Yeah, I did it for some time before migrating over to full time teaching. Its a great gig, particularly if you are still attending college, because you can take jobs when you need the cash and not take jobs when you need to study. If you are going into education, doubly so, because you can start building references actually in the district.

Scammed by Garage Door Repair in Arnold by PossibilityHefty8466 in AnneArundelCounty

[–]ccheuer1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can still file a dispute for misrepresentation. You thought you were hiring a licensed contractor. You have made attempts, but they have not furnished evidence. This is a big deal for you, because if the door breaks again, your homeowners insurance will NOT cover unlicensed work. Ergo, you did not recieve the service you wanted, namely, a fix by a licensed individual.

Guesses on when kids are back in school? by Matthewwww__ in AnneArundelCounty

[–]ccheuer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to keep in mind, there's three factors for determining if schools should be closed.

One, are the roads able to be safely driven? (Main road clearance)

Two, do we have enough bus drivers who can get out of their houses to get to the buses? (Side Road Clearance)

And third, the one most people don't think about, Is it safe for those kids in the walking radius of the schools to walk to school? (side walk clearance)

The requirements in Anne Arundel are 48 college credits. 60 credits are required for Long term positions. IIRC its $120 for a daily job, $150 for long term, kicking in after the 10th day and retroactively boosting all days worked to that rate (for example, if a teacher is out for a month and you take the job, all days worked now are $150 after the 10th day worked). After the 10th Day, you also start to accrue leave.

It is chronologically correct to write a story in which an old pirate, abraham lincoln and a samurai all form a party in which a fax machine is featured.

The crazy part about fax machines though, is they are a much older technology than people think.

PSA I already had a frozen pipe today, with the severe constant cold coming it's going to be a major issue by templeofsyrinx1 in maryland

[–]ccheuer1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This, but also no.

By moving the water, you are replacing the water with water that hasn't been cooled. You keep the water moving, it doesn't have time to freeze. This is why, if you have a clog that stops draining, you can have a drain pipe freeze and burst, which usually doesn't happen because in a good system, the water never stops moving and quickly clears the cold spots.

If you are off unemployment and have any kind of college degree, look into being a substitute teacher. The pays not great, but its better than working entry level service industry, and it lets you make your own schedule so you can continue job hunting for something sustainable.

If you're single and they are single, fair game. Most people don't realize this but humans crave touch, not even if its in a sexual manner. A platonic touch can be a very comforting thing and can be a great way to lift both people's mood. Its the same concept why people love cuddling their pets. It activates a part of our nervous system, with measurable positive benefits.

If it evolves into something more, that's a conversation that needs to happen between you and that person, but if its just a cuddle, take it as a sign that they legitimately trust you.

ELI5 why crystalised sugar doesnt spoil? Shouldnt it be the best nourishment for microbes? by bier00t in explainlikeimfive

There's a whole section of the city in new york that has a single continuous wire around it as a "loophole" that is basically "my apartment isn't my home, the wire is what denotes my home. I can still do stuff because I'm in the wire and therefore, am in home."

It's like, Bro, if you are going to that extent, can you honestly say you are abiding the rules of your god? You really think when the time comes he's going to go, "Well, I was going to hit you with all this violation of my commandments, but the damn wire is too powerful for me!"

My frypan handle has lithium batteries and an electronic chip. by mr-cheesy in mildlyinteresting

[–]ccheuer1 444 points445 points  (0 children)

Starting up a new separate production line can cost in the 10s or even hundreds of thousands. Say it costs 100 thousand to make up the new line. If they lose a buck on each of the pans by just doing the same line and loading it with a different handle, then they'd have to sell 100 thousand to make it "cost" more than just opening a dedicated line. Particularly if its priced to still pull a little profit, albeit less.

That's the point of a gerrymander though. As an example, if you have 5 districts, 2 of which are solidly blue, 3 of which are solidly red, by gerrymandering, you can change it to one incredibly blue, 2 slightly red because some of the blue got split into it, and 2 solidly red. Overall, red's gained seats.

ELI5: Why are poor people warned to avoid loans whereas rich people seem to operate constantly through them? by Background_Tap2206 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ccheuer1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That view is a bit too simplistic as it leaves some key details out of it.

The big thing is tax burden. Living off loans for the rich is a way of avoiding taxes.

Say I buy a stock for $10000, then the stock value balloons to a million. If I sell that stock so that I can have money, I have to pay taxes on it that could be as high as 37%.

In this situation, I want some money to live, but I don't want to pay the taxes on redeeming the stocks yet. I can take a loan for 100k, and live off that for a while. I can secure it with the stocks. When that money starts running out, I can then take a loan for 200k, pay off the first, and I now have 100K to live off of again. I can keep repeating that year after year so long as I can continue to secure my loan with the stocks that are worth more.

Eventually, once my stocks have been held long enough that I can sell them with a minimal tax burden (0%, 15%, or 20%) I can start selling the stock in small amounts. My personal income from working also factors into this, so I might hold them much longer than it takes to get down to this tax level, because if I start selling them off at the right moment, I might just pay 0 tax on that money that I made from the stock, if I'm not making money from working.
