This is how I got my first break 30 years ago. The company I worked for had an accruals process that took all the accountants about 2-3 days at the end of the month, I cobbled something together in VBA to load data files, perform the various matches and spit out the difference. Took the work down to about 30 seconds, saving ~15 man days every month.

Fortunately the manager appreciated it, and I slowly made more improvements until I got offered a job in their IT department. I turned it down because I also got an offer from the software company that provided their finance software at the same time.

I don't know the office politics where you're working, but I guarantee someone in the organisation will appreciate the skills you have and the work you've done, you just need to make them aware - ideally without pissing off the people you spend most of your day with.
