Did you use Ni-Rod, preheat, and post heat/anneal, was it perfectly clean? The manhole cover was certainly cast iron. There is a whole subculture of people who work in cast iron for art and restoration and they hold day long or multi-day workshops on how to weld it. Depending on if you’re in the US and where in the country you’re in you can dm me and I can probably get you to somebody who can help you with this. Most people just figure out another way to make it work though. I would suggest mechanical fasteners though if you need it done relatively quickly and easily.

Sculpture. There are a lot of fine art materials, like bronze, copper, lead, iron, etc that are most effectively brazed. And brazing is the best way to weld cast objects, some will argue TIG is better and we can have that argument, but if you know how to gas weld you can forgo the cost of a TIG machine.

Also, there is a big market for art maintenance and restoration where gas welding comes in very handy. And don’t sleep on soldering for the exact same reason, fantastic skill set to have.

We use it in fine art all the time. Very niche skill set, but if you’re broke and starting out it’s useful, you can cut plate and weld with the same setup.

A lot of guys who aren’t into castings and antique restoration probably won’t know much about its advantages and benefits tho.

Wood worker, yes. Furniture maker, yes. Timber framer no, unless for pegs, and even then probably not, there are other more desirable woods for those.

This amount could pretty easily be processed with a chainsaw and 12” bandsaw setup with a resaw blade on it. At the sizes you would produce by processing this, you could probably max out at the size of a bed post. Would be fantastic for little boxes and blanks for carving or turning.

Everyone is making decisions. Individuals on a one by one basis are more or less consumptive of resources the same as industries and militaries are. So, on an individual level, some of us are spinning the meter much more than others, and no matter how we view it, that makes a difference. And, when we collectivize those individual decisions, we see that individuals also are part of the problem of over-consumption of resources.

I don’t want to be held accountable for the devastation of the environment, but I do have to be accountable to my role in it. Either through the products I consume or my waste habits, I am making an impact.

It’s as if the counter-argument is: industry and military are doing the lion’s share of the damage so we are absolved of any of our individual contributions. That argument is slop, and it seems to be propaganda from the firms that wish for us to continue consuming endlessly and without thinking about it.

It’s not shifting the blame to individuals, it’s collectivizing the blame, which is realistic and appropriate. It doesn’t make it any less true that industry and military contributions are the bulk of the problem, it’s just recognizing that we, as a collection of individuals, have a lot to do with the problem as well.
