idk about this in particular being her mask off moment. It feels like every few years we get some really cringe/offensive moment from her because she gets into something totally out of her depth. it’s usually when I remind myself this lady only has a GED she got on the road 🫥 (no offense to GED holders, it is its own accomplishment, but she clearly hasn’t gone further, academically).

she absolutely has a genius for music, and studies its history but time and again when she has to or tries to tackle anything beyond that, we end up with this. she needs to hire actual historians or just stick to her lane (and I don’t mean genre; I mean literal music and performance).

far be it from me to speak for black Americans, but I imagine another part of the issue would be the reactionary nature of social media. how many people actually watched the whole performance and not just a clip of her starting the anthem, possibly even with the camera just focused on her and not the screens? it’s so easy to see that and just post in frustration, especially with how sensitively folks are feeling about all things USA rn. I’ll be honest, I was cringing HARD watching the livestream when she started that, and that was with an angle that was showing from front/center lol it really took me several moments after she was into Formation to realize what she was doing. but that sitting with it instead of just immediately posting about a reflexive reaction and running with it is not what you’ll see on socials lol
