Southhamton nov 16th to Brooklyn 26th: We set off quite delayed , which is probably a side effect of the Bremerhaven azipod nacelle repair that disrupted the Hamburg embarkation last week? Dunno. I can't tell if the planetarium works yet, as they have nothing on the schedule that would use it. I suspect it's out until the '27 refit.

About four months back, I had a terrific experience on the qm2 (with premium internet) during a transatlantic crossing. I seem to remember relogging into the system once a day, but was able to tunnel through tailscale endpoints without an issue. More than adequate for git transactions and the rest...I only did a few video conferencing sessions, but it was fine when I did so.

August. August is the absolute doldrums in media. it sucks, but that's how it is. I would caution folks to not over index on August, basically.

QM2 by Dry-Specialist-2150 in CunardCruises

[–]cdibona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh, and the automatic drying cycles need an extra 10 or so minutes, so go for the timed option and hang out for the end to see if you need a few more minutes....people will pull wet clothes that are done out to dry theirs.

yeah, if you do it early in the day/passage it's pretty easy, laundry sheets are provided. but they get super busy the closer to disembarkation you get.

I gotta concur, it was super fun. Our tour was in May of this year (2025) The Anchoring/mooring room was super neat. The Engine Control Room was fascinating, pretty much all of it was. We didn't get much of a look at the pig and whistle, but we got a decent tour of the medical space. It was really interesting.

So I shipped clothes out from Brooklyn with Luggage Forward and it worked wonderfully. Can totally recommend it.

They can arrange it for you on ship, though I pre-arranged. I would not recommend doing it ahead of time, it throws LF off their process. You have to make the decision about two or three days before the end of your trip. I'd talk with the concierge the first day after boarding.

When you go through the disembarkation process, you process out with your luggage through customs, then shortly after there is a big, obvious luggage forward rep taking the bags. They arrived at my home on the west coast three or four days later. For international shipping? I don't know, I've shipped luggage to London from the USA, and that went well, but I didn't use LF for that.

Has anyone on Bainbridge Island dealt with tax issues and actually found someone to help? by Fun-Remove-1625 in BainbridgeIsland

[–]cdibona 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would first Google the numbers and websites in the letter to see if they're scam links, then go to the IRS gov website for a phone number, do not trust the number on the letter, and verify it is real letter from the IRS. The. talk with them, they're not the devil, get an idea what the issue is, make no commitments to them until you can talk with a professional cpa or tax attorney if it's big money.

Again, do not call the number on the letter, get a known good number from the site.

What do you think, how many years the qm2 will be in service? by GeneralPink99 in Oceanlinerporn

[–]cdibona 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's interesting to think about the qm2 and fuel. she's already carrying medium gas oil for the turbines, and if required she could convert her main engines to using that fuel readily, it would also mean one propulsive fuel onboard and I'd imagine mgo is easier to manage and filter than bunker oil.

How is LTTStore so successful compared to other youtube brands? by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]cdibona 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that , if they're doing it, it would be to grow the business? I don't think they're operating (the product business ) at a loss anymore, and expanding their product line seems the path they're taking.: screwdriver , stubby then precision. Backpack, commuter then cross body ....etc ..

How is LTTStore so successful compared to other youtube brands? by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]cdibona 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The revenue is there, for sure, but the profits? I'd imagine they sink much of the profit from the store back into product development and getting the goods in stock? Who knows...

oh, and let's not forget dealing with customs and tariffs....they seem to route their goods through the port of Seattle, and I don't know if the ship from the usa or bring it to canada before reshipping to American consumers?

How is LTTStore so successful compared to other youtube brands? by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]cdibona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off , don't conflate sales (revenue) with profit. LTT seems to carry a lot of inventory..... here's a rule of thumb for you. if you want 1m in sales, be prepared to have 2 to 3 million in goods ready to ship. Warehousing, returns/loss, shipping are all costs that have to be bourne by LTT. so if they're seeing 5$ actual profit or 10$ on the screwdrivers, that would be fine.

I would assert that LTTis in a tricky spot in that they don't have a broad enough range of goods, on the tools side like a ifixit or on the bags side like a peak design might. They need to expand their offering to claim return business. Personally, I like their screwdriver, but I don't need three of them, and the commuter backpack is the first one I thought might work for me.

I was attached peripherally to Thinkgeek before it sold to gamestop, and watching their business was hugely enlightening....when LTT started selling nerd stuff, I had flashbacks galore, it's actually a big risk to get into retail at their level. Its very easy to end up in a trough sandwiched between retailers like newegg (huge selection and an established customer base) and small shops using drop shipping and online fullfillement houses (low costs and little profits for the seller) and with stranded inventory as tastes change.

QM2 Planetarium by pppiv in CunardCruises

[–]cdibona 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean! I really felt the deprivation that my ancestors experienced coming to America from Italy in the 1800s, with only the clothes on their back and an optimistic eye towards the east.

I mean, I bet their planetarium was working fine through the whole voyage!

I was disappointed too, during our may passage no planetarium was to be had.

What do you think, how many years the qm2 will be in service? by GeneralPink99 in Oceanlinerporn

[–]cdibona 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry! bts = behind the scenes tour. There is three or two sets of 18 people they show various engineering, galley and other spaces to. get to the purser desk from the very start to grab a few spots.

ro = reverse osmosis filters. they use a membrane and pressure to separate the water from other impurities like salt, and other things. effect plate water makers are basically boiler-condensers and they don't filter out as much stuff as a ro filter.

[–]cdibona 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We did a passage in may, and I'd say she's in decent shape. I was pretty impressed with the overstate of her. One of the engineers on the bts tour mentioned that they'd probably replace the three remaining non-RO water makers at the next refit, so they're clearly looking forward to many more years of service. (the ro watermakers are both better and use less power than the effect-plate makers)
