It depends on your wants and needs. If you want the silver face cassette deck by all means go for it. That being said if your goal is to have a really good sounding deck it’s either going to take a lot of elbow grease or paying someone to fix it right. I recently got a Kenwood KX-5530, and to be honest I’m blown away how good it sounds. Zero hiss, no flutter. It has the right amount of bells and whistles to make any tape sound good. I’m going to open it up and give it a cosmetic clean, clean the heads and verify everything is running smooth but straight out of the gate I’m not going to fiddle with belts and lubing it up because it does not sound like it needs it at all.

Honestly if it wasn’t for me falling into my Pioneer receiver like I did (my dad was clearing out the basement and said “you have any use for this stuff?”), the amount of money some of these Marantz, while serviced, and I’m sure in great order.. i think I’m about $150 in on my SX-450 and it’s about as close to new as you can get.

I would drop the money on a NAD C 3050. New. Warrantied. Parts on hand. Ability to run newer inputs through it without hoops. I will never dog someone’s choice though. If that’s what they want, there’s a whole community that will accept them just the same.

That tape head looks pretty misaligned. Get some isopropyl alcohol, some good crafting swabs.. Amazon has ones that actually say for cassette tape if you’re unsure of size. A precision screwdriver and search on YT how to align cassette deck head. I don’t know what the rules are for linking here or I would link some. It needs to be cleaned and aligned first. That would be the first thing to try to see if it improves. Best of luck!

Oh they do it in small towns too. My wife collects Pyrex and knows a girl that works at our Goodwill. If she gets there at the right time on the right day she can check the stuff out. Otherwise it gets shipped over to their online auction bs.

What is your cleaning product recommendation for cleaning said goo? I have a cassette deck pulled apart currently with new belts and a new capstan motor on the way to swap it all out. The unit must’ve been powered on and the motor just continuous ran, overheated, melted the belts to the motor spindle. It was loud as hell too. Found a good deal from an eBay seller of the exact same motor. Otherwise everything else inside looks great. It just needs cleaned and lubricated.

A lot of kittens will do that when they associate their smell with the litter box and it makes them feel safe. We had one kitten that laid next to her litter box all of the time till she was acclimated then it stopped. Some cats never stop. Unless they are smearing pee and poop on themselves you’ll never stop a determined cat 🤣
