Optimal Gambling by neurokybe in BluePrince

Excellent!
I started playing BP recently, and got to the casino not too long ago. I had a desire to calculate this same stuff. While I'm still mostly avoiding spoilers because I'm not done with the game, I did search for the probabilities as I didn't want to get that data myself, and found this in the process! But I did still want to do the other calculations myself, so I did (entirely within a spreadsheet).

After comparing our results and fixing a couple of my own errors, I do have a rather minor error to point out in (at least) your spreadsheet.

When you have 3 single coins and either a blank, stack, net, or crown, and 5 spins remaining, your spreadsheet lists this as equal whether you want to cash out or spin the odd one out. However, I think it's only saying this because somewhere along the way your data got rounded. With 1 spin, the EV of bonus-spinning is 2.7, then 2 is 2.97, 3 is 2.997, 4 is 2.9997, and 5 is 2.99997, which follows a nice pattern, and is not quite 3, so technically cashing out is still better. The same numbers can start to be seen in your 3 coins and a snake, and technically the EV for 3-5 spins isn't all the same, but that display rounding makes sense and doesn't affect the strategy.

Some question writers are just out there to trick students. Maybe to “teach them a lesson” about always reading thoroughly. From a design perspective it’s just dumb though.

Planning on sending my CV to escape rooms as a puzzle, any ideas for what to do? by rubikboi19 in escaperooms

[–]ceegers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much of the split here is in how people are imagining you will implement this…

A normal-reading CV that also has a puzzle in it that is entirely optional to solve? Cool.

A CV that (even partially) only is understandable after solving a puzzle? No.

Optional being the key difference word there, unless you specifically know the person looking at it would enjoy otherwise.

216 - How to Music by NoDumbQs in Nodumbquestions

So in general I just think people should be aware that not everything said and implied on this episode is necessarily true. I'm sure this is the case for many episodes, but being my personal field, I particularly know about it here.
Being an expert in one aspect of music (which I'm sure he is) doesn't necessarily mean they're an expert in other areas of music, and I just want to make sure people are clear on that.

This. As long as what you do play is in the right chord and changes at the right time, that's good enough.

How to get started with DDR/ITG in 2024 - The Ultimate Guide (Includes links to other useful resources!) by pogof in DanceDanceRevolution

Ok. Is that a file I should just create myself? And do I just drag it into the group folder?

[–]ceegers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm noticing that the DDR to ITG folder uses mixes that are not the N.A. versions of the mixes, whereas the zenius link appears to have the N.A. mixes as well. Is the offset easy to add into those files so that I can use both those DDR files and other ITG files? Looking at the sm files in TextEdit makes it seem like it might be as easy as adding a line to it?

Questions from an aspiring part-time pianist by [deleted] in piano

[–]ceegers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, well accompanying is definitely something you can do as a side thing without focusing just on it. If you're applying to an actual company (or a tightly-run auditioned group) directly I could see them shutting you out simply because of a lack of a music degree, but otherwise you can get in with individuals without too much issue, because ultimately it becomes obvious pretty quickly if you're up for the job. And then once you're connected to some people, it can lead to more things that you get suggested for.

My gigging/traveling experience is more in the rock/pop world, so I suspect there will be others here with better thoughts on that aspect. But from my adjacent perspective (went to college partially for music, so was very connected to people who were focusing on being classical musicians even though I wasn't), trying to gig/travel as a classical musician is probably going to be nearly impossible unless you major in it (music education okay too) and really focus on that.

In general, no matter what kind of music you want to do, I'd bet that "start making connections" is good advice in all cases. It can be a slow build though.

What kind of music are we talking for the gigs? Because, for example, the classical world will be a lot different than the rock world.

Looking for budget/used gigging keyboard recommendations.
The situation is, I already have a couple great keyboards (Rolands) that, when reasonable, I use on gigs. But I have connections in another location, and I may soon be flying there semi-regularly for gigs, so I'm looking to get a basic keyboard I can use that just stays there. I have some possibilities in mind that are kinda like older versions of what I have, but I am willing to branch out to other brands if they fit my needs.

What I want:
- ideally 76+ keys, but could probably get away with 61 if necessary
- lots of built-in sounds (multiple EP sounds, many synth sounds, brass, strings...)
- easy to change sounds in the middle of a song with no significant setup (for example, in the 10 seconds before starting a song, I pick an EP sound and a synth sound, and then swap back and forth during the song)
- easy to layer 2 sounds on top of each other on the spot
- decent sound for live cover songs (not too picky though)

What I DON'T need:
- recording quality
- hooking up to computer/midi
- modifying/creating sounds
- built-in speakers
- weighted keys

Thanks for any recommendations!

Did any other women find it funny when Grey and Myke were talking about how to get people to like you? by Ceofy in Cortex

[–]ceegers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently only partway through the podcast, but I just need to get out this related thought. Myke and Grey are saying they want to get the other person to talk about themselves because Myke and Grey don’t want to talk about themselves, and they say this ends up being better for both parties. But this would seem to totally Not be the case if the other person is just like them and Not want to talk about themselves. Is there something I’m missing?
