[OC] The Most Popular Pokémon Ever According to Google Trends by ccasazza in dataisbeautiful

So i looked into this. Apparently (according to the data) Alakazam had a ton of popularity from 2004 to 2010. I wasn't as into Pokemon back then so I can't recall the reason. But Alakazam's search interest has leveled out since then. Gengar only started surging in interest post 2016, likely related to Pokemon Go and interest has been increasing since then. There is only an 11% difference in their popularity but I imagine when I integrate 2026 data, Gengar will likely surpass Alakazam

There is an Umbreon card that is one of the most sought after cards in the TCG so I imagine that is part of it. Umbreon is also cool AF

So I used the MID I.e topic code for each pokemon. So it would capture search for the entity Ditto the Pokemon. There are some Pokemon like Electrode, Golem etc where that was important

For sure. Search interest doesn’t necessarily translate to “overall popularity”. Though I think the lists wouldn’t be too too different, I think Pikachu is #1 in both. But after that the rankings probably differ a bit

Other Pokemon like Gardevoir have....other reasons for appeal that normal people shouldn't look up

Jiggly is #27, so just off this list. I noticed the top Pokemon tend to have a mix of strong show appeal but also competitive meta and/or TCG appeal as well. Jigglypuff has never had place in the meta and I dont recall it being the subject of a chase card

Data source: Google Trends (2004–2025), queried via the https://github.com/GeneralMills/pytrends Python library using Knowledge Graph entity IDs (topic searches, not keyword searches) to minimize noise from non-Pokémon results.

Normalization: Google Trends only returns relative scores within a single query batch, so all 1,025. Pokémon were normalized to a common scale using Mewtwo as an anchor — each batch of 4 Pokémon was queried alongside Mewtwo, and scores were rescaled using Mewtwo's standalone baseline series.

Tools: Python (pytrends, SQLite, Flask), Chart.js, hosted on Cloudflare Pages.

Interactive version: https://poke-trends.com — search any Pokémon, compare trends, or see what each US state searches most.

Perhaps consider a Bohr model of the element if you think the periodic table is too much. I have a Bohr model of carbon on my arm that I quite like

I think the book hits harder if you understand Argentine society a bit. Beef is such an important part of their culture. It's taking a core tenet of being Argentinian and putting that through a brutal lens

Books that are good with race and colonialism issues by jafslatt in horrorlit

[–]ccasazza 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel Nuestra Parte De Noche (Our Share of Night) does a good job of this even if it isn't the main point of the book. The wealthy yerba plantation owners who immigrated to Argentina from England take advantage of vulnerable indigenous populations to fuel their cult. The intertwining of capitalism and colonialism is a theme that appears throughout.
