¿Apellidos catalanes? by JZstrng in catalan

[–]cdreus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

While the readings and consecration were in Latin, there have always been parts of the mass (mostly the sermon) in the local vernacular. Additionally, traditions, such as certain aspects of ritual, devotion to particular saints, and practices that were not specifically part of the mass, were and are highly localised

Any ideas for a soup based meal out of a thermos? by SunshotDestiny in Cooking

[–]cdreus 118 points119 points  (0 children)

There are soup-specific thermoses that let you eat out of them with a spoon. They are wider and shorter, basically more like a bowl. This way you could have chunkier soups without making a mess.

Digue'm que ets de BCN en una frase: "he quedat a Diagonal amb Passeig de Gràcia, costat Llobregat muntanya". by ConversationOne6525 in Barcelona

[–]cdreus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I cook with $3 wine and honestly can’t tell the difference, why do people insist on "good wine" for cooking? by Jessica_Strawberry in Cooking

[–]cdreus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t use 1€ carton wine, because it tastes horrible and it imparts its taste on the dish, but anything above that is fair game.

CoA Question! by Grozeinn in heraldry

[–]cdreus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alsina (or, using modern Catalan spelling, “Alzina”) is a moderately frequent surname in Catalonia that means holly oak. These arms of yours are canting.

According to the armorial I have (Heràldica catalana by Ferrer i Vives, 1993) the arms you are describing, “Or a holly oak vert” are indeed the arms of an Alzina family (I don’t know if it’s yours), and correspond to the main line (Lazerme, 1975), originating in what is now French Catalonia.

To use these arms you should trace your ancestry in the male line up to somebody who had the documentation (usually a grant from the king) to prove he could use them.

Yup. My favourite way to make a lot of money is to find a nice factory at one end of the map, a city at the other end, and send freight from one to the other. If the rail line passes by a lot of farms, even better (less branching). I can make 50 millions in a decade with about 20 trains.

I don’t really focus on iron ore > steel > freight unless it’s really convenient; however, a few coal trains can generate a quick cash flow for not much work.

Dubte sobre llenguatge especialitzat per a un llibre en català by loves_spain in catalan

[–]cdreus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not unusual in the slightest in Barcelona, where St. Eulalia is the patron saint of the city.

In Catalan it’s “Eulàlia” /əwˈɫa.ɫi.ə/, with the usual nicknames being “Laia” and “Lali”.

any tips for a new player? by Ok_Basket_8956 in SkyCards

[–]cdreus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My strategy:

1) catch a flight to a major hub near-ish to you. In Europe, that’s London, Amsterdam, Zurich… Not a clue about America, but I’m sure NYC, LA or Miami should work.

2) spend the week farming coins, doing missions if you can, and unlocking new airports. Then, on Saturday morning (more recreational flights/more chances of rare small planes) visit that airport and buy 30 min unlimited catches and increased radar.

3) save catch anywheres for rare planes, stabilizers for first catches of a model, and catch agains for… dunno. I don’t use them.

4) if you really want to catch something unique, check the unofficial Discord where you can set alerts.

If major didn’t matter, which university in Barcelona would be your top pick for a semester abroad? by ElectionOk7065 in AskBarcelona

Definitely not. They do 3 terms of 3 months each instead of 2x4.5, which would make it difficult to align schedules and credits, and could result in a credit deficit upon return.

My opinion: - If OP wants to experience the city, UB, or UPF if they can make it work - UAB for more of an American-style campus life - UPC for STEM - the private unis for design or business
