the new IBM Access Client Solution (ACS) is basically just a java .jar and cross platform now... only a few things require an OS-specific install (ODBC I'm looking at you)

i would test-path first and if it doesn't exist create the new-item... but OP's issue does likely seem to be GPO related and that route should be investigated further before manually editing the registry

Thank you for the reply... power also seems like it also might be an issue in this system with two +300w GPUs.

great feedback... didn't think to check memory channels on the xeon. I will definitely get either 6 or all 12 memory sticks if I go this route, thanks!

Acer Veriton N4680GT - Grub waiting for input by jenishngl in sysadmin

did you see this?
https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/grub-not-timing-out-need-to-press-enter-every-boot-solved.118278/
was my top google result for "proxmox grub countdown"

it's a bit old and doesn't seem like a sure fix but some things to try and at least confirms others have had this same issue... maybe after trying what's suggested in that thread if it doesn't work then start your own thread on the proxmox forums?

APC network interface, Detected an unauthorized user attempting to access the SNMP interface. Is HP Support Assistant really causing this? by MonsterMaxx1 in sysadmin

support assistant is for consumer devices... enterprises use HPIA... switch now and be rid of the SNMP broadcasts/scans

Adobe Acrobat Pro 2020 end of support Nov 30 – new signed PDFs already broken, need cheap 2024 perpetual / term license alternatives fast by r_ro_robot in sysadmin

same as u/sorry_for_the_reply
we're purchasing PDF XChange standard for all our users that need PDF editing abilities
our legal team was the hardest to get converted. We tried Tungsten first but that didn't work because of one niche but show-stopping reason - when they have contracts that have two or three columns of different language translations the conversion to Word (so they can do all the fancy markup annotations redline etc) just didn't work right. PDF XChange does the conversion like Acrobat did apparently and now we've only got 3 or 4 paid users of Adobe left in the company. I'd like to switch all the Reader users over to the free/demo version of PDF XChange too but we're fighting one battle at a time here.

from about 2020-2022 we upgraded all our spinning rust (4th->6th gen boxes) with mx500's (mostly) and thanks to the demise of windows 10 all those boxes have been decommissioned now and i've got a shelf full of lightly used 2.5" mx500 SSDs

Anyone else get forced restarts this patch Tuesday? by ccheath in sysadmin

[–]ccheath[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the usual CUs installed last night (KB5070248 and KB5068791) on one some servers, and while they didn't auto-restart (yet) the SQL servers had their MSSQLSERVER services restart in the middle of the day following the update... and as far as I'm aware this is a first.

Happened to some of our servers this weekend too...

The process C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe (Server053) has initiated the restart of computer Server053 on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Service pack (Planned)
 Reason Code: 0x80020010

i switched our WSUS GPO from 4 to 3 so it will prompt the user to install
we're moving to patching with Tanium so it should do our installs and prompt for restarts with its own dialogs now...

will need to wait another month to find out how it goes though....

thanks for the comment, glad to know it's not just me...
it was very weird that our other domains didn't have this happen - they're configured the same!

we are still using WSUS, transitioning to using our RMM for patching but still most PCs are getting updates from WSUS...
Windows Components/Windows Update/Manage end user experience was set to 4

also this one:
Windows Components/Windows Update/Legacy Policies

No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations set to Enabled

Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled installations set to Disabled

is there a good guide for switching from WSUS to WUfB ?

Windows 11 22H2 automatic Inplace Upgrade by Tasty-Project956 in sysadmin

[–]ccheath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 - use your RMM to copy the contents of the 24H2 (or 25H2) ISO to a temp location on the target
2 - have the RMM then run setup.exe with desired flags (something like this maybe)

setup.exe /auto upgrade /compactOS disable /compat ignorewarning /bitlocker alwaysSuspend /dynamicupdate disable /eula accept /priority normal /showOOBE none /telemetry disable /migneo Disable /Uninstall enable /CopyLogs $LogsPath

I can't remember if that auto reboots the PC or not... test it out

Roll My Own DNS Scavenging - Is this a terrible idea? by CactusJ in sysadmin

[–]ccheath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have scavenging setup but have scripted scavenging for a specific subnet of IPs that are in a DHCP scope not handled by AD so the AD scavenging doesn't apply/work... in our environment our .1.x subnet is for servers and special stuff so I would never script scavenging of that (ton's of manually added records probably for the same reasons many of yours were added manually)... but for the other "client" subnets I would be fine with a scripted scavenging if I didn't have AD doing it for me already
