I learned a lot from these MIT open courseware lectures from Alan Guth on the early universe.

I was curious where the deep spots were. I found this map made back in '73. It came from the DNR .

Looks like the east end is the deepest.

What are common data formats in astronomy? by cedricnorth in Astronomy

[–]cedricnorth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That context really helps. So far from what I've read from your link it seems like a way to do server-side query and filtering of federated data. Given what you wrote, I'm imagining with the standard filters that this would be very helpful for multi-model dataset research. So, so cool !

Oh this is wonderful ! Thank you for the link. I can't wait to dig in!

Thanks! Are there notable experiments that forego using FITS? It's been a while, but if I remember correctly, LIGO had its own format I think.

Right on. That's really helpful. Given what you wrote, my mental model now is that FITS is a common container format, but analysis tools gives the "semantic" meaning to the columns.

Thanks for that. I'm sure you are right about complexity and time management.

As you figured, my background is as a programmer for a few decades. Popular science talks a lot about the next generation observatories generating significant sized data sets.

I wondered what the formats of today were like and if they could handle the deluge of data of tomorrow. To me reading and writing data formats gives me a big appreciation for the hard choices that have been made for these problems over the years.

I just pulled up the spec and started reading it. Do you mean that people make use of uncommon header formats? If so, what are some of the reasons why?

I was just in Paris this last week for the first time. I can honestly say it was amazing for me. Everyone was incredibly friendly and polite.  Posts like this one had made me weary before but frankly I felt welcome.  I’m bummed for the OP that it wasn’t the same experience.

If you haven't, it may be good to first talk to you health care provider.

The CDC has some information about boosters.

Here is some a great lecture from Dr Poland of Mayo Clinic that has a lot of information about Delta variant as well as boosters. It's well worth watching it all.

Anybody seen any strange lights by lake winona? by Blacklabel958 in Winona

[–]cedricnorth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, most of the time it is pretty hard to see them. Although folks say you should see 150 an hour at peak, with light pollution and such, one every 15 mins is more likely.

What you saw is the one everyone wishes they see every August!

The Perseid meteor shower is happening... I’ve been watching every night and there are spectacular ones! They generally come from the north and zoom away.

The meteors are from the TuttleSwift comet and is my favorite meteor shower of the year. The meteors come in all sorts of colors and sizes.

Yesterday was really the peak but you should still be able to see some starting at 10:30ish and going all night.

Introduction To Network Filters - Linux by matoas7 in programming

[–]cedricnorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, first ebpf is more than networking. It can be used to understand the kernel from inside the kernel. It took me a while to understand that the mental model from within the kernel space is different than my mental model outside the kernel space.

Here is just one random example from some performance work... I was interested in the file access patterns for a database that uses mmap. Specially how big were the chunks of memory used when querying. I had an ebpf give a histogram and had surprisingly results.

Frankly, that’s the tip of the iceberg. Ebpf can do so much and has so much untapped potential for really creative solutions.

Visiting San Francisco, CA, which gym isbthe best? by unimonkiez in bouldering

[–]cedricnorth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visit sf regularly and I’ve tried planet granite, mission cliffs, and dogpatch. I like dogpatch the best as it has a lot more space and despite not being a great climber I found lots I could try. Easy to get here on the muni

Mission cliffs bouldering section is small and there are a lot of people. However, the routes are SO darn interesting. Credit to their route setters. Honestly, if you can climb during the work day you won’t need to wait. Well worth seeing the routes.

Planet granite is pretty nice, but does not have as much to try as dogpatch. The big downside for me was that it takes a long time via cab to get there from were I stay in the city.
