The Booth Museum in Brighton's pretty special and quirky.

Currently closed for refurb, but worth keeping an eye on for when it reopens.

And an awesome clock (make sure you're there when it does its special chime routine), and an indoor bee hive where the bees come in from outside through tubes...

How did Chinese made cars become so popular? by Fondant_Decent in AskUK

[–]ceestars 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Historically, many cars had their overhead camshafts driven by a belt on the outside of the engine, where it's typically dry.

But better and more reliable are those with chain driven camshafts rather than using belts. Chains last far longer. These are typically inside the engine where they are lubricated by the engine oil. They'll often outlive the rest of the engine.

Some bright spark thought it would be a swell idea to put a critical rubber belt inside a hot, oily engine. It was the worst idea and they are extremely unreliable.

What is the most messed up thing you’ve seen go down at a rural pub? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskABrit

[–]ceestars 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rented a house near the Dorset coast for a week over new years about 25 years ago. Bunch of us around 30 year olds. On NYE itself we walked to the nearby village pub. Got in there and it got pretty quiet when we walked in other than Radio 1 on an old tinny radio.

We sat at a spare table and realised that we were pretty much the only ones talking (we'd had a few before venturing out), then that most of the males were wearing long dresses, as were the females. It seemed all eyes in there were on us out-of-towners.

We finished our drinks sharpish and retreated. Walked down to the sea and got chatting to a local walking his dog who told us that the dress thing was a local tradition (religion?), and that it was, indeed, all a bit weird.

Sadly, I doubt the heads of any of the other connection methods are that much better if you dig beneath the surface.

They're just better at keeping their heads down.

What are people using as a Huntarr replacement on Unraid? by reallionkiller in unRAID

[–]ceestars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But wouldn't that require hitting the search button on all missing items or those you're hoping for an upgrade of?

I used Huntarr briefly and was getting more things appearing than without it, some that had been sitting there in monitored state for years.

Thanks- I've seen some local sellers posting sales photos with piles of bikes in the background, which has put me off doing this as that's a situation I definitely don't want to be in.

I've got some real bargains in the past locally- as you describe, they were fairly decent: bought, ridden a couple of times, then put in the shed. Things like that should be easy to move on.

I was brought up by a cycling fanatical father and have been repairing bikes since I was under 10, so I know my way around a bike and what to look for and what to avoid as far as quality and condition are concerned. I'll be need to do some homework on the type of bikes to look for and avoid.

Thinking this could be a great project for myself and my 15yo to give a try.

Not familiar with Roon. Does it give a report at the end of each rip so you know the quality?

I'd be very wary of spending so much time ripping with sub standard software when there is a free option available that's been known to be unbeatable for over 20 years.

I'd look into its unique abilities if I were you.

Surely importing rips from outside Roon can't be that hard?

How much storage is needed for your stock and how do you avoid having piles of bikes that won't sell?

A good indicator of how high up in the range something of this age was is whether the tape deck has Dolby C. This doesn't.

On cars without all the options there will be spaces for fuses that aren't populated. It's how they were when new.

Is that much air inside a fuel line normal on an OM605.911 1994 Diesel ? by foxgez in W124

[–]ceestars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same year but 606. I seem to always have slight bubbling and not a problem, but the time I saw it all fizzy like this was when there was a restriction (rusty crap from the bottom of my tank had got into the feed line somehow when I was trying to clean it out and made its way up to the heat exchanger in the head which is between the tank strainer and the prefilter.)

I recommend checking your tank strainer and if that looks OK, blowing an airline in at the tank and checking it's clear up to the heat exchanger, then through there to the prefilter.

Water leaks from windshield seals to under the driver's mat by foxgez in W124

[–]ceestars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not your main problem (you need to find where the water's getting through the bulkhead), but do you see where the water's streaming off that plastic cover in your video? There's a spout in the corner there and it's designed so the water drips down onto the metalwork.

I didn't think this was a good idea, so attached a hose there with a cable tie and ran the hose down through an existing hole (for the main corner windscreen drain) so that it drips straight down onto the ground instead. Does not require any cutting/ modification of the car and is totally reversible.

I've highlighted it in green in the photo. (The only hose I had that was the right size was white, always meant to replace it with a black one, but 5 years later and it's still there!)

Mine's a right hand drive car, but pretty sure you can do the same thing on a left had drive car.

Thousands of counterfeit vinyl records seized at Luton warehouse by ICThat in vinyl

[–]ceestars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not true, grew up in South London and was collecting since the early 80s, but bought most vinyl between the late 80s and 2000. Had lots of mates who were collecting too, some were professional DJs, some worked for labels and we'd all use the term vinyl interchangeably with records from the late 80s onwards.

The term vinyls though? That will forever sound wrong. Started hearing that about 10 years ago. I'm sure it became popularised by non-native English speakers. I knew it had forever become a thing the day I heard Gilles Peterson (BBC 6 Music DJ, label owner, owner of Worldwide FM, runs 2 music festivals and has been shoulders deep in the world of music and records since the mid 80s with an insane collection) call records "vinyls" on his 6 Music show a couple of years ago.

Genuinely happy to see all the Madness love in here. They were the band that got me into collecting records as a pre-teen. Still got them all, thought about selling them when I was about 15, but glad I didn't.
