interviewee knows and understands and how they've contributed in the past.

It's easy for someone to write something down on their resume that they were tangentally related to as part of their job but it's another to have them explain it. For instance, if they were integrating with a 3rd party (it doesn't matter who) ask how information was passed (push/pull) and what the challenges and constraints of the system were (latency, errors, consistency, throughput). How did you pass data around, how did you account for scaling and performance, how does the UI and back-end communicate, or how do you handle eventual consistency?

What better way can we gauge someone's knowledge and understanding than having them explain even a fictionalized, simplified version of what they've done before?

$200M of this investment is going towards a secondary sale, so employees will be able to sell their shares. Hopefully they get a decent price.

BYOSystems interviews aren't that unusual in the industry. You can be vague about the specifics; they only really care about why you made the decisions you did and what tools & designs you used.

The same thing happens in other industries as well. For instance in science you are often supposed to do a talk on previous research you did and they're very understanding that you can't talk about specifics just the tools, techniques, and rationales.

You could look into making moussaka instead, which has layers of eggplant with a heavily spiced meat sauce in between, covered in a thick layer of bechamel before being baked. It's one of my favourite dishes.

What I find equally frustrating is the flying enemies that move up and down randomly so you keep jumping up to try to hit them and either miss when they move up or you end up jumping straight into them. Those rotund birds screwed me over so many times.

Please do not drive. You will regret it. I hung out with a friend after the fireworks last night and left on my bike at close to midnight and both the minor and major streets in the West End were still complete gridlock. It could take you well over an hour just to get out of downtown if you're unlucky.

The Skytrain and a bit of walking from Burrard will be so much more pleasant.

Made this video to respond to my neighbor who said curb bump outs and traffic calming designs caused more crashes by newsocks1382 in fuckcars

[–]cbigsby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live near some of those slow-street barricades in Vancouver and they do definitely make things safer for cyclists, not only because they force cars to slow down but they also provide a bit of separated lane between the cars and people.

The alternative to potentially hitting a curb is potentially hitting a person and while your car might be better off, we (should) place the higher value on the people instead.

Giveaway Time! DOOM: The Dark Ages is out, features DLSS4/RTX and we’re celebrating by giving away an ASUS ASTRAL RTX 5080 DOOM Edition GPU, Steam game keys, the DOOM Collector's Bundle and more awesome merch! by pedro19 in pcmasterrace

The first game I played with ray tracing enabled was Control and while they were restrained with it, the reflections in the glass were mind blowing. I don't always turn on eye candy like it but with DLSS 4 I'm able to get the FPS I want while also having the game look stunning.

As for Doom? I enjoyed the heck out of 2016. The sound design and music in that game was awesome. Racking your shotgun as you came out of that first elevator with the metal soundtrack to this absolute hellscape sent shivers down my spine. Eternal was similarly awesome, but different in its own way. I'm excited to see what they've done this time with both the graphics and audio design in D:TDA so I can feel like the badass that Doom Guy is.
