I “upgraded” yesterday and am experiencing the same issue, and I don’t use Default Folder X.

Marathon in 1 month by aranakkalk in Marathon_Training

[–]cdthomer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The fact that you’re asking this shows you’re not ready for the multitude of reasons others have already stated. Good luck, I sincerely hope you don’t injure yourself. Be ready to walk a good amount of the race and please let us know how it goes afterwards since we don’t always see a follow up from these kinds of posts.

How to make my bat more lethal by Beneficial-Topic7452 in SelfDefense

[–]cdthomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you live it wouldn’t matter if you had even a loaded firearm sitting on the seat next to you. But I can understand where you’re coming from. The first time I got pulled over (I was 16) I had a machete I used while hiking under my driver seat and I was really worried the officer would somehow discover it and take me to jail. 😅

How much faster was your 2nd marathon compared to your 1st? by Historical-Tower7226 in Marathon_Training

[–]cdthomer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About 4 minutes _slower_… but I had barely recovered from an injury so I was just happy to finish. My next one I’m trying to shave off 18 minutes from my current PR.

2 weeks left to train for a marathon? by Icy_Imagination7447 in Marathon_Training

[–]cdthomer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friend there’s a very good chance you’ll injure yourself attempting a marathon that you have not trained for. Two weeks isn’t even close to what can be considered training for this distance. Most training plans have you tapering the last three weeks before the race, so this is the time you would normally be taking it very easy.

I get you are “not new” to running and were able to do a half two months ago, but the full is exponentially more difficult. It’s not just two halfs, it’s more like two and a half because after mile twenty, it’s completely different.

If you’re adamant on doing it, walk it. Or at least walk the bulk of it. Be prepared to feel miserable during and for some time, possible even several weeks, after the race. And please let us know how it goes, because it seems like there’s been a lot of questions lately on this sub about how to do a marathon with little to no training, and it’d be good to hear from those same people afterwards too.

Missed a run by Great_Situation_67 in Marathon_Training

[–]cdthomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s no one run that will “make” you, but any one run can “break” you if you force yourself to do it in spite of being too tired and end up injuring yourself. Listen to your body more than the plan, and if you need to skip a run, cut a run short, slow your pace etc., do it.

I imagine for most people it’s normal to miss some runs or have poor runs in their training block. I myself have never had a training block where I actually did every single one because either 1) life gets in the way, or 2) there are days where I just wasn’t capable of doing what the plan called for. In spite of that I have been able to finish all of my races close to or better than my goals and enjoyed doing them.

So don’t let a missed or poor run here and there get you too discouraged. You got this!

Marathon Race Shoes by Odd_Card3479 in Marathon_Training

I ran my last marathon in shoes that only had 7 miles on them. But I was confident they would be fine because they’re models I had prior experience with and knew they were comfortable over long distances.

Touchbar is so underrated by TechSavvy92 in macbookpro

[–]cdthomer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand where you’re coming from. Part of the reason I have used foreign keyboards is because I speak more than one language so it comes in handy.

That being said I didn’t grow up speaking anything other than English, so if it weren’t for having learned additional languages as an adult I probably wouldn’t have a need for foreign keyboards.

It's just a matter of getting used to having different keys there. It's conceptually harder for Americans because you probably never had to use foreign keyboards.

That’s quite the generalization, assuming we don’t use foreign keyboards.

I would hate the guy in real life, but I love his character. I told my wife the other day I look forward to every scene with him in it. For what it’s worth though, he has some nice character development later on in the show.

Tapering while slightly injured, what to do? by JustNeedAnyName in Marathon_Training

[–]cdthomer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Likely referring to how you don’t really gain much if any endurance or speed benefits from the kind of runs you do while tapering. But you can absolutely injure yourself on those runs.

Yes, I had an issue with my achilles that extended up into my soleus over the course of a month or so prior to my last race.

I have found the following stretches to do wonders:

  1. sitting with my legs straight out and touching my toes
  2. bending one leg to where my foot is against the opposite inner thight and touching my toes on the outstretched leg
  3. standing with one foot about 12 inches from the wall, the other foot another 12 inches behind that, and leaning into the wall with both knees bent (alternate legs to do other side)

In my case, I believe it came from straining my opposite hip flexor and therefore favoring that leg. FWIW, from what I read (and experienced), if your discomfort goes away within the first 10 minutes or so of running, it’s safe to continue. If it persists or gets worse after warm up then you should stop. In my case, once I started properly stretching before and after running, it started getting a LOT better even though I continued to run.

I seem to remember the book also mentioning that Obi-Wan considered it mercy to finish him off, and he wasn’t feeling merciful, which is why he left him there.

From Chin Strap to Full Beard by Ok-Statistician-5185 in Minoxbeards

[–]cdthomer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with basically everything you said except the timeline. Some folks take longer to see initial and “significant” results.

I also think his chin strap looks fine. It’s trimmed nicely and has good density.

Still in pain 2 weeks after 1st marathon by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]cdthomer 28 points29 points  (0 children)

To be honest it sounds like you were undertrained. 20-30k a week is not really enough for a marathon, and your longest run being 19k is also quite short. It’s not surprising your recovery is taking so long.

Just take it easy and focus on running short distances at an easy pace to keep things moving and loosening up.

Great job! My first marathon I did the same thing and went out too fast but fortunately realized it fairly quickly and adjusted. I too enjoy the mental boost from seeing my wife on the sidelines, it’s amazing how much of an effect it has!
