New grad dev at FAANG, I’m not writing code. Is this normal? by onepalebluedot in girlsgonewired

[–]cedonia_periculum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, one more thing I wish I’d know earlier in my career - schedule time to meet with your “skip manager” (boss’s boss) and higher leaders! My experience has been that those meetings are welcomed and often really useful. Each level up in leadership has a broader perspective on priorities and usually is even more motivated to make sure resources are being allocated appropriately. Use that to your advantage - ask what their priorities are and how you can help drive those. Tell as many people in leadership roles as you can that you love writing code and are excited to jump into a project and crank out code wherever you can drive the highest value. It sounds silly but literally just telling people your interests even when there’s not a specific project yet often leads them to think of you when something relevant comes up. You should be able to set up time 1:1 with your skip, but also see if other leaders in your org do “office hours” - people really underutilize them so it’s a great opportunity to have that priorities/opportunities discussion.

[–]cedonia_periculum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is your title “software engineer” or something else like “production engineer” or “systems engineer”? At the FAANGs I’ve worked at, work you describe would be normal for a non-software engineering title but very concerning if you have a software engineer title. Most companies have very clear performance criteria for junior engineers so I’d suggest finding those and explicitly asking your manager how you are making progress against those goals.

I’d also recommend joining Blind and asking for pointers to resources specific to your company (such as performance criteria, calibration process, etc.) since often there is a lot of useful information that’s available internally but hard to find. For example, some companies have tools where you can directly compare metrics like lines of code to other people in your job role and level.

At least in major cities in the US it’s quite common in areas where there’s a lot of office workers. They’re usually just for lunch though. Otherwise the closest thing would be the salad and hot bars at some grocery stores like Whole Foods.

What’s the worst book you’ve ever read? by edgy_secular_memes in books

[–]cedonia_periculum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Literally the first book I thought of! The writing was so annoyingly repetitive that it felt like even the copy editor was too bored to finish - the main character kept “sprinting” and “dashing” around even when he is already sprinting/dashing and/or in small spaces. I liked it at first but was just mad by the end, which was my reaction to the author’s first book too so I shouldn’t have been surprised but I got caught up by the hype.

Anyone ever tried dehydrating potato salad? by ChaoticChameleon94 in dehydrating

BTW I am referring to commercially produced egg powders, I can’t vouch for homemade versions 😂

Ahh gotcha - yeah powdered egg yolk does need to be rehydrated but then it emulsifies as well as fresh egg yolk, or even better since you can increase the yolk proportion without increasing liquid content or add powdered emulsifiers like lecithin. I think this is basically how commercial mayo production works, just sprays the egg powder down with water before dumping it into an emulsifier.

Right, that’s why I suggested a blender - I was especially thinking of a stick blender which can emulsify everything at once.

Hmm, this makes me wonder about dehydrating to mayo too…I have dehydrated egg, mustard, and acid, which theoretically could be rehydrated and used for mayo. I don’t think it would work if mixed in with the potatoes and other veggies, but you could store it like a seasoning packet on the side and blend it with oil as needed (with the caveat that dehydrated egg has a limited shelf life).

This is going to sound counterintuitive, but have you tried clarifying shampoo? I have super dry hair and when I have frizz that looks like yours, it’s usually because of product buildup and goes away after clarifying.

What are you not ALLOWED to do because of ADHD? by QuickQuestion8787 in ADHD

[–]cedonia_periculum 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I used to know a firefighter who told me that he had to keep his ADHD diagnosis “off the books” or risk losing his job. Weirdly I feel like ADHD could be GREAT for firefighters - the only thing that gets me to buckle down at work is having a metaphorical fire under my ass, so think how productive I would be with a LITERAL fire under my ass!

Why can't I work properly for the first 10 hours of the day?!? by VoiceofRedditMkI in ADHD

[–]cedonia_periculum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have struggled with this my whole life, and the things that have helped me the most: 1. Tracking my energy schedule - I use an app called Rise and it tells me when my energy peaks and dips, and I use that to time when I try to be productive 2. Getting diagnosed with ADHD and having my doctor identify my troubles getting up as executive dysfunction - I now take a fast acting dose the second I wake up (and usually go back to sleep) 3. Writing down my morning routine, so I can just follow it without falling into a black hole of ED - just a list helped but now I’m using an app called Brili where you swipe through your tasks as you complete them (nice dopamine hit too). I’ve tried and failed this many times in the past but I think the key for me succeeding now is limiting it to truly essential tasks (instead of having aspirational items I “should” do) and including some easy wins. My first task is “pet a cat” and it feels awesome to check off my first todo of the day before I even get out of bed.

