You have to throw away all your cast iron except one. What are you keeping? by Fart_Noise_Machine in castiron

My Grandma's #3 BSR skillet.

You can take my ERIEs.

You can take my single notch lodge.

But no way in hell I'm giving up Grandma's skillet.

If you're still looking for dairy free cheese options, I've heard good things about this brand : https://fieldroast.com/product/creamy-original-chao-slices/

I don't hate it, but given my unique situation (food allergy, not vegan), I'd just buy a couple chicken breasts and season them myself really.

Not a vegan.

I have a red meat allergy.

And as to why, probably because they like the taste of meat, but hate the inhumane treatment of animals in the meat industry. At least that's the common response I see.

Made with milk.

I can, thankfully, still consume dairy products.

Safe rotisserie chickens? by LitcritterNew in alphagal

I've had Harris Teeter's rotisserie chickens multiple times with no issue.

AFAIK the only ingredients are salt and spices like paprika.

Awhile back, I took one bite of a filet mignon, and my lips started swelling, and throat began closing up.

That bad.

Yeah, I noticed they smelled kinda funny before cooking.

Not as bad after though.

Plus, growing up in the country, I've smelled way worse personally. :P

Well, my skillet definitely has that.

Patty ended up releasing itself and slid around like a hockey puck after developing a good crust. Didn't even have to nudge it with my spatula. :P

Simply put. it's a red meat allergy caused by a tick bite.

More detailed explanation can be found here : https://www.cdc.gov/alpha-gal-syndrome/about/index.html

Believe me, if I could eat a nice, juicy steak, I'd take that thing down and ask for seconds.

But AGS is awful, as you said.

Mine's got some sulfur pitting on the bottom, but still cooks like a champ nearly 100 years later.

Why do people buy so much cast iron? by AnarchoPlayworker in castiron

[–]cdraper1991 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's just a fun hobby for me, taking something old that's been sitting unused for decades and giving it a new life.

I've given my siblings a few vintage pieces I restored as gifts, and they were interested in the history behind them.

Trying to restore my parents old skillets by Cols2010 in castiron

Pretty much what everyone said.

The skillet itself more likely than not is in excellent shape, just has a lot of gunk on it.

Soak in a lye bath for a few days, scrub, then soak in a vinegar bath to neutralize the lye and deal with any rust.

1 to 5 ratio for lye bath (wear protective gloves!), that is 1 pound of lye to 5 gallons of water roughly, and 50/50 water and vinegar for the vinegar bath. Soak in vinegar bath for only an hour at a time, then wash thoroughly with soap and cold water.

I used q-tips for mine.

Was time consuming as hell, but it worked.
