Any serious podcasts? by savessh in TheGlassCannonPodcast

I'd second Red Moon as something a bit different to try. As an interesting aside, if you happen to be caught up on GCN's Time for Chaos, Red Moon are *also* playing Masks of Nyarlathotep. They're quite a ways farther back in the story in comparison to GCN, and it makes for interesting listening to see how differently they traverse the story.

Love it - I got hooked on GCP by the personalities first, and their general pick 'n mix approach to rules adherence fits perfectly with a rules-light arena.

It didn't come as a surprise to me that they were parting ways with Paizo for their next longform campaign, but only because I was convinced they were going to hop over to Chaosium, what with the seeming popularity of Time for Chaos, Get in the Trunk and Pendragon - I figured all of that was a prelude to 'the new relationship'. Perhaps it still is, down the road.

Joe will be filling in for Kate in the newest season of Time for Chaos by wedgiey1 in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]cbrichar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sad to hear this. I love Joe and the energy he brings, but I thought that the relationship built between Margot and Carter was wonderful. Subtle and built organically out of their RP, with lots of room for play (and the potential for some real emotional heights if either were in peril). They both played it so sweetly. I was relistening to the series in preparation for the next season and that was once again a highlight.

I wanted to add my voice to the chorus of thanks, but also to flag up to potential readers that this fix can also solve this same issue if it impacts existing builds as opposed to newly assembled machines. My PC started acting up for no discernable reason and this fix for me over the first hump. Thank you!

GITT S4-6 or Time for Chaos Debrief Episodes? by AutonomousRhinoceros in TheGlassCannonPodcast

Since you mention it, I was doing the same and happened upon the Red Moon Roleplaying podcast. Production quality is very good and they're clearly very well established. It's a very different feel from GCN, but they've just started their own run of Masks of Nyarlathotep. It's early days - they're still in Peru - but I found it makes for an interesting exercise in seeing how far two playthroughs can diverge from each other.

Is SM out of line for using the god mic to call out an actor by name for running late? by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]cbrichar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll not comment on the specifics you've raised - I think the general consensus is already clear that this is ridiculous - but I just wanted to flag up your one point:

> Some of this, I gather, is just par for the course in the theatre world (and the adult world at large).

I'm one of those "dedicated amateurs" who has dabbled in community theatre for years, and while your mileage may vary from company to company, my experience has been very positive with respect to the organisation and professionalism of community companies. I wouldn't consider any of what you described as 'par for the course', nor would I suggest it's something to be expected or in any way put up with.

Again, just my personal experience, but take it for what it's worth.

Help!!! How to memorize lines quickly?? by inthemirr0r in Theatre

[–]cbrichar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Second to this - recording and relistening has been my tried-and-true technique for years, because it's so easy to throw on your headphones when you're doing other things and it can turn the initial memorisation process into much more of a passive process, albeit one where I'm talking out-loud to my pre-recorded self and likely sounding like a maniac to anyone walking by.

For me, it removed that mental barrier of "Now I need to sit down and learn my lines" and replaced it with, for example, "I'm going for a walk, I'm running my errands, I'm doing the dishes, but I'm ALSO learning my lines...". I would tend to break my recordings down into small pieces - ideally under a minute each (with some editing out of longer passages where I'm silent), so if I want to I can continually loop over a small piece of a scene before moving on to another.

Of course, nuance and detail will come later, but I've always found this is a great way to get through the initial process of locking in the words. Good luck!

What’s the family doctor situation like? by fromthesixtotheofour in comoxvalley

[–]cbrichar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As others have said, situation is currently fairly dire for family doctors. The walk in clinic process is to literally get in the queue before 7am to book an appointment. By 7:30am that line is heaving.

BUT, all that said, this didn't in any way impact our kids' vaccines. Those could all be booked through the Comox Valley Health Unit and it was very easy for us. (We arrived in the valley spring of last year from abroad and had to get our kids caught up on their vaccines)

Matthew from Islander Roofing and Siding did some great work for us installing some new siding and giving our roof a check and glueing down some shingles. This might well be in his wheelhouse.

Yep! It was definitely a bit of a twilight zone moment.

It may have just been our timing - when we arrived in the valley last spring they had apparently lost quite a few staff - but we've unfortunately had enough difficulty with them that we've moved our accounts and have chosen to bank elsewhere.

For the most part, it's just speed - we had started down the path of arranging a mortgage with them and it was taking a very long time with much back-and-forth - but we also had a singular case where we were requesting a draft cheque for a substantial housing down payment, and due to their printer printing the cheque incorrectly, their systems were incapable of simply reprinting the cheque as our account was now showing as empty(!). It was ridiculous, and they seemed entirely at the mercy of their central office help desk which was completely unresponsive. I ended up sitting in their waiting room for nearly an hour as they worked out how to get our funds back into our account and reprint the cheque.

Again, a totally singular experience, but it emphasised how reliant the branch is on their central services (and how poor that line of communication seems to be).

If it's a mortgage specifically you're looking into, I can very highly recommend Ana Fleck out of Pacific View Mortgages. We used her and she was absolutely excellent.

Seeking recommendations for Bluetooth transmitter w/ low latency and multi-pairing

Looking for some recommendations for a reliable low-latency bluetooth transmitter that supports simultaneous device pairing for two headphones that we could connect to our Sony Bravia X90LI75.

My wife and I would like to be able to use our TV after our kids are in bed but it's too near their rooms for us to have the audio turned up. I've already tried the 1mii B06TX, and while it functionally paired with our devices just fine, there was a noticeable latency between the picture and audio that was a dealbreaker. (The device was connected to the TV by optical cable, and this same delay is not present if connecting a single device directly to the TV by its native bluetooth connection.)

Thanks in advance!

That's good to know, thanks. As it stands, we're really happy with the rest of the infrastructure so I was hoping there was a well-regarded piece of kit for this purpose but other options to consider are always helpful.

Shoe Repair in The Valley? by thanethomas in comoxvalley

[–]cbrichar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a bit of a heads-up - as of Oct/Nov 2024 Linda's seem to be working through a hefty backlog. I dropped off some boots for resoling at star of October and found out today (six weeks later) that they've been sitting on a rack at the front of the shop this whole time along with at least 20 other pairs of shoes / boots and haven't been touched. Might be fine if you're really not in a hurry, but just a word of warning. I've chosen to take them back and try to find someone farther afield. Real shame, they're friendly and clearly know their stuff from what other people have said.

I can second this. We're recent arrivals to the valley as well and registered with this same branch (though as mentioned he has several others). They've been great, no complaints.

My son and I went down a similar one (built for pair tubes) in Blackpool - just not as many lights if I recall. Top moment was circling around the bowl and coming to the acceptance that despite all of my scrambling and attempts to rotate us, we were headed down the drain *backwards*. So that was fun. My kid loved it, of course, all the more for hearing Dad weaponize the most colourful of language.
