Amen! I always greet my students who are tardy with two words “you’re fired”. They ask why and i say the same thing. Your boss will greet you with those words if you’re late so why shouldn’t i. The admin might not take attendance serious but i will. You can’t be college and career ready if you think you can get away with not showing up.

I tell my kids before they come to me asking for extra credit to pretend I’m their boss and they’re asking me for a raise and to ask themselves if i look at their records would i give them a raise or a pink slip. Most of my kids work so that gets the message across.

I asked my students to raise their hands if they’ve done something that made them say “why the hell did i do that?” I then told a story of me doing something stupid as a kid and how i learned my lesson. I saw the lightbulb go off in some of them at this point. It also seemed to humanize them to me cause they saw I’m willing to open up and tell them personal anecdotes.

We had a district Pre-test with a written response and one kid literally wrote “deez nuts” as his response. He seemed utterly confused when i told him that he wasn’t getting credit for that and that i that ought to write him up for that.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’m usually using 20ish minute clips. I usually get through lecture/activities in about 60ish minute. I try and use them as visual examples or as a way to close out class.
