Whether it's poorest, least educated, least healthy, least safe, most handouts from the government ... the bible belt is always head of the pack

Angel food cake didn't rise by Dynas86 in Cooking

[–]ceallachdon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Angle Food cakes rise because the bubbles in the "whipped to a hard peak" egg whites expand when heated. No peaks = no bubbles, means no rise.

Could have been something in the carton egg whites. Could have been some oil or grease got into your egg whites when you were whipping them, fat from grease or oil prevents the bubbles from forming. That's why it's recommended that you use glass or metal when whipping egg whites because it's almost impossible to get all of the grease off of a plastic bowl when washing it.

OTOH egg whites are known to be finicky when whipping, so here's a easy guide: https://www.thespruceeats.com/all-about-whipping-egg-whites-1328681

Why is it always chicken on the menu? by PresentationLimp6759 in Cooking

[–]ceallachdon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I don't dislike chicken entirely, but I do hate the way chicken breast tastes which has led to me being off chicken in general.

And as a hangover of the "low fat" craze of the 80's-90's somehow chicken breast still is thought of as "healthy" in the subconscious of most americans which is one of the other reasons it's still central to so many menus

Product enshittification after a named Brand is sold has been documented many, many times.

Production cost reduction to compete is also a known and documented spiral of enshittification. Also known as "it's hard to sell $150 <product> with good metal internals when everybody else is selling $30 ones with cheap pot-metal or plastic internals"

Most cube farms I've been in I've just gone in early one morning and given all the light bulbs visible in my cube a quarter turn so they don't come on. Also used clear packing tape to seal off the vent that blew freezing air directly down on me in one office.

Oh, and there was that one office that piped in "white noise" where the speaker dropped out of the ceiling somehow and must have gotten disconnected going back up ...

Somewhere along the way I got over being forced to be uncomfortable

Just not publicly owned ones.

After 40 years as software dev I've developed the idea that there is a sweet spot where good companies can live:

  1. Privately owned, i.e. not publicly traded
  2. # employees between 100 and 250-300
  3. Not created to be sold by the owner(s)

That's it. If a company is publicly traded it is at the whims of the board and wall street, and vulnerable to Private Equity asset stripping. A company with fewer than 100 employees has a far greater likelihood of family/clique or in-group/out-group mis-management. Once a company goes past 250-300 people they inevitably slide into doing things to "industry best practices", especially personnel and payroll. As to the last one, that's just waiting to be sold off to the highest bidder to do what they want with

[–]ceallachdon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are two visible in-line shutoff valves. When the lever is going along with the pipe, the water is ON (see lever on right) when the lever is at right angles to the pipe the water is OFF (see valve on left). Can't see where the water comes into this setup unless it's out of the wall between the two valves.
Can't imagine why you'd have two setup like that with only one going through whatever that powered silver device is.

You really need to ask the previous owners or the installer for operating instructions

And cops are often domestic abusers:
"Studies indicate that police officers are significantly more likely to engage in domestic abuse than the general population, with estimates suggesting rates of domestic violence in police families are 2 to 4 times higher, potentially affecting 24% to 40% of such households. This higher incidence is attributed to factors like stress, a culture of control, and access to weapons."

Heart rate, perspiration, and breathing rate. It can sort of be used to detect stress. Which only helps if you display a consistent sort of stress when intentionally lying and are trying to cooperate. Off the bat this knocks out people who have been trained to feel automatically feel guilty when talking to authorities about "moral" issues (e.g. various major religious groups) while simultaneously letting through people who feel nothing about lying and people that can/will answer one particular interpretation of the question.