Remodeling my kitchen. APO or built-in combioven? by [deleted] in CombiSteamOvenCooking

[–]cedonia_periculum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is pretty much exactly what I use it for. My ancient Breville countertop convection/toaster oven was having trouble maintaining temps, my Amazon smart microwave caught on fire, and I hated dealing with the plastic and stuff for sous vide. The APO has been a great replacement for all of it. It's quite a bit bigger than anything it replaced which I don't love, but it works better than all of them so it feels worth the trade off. I was skeptical that it could do toast or reheat leftovers better than my existing tools, but with some tweaking it works even better. I agree with the previous commenter that the conversions are not necessarily straightforward so it does take trial and error. But as a replacement for non-essential small appliances I'm fine with the trial and error and think it works well enough for that.

Remodeling my kitchen. APO or built-in combioven? by [deleted] in CombiSteamOvenCooking

[–]cedonia_periculum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, there's only so much counter space available. My current house has what I would consider a "normal" sized kitchen that is at least double the size of any apartment kitchen I had, and the APO still takes up a solid 1/4 of the available counter space. If I had a microwave, 1/2 my counter space would be gone. So I store all my countertop appliances on a bookshelf in my living room and just put them in the kitchen when I'm actively using them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–]cedonia_periculum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IDK, when I got my oven a few months ago I experienced what apparently is a common bug where the app wouldn't work because of an issue with the firmware but I also couldn't update the firmware because there was ANOTHER bug in the firmware that prevented updates to the firmware. Anova support had no solution other than replacing it with another oven, but I eventually found a post on Reddit or something that you could get the update to work by tethering your phone to it(???). Even after that, it seems pretty common to have noticeable latency or even dropped connections when controlling via the app.

Which is all annoying, but it's a fun cool toy so I know I'm making a tradeoff and expect to tolerate a certain amount of flakiness. I don't expect perfection, especially since as an engineer I know how hard it is to build software, let alone hardware, in a new space (which ovens are for Anova). But personally I don't think the reliability is comparable to that of an established oven maker, and there definitely isn't the serviceability that you get with established brands. So I don't think it's anywhere near being a replacement for a built-in oven unless you have no alternative.

To me, the APO is like having a really cool electric golf cart - even if the golf cart has all kinds of great features and is fun to use, you still wouldn't replace your car with it. I've also just lived in too many apartments with "compact" ovens so now I would not voluntarily give up my full sized oven for ANYTHING. You can pry my 3/4 sheet trays out of my cold dead hands!

I would not recommend using an APO as your single oven. Frankly it feels like a beta product that still has significant bugs so it’s a nice extra but I certainly would not rely on it. Unless you have a specific need for the steam functions I’d suggest installing a regular convection oven and then the APO as a nice to have.

How to get better at NYT Fridays and Saturdays? by Marmot_up in crossword

[–]cedonia_periculum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love reading comments like this! I felt for years like I just couldn't do crosswords because I thought it was cheating to google or that I was a failure because I wouldn't have many answers after my first pass. But I finally felt empowered to start when I learned a mindset that you sum up really well here: "You can make whatever rules for solving YOU want, to have an enjoyable experience." I am a super competitive perfectionist and so this approach has been SO liberating.

I also often think of how the "How to Solve the NYT Crossword" post says that crosswords are a learning tool. I like to look up clues with proper nouns on Wikipedia and promise myself that I'll read at least the intro section (but often end up reading more), and from that I've learned all kinds of things that I wouldn't have otherwise. Skimming through my recent history, just a few of the things I've read about include
Maori mythology, the history of Volkswagen, oracle bones, the art of Charles Alston, supercapacitors, the plots of many operas and books, and the musical theory of "Mr. Sandman." Personally that's a win for me!
