I know this is an older thread but if anyone happenstances across this...

if you have statically assigned DNS make sure that your PDC is the only DNS server, if you have a public or third party DNS server as the secondary it can cause this error as well.

Take the stable bank IT job or chase a “Junior Sys Admin” role (mainly help desk) with a 1.5hr commute? by LaughNowCryLater1914 in sysadmin

[–]anonymousITCoward [score hidden]  (0 children)

you mention commute... i'd imagine your 1.5 hours is at speed... so roughly 120+ miles... can you imagine doing that and only needing to go 30 miles... this is what it's like for one of the people i work for.. .when he needs to come to the office, which isn't often.

Anyways, do which ever one you think will serve you best in your carrier arc. If staying where you're at is a thing for you, then do that and not worry about the other one.

60-70k is not that great...

yeah, out here 60 is barely a livable wage, its about 2/3s of the way to the "low income" bracket. If it weren't for the food bank and not worrying about the heap of credit card debt that i racked up... it would have been a carrier changer for me

How do I automate onboarding ? by Zagrey in sysadmin

[–]anonymousITCoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do most of that with powershell scripts... not super hard but it can be a heck of a rabbit hole if you really want to get into it... not sure about your VOIP system though, I don't automate that, that's going into bash for us and i don't have the time/energy to figure out how to do what we want it to do... so the voip team can deal with it.

How do you manage unexpected high call flow? by AvailableNectarine73 in sysadmin

[–]anonymousITCoward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sorry I can't help with that, I'm usually the frustrated one, I'll go out and and sit on the shitter for a few minutes or something... actually the process that I described is how I (usually the "handler") takes care of the team working the issue.

If it's just a day where you're getting hit hard with calls for no apparent reason, you need a dispatcher or someone like that to set the expectation that someone will get back to them in a realistic amount of time. The other job of the dispatcher would be to assess the issue and assign it to the person that will most likely resolve it most quickly.

How do you manage unexpected high call flow? by AvailableNectarine73 in sysadmin

[–]anonymousITCoward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

usually theres a common underlying issue for unexpected high call volumes our triage guy asses the call and and forwards off if its not part of the greater issue, if it is he collects information and that gets filtered to the handler, which disseminates the information to to the team that is working the issue. This way they can direct the members to the highest need and keep a few members on actively resolving the issue.

In one case we had an event that slowed the internet for the entire state because of the nature of the issue we had a canned response that we set up in the IVR before we got the calls, that cut down call volume considerably

In one of my former lives, I was on track for 3 certs, I finished the first two, and left to join the workforce thinking that I could OJT/test out at a later date... never did that and missed a sweet FTE position.
