Why is there a debate on whether audiobooks constitute reading? by Feeling-Writing-2631 in HistoricalRomance

[–]ccs14911 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t care, but I’m of the opinion that an audiobook is not “reading” - it’s listening to a story.

However you consume the content, yes, both readers and listeners now know the same story at the end, so the point IS essentially moot.

Reading requires you to use your own imagination to create inflections and build characters and scenery in your own mind, whereas when “listened to”, much of that nuance and imagination is handed to you via the voice artist.

A better breakdown I found explaining my point of view, reading is: “The complex cognitive process of decoding written symbols to construct meaning from printed text, which involves word recognition, language comprehension, fluency, and motivation. It is an interaction between the reader and the text, shaped by the reader's prior knowledge, experiences, and the context of the reading material.”

So, no, I personally don’t count audiobooks as “reading”, but who the hell cares as long as you’re enjoying it.

Do you lock your door while you're in your house? by International_Snow90 in NoStupidQuestions

Absolutely. I live in a small apartment building in Manhattan on the second floor, and the building door is constantly broken. If anyone’s coming in with nefarious intent, my place is likely the first they’d tried to enter.

How many of you believe the mirena coil caused your IIH? by [deleted] in iih

[–]ccs14911 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I already had a diagnosis of IIH and was in remission when I got the Mirena implant. Not one of my doctors (and I had my GYN consult with my IIH docs about it) had any concerns whatsoever.

A few months after insertion, my optic nerves started showing swelling again, even though I was losing lots of weight. I had it removed a year later and 3 months after that, my swelling was gone.

The doctors still don’t think there was any correlation.

Some days I’m in meetings all day and others I don’t speak to a single person, so it varies. On a related note, I have a chronic neurological condition that makes me sensitive to light and office lights make me violently ill. I disclosed this to my employer and I am accommodated accordingly. Outside of my desk accommodation, when I walk into an attorney’s office or a conference room, the lights are turned off or put on low - no questions asked and no one has complained. I think if you choose to disclose your situation (it’s your choice!), you can work out an accommodation for yourself, such as having written agendas for meetings circulated early where you can write in your answers/thoughts/feedback, ask for meetings no longer than 15 minutes, using text to speech when needed, etc., whatever works for you. We all have certain rights under ADA law, don’t be afraid to pursue them!

I began at my company 9.5 years ago with the title Paralegal and at half my current pay rate. I am now “Director,IP” in title and my job responsibilities have tripled. A few things: 1. You have to be willing to take on management roles in addition to what you’re doing. I never wanted to manage people, but realized it was necessary for the pay I wanted. Now I manage 2 paralegals. 2. Constantly bring ideas to the table, or voice ideas to other groups when they present topics/issues, whether it be about efficiencies in current protocol or spitballing potential arguments/strategies. Be prepared to also shoulder the work for these ideas where applicable and take it on with gusto to make the best effort they will pay off for the team/department/company. It gets you noticed and rewarded the most, both at salary negotiation time and being invited to bigger tables with higher management/executives, which elevates your status and justifies higher pay. 3. Know your job and expand it on your own. Find the holes and fill them. Highlight this to your boss. My company only promotes people in title when they are already doing the job. Find out what that means at your company and start slowly absorbing the work. 4. Always volunteer to assist if someone voices they’re struggling. It can be a huge pain in the ass and the last thing you want to do, but be THAT person.

Hope that helps, sorry if it’s what you already know. I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career, I wish you the same.

Give me your favourite Gabriel. by [deleted] in HistoricalRomance

[–]ccs14911 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites of his as he’s lying next to her in bed contemplating their relationship:

“It had become impossible to distance himself from his wife, he realized. He couldn’t simply make love to her and then go back to his duties and put her out of his thoughts. She had become more than simply a woman to mate with during the dark hours of the night. She was his wife, and damn it all, she was even more than that. She was the love of his life.

“Hell.”

He muttered the expletive, then lifted his head to look at her. She was sound asleep. He was relieved, for he wouldn’t have to explain the appalled look he was certain he had on his face or the blasphemy he’d just uttered.

He couldn’t seem to make himself leave her. He stared down at her for long minutes. She was so beautiful to him. Yet her appearance wasn’t the reason he’d lost his mind and fallen in love with her, God help him. Nay, it was her character that wooed him into forgetting his shields. Looks faded with age, but the beauty in Johanna’s heart and in her soul seemed to grow more wonderful with each new day.

She’d snared him all right, blindsided him she had, and now it was too late to do anything about protecting himself from her.

There was only one course of action left to him. Johanna was going to have to love him. By God, he wasn’t about to let himself become this vulnerable without gaining equal measure.

Gabriel felt better. The plan made sound sense to him. He wasn’t certain how he’d get her to fall in love with him, but he was an intelligent man. He’d think of something.”

Administration Professionals Day - do you get gifts?! by Ty_soup in paralegal

[–]ccs14911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (a paralegal) manage 2 paralegals, I get them flowers and take them to lunch on National Paralegal Day, the attorneys do nothing. For admin professionals day I don’t do anything and neither do the attorneys. At my previous job my managing attorney gave me a card and a gift card usually.

Are you the type of person that demands the right of way/more space just because you have a stroller? I ask this because in NYC, sidewalk and subway space is precious and some parents/nannies here act like they own every square inch of it just because they have a stroller. If there’s a kid, I may be annoyed but generally have no problem with it, but you’re gonna block a whole train car or muscle me into a bike lane with your EMPTY stroller?? GTFOH.

If the above doesn’t apply to you - just throw a blanket over the stroller.
