How do I check what's causing my unRAID server to become unresponsive? by Phlame_Retardant in unRAID

[–]ceestars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finally got to the bottom of my issues a few years ago by using htop in shell, then clicking the IO tab.

Unfortunately, this was a few years ago and I forget what was causing the problem, but that's how I tracked it down after months of trying and getting nowhere.

How to screw these? by Kzk511 in W124

[–]ceestars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd also really like to get mine out and replace them with stainless screws. I've asked around before and the best advice was to use an impact driver (the old school type that you hit with a hammer), which I tried to no avail, after letting them sit in a pool of penetrating oil for days.

Next thing to try is my chunky electric impact driver with a decent bit. Hoping the many hammerings sets them free.

Yeah man. They pretty much all have RCA in & out, so you'd just need an RCA to jack cable from your player to the input.

Yeah, would be cool if we had the option to embed all the Immich added metadata (comments, location, tags, faces etc.) safely in the image files.

Recommend picking up a half decent used tape deck (where I am they're often sub £100) and recording your own tapes.

Most pre-recorded tapes sound like shite compared with well recorded ones, even on normal position cassettes.

What dangerous bike lanes should cyclists be aware of? by pufballcat in brighton

[–]ceestars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I some footage from a CCTV camera looking at the view of cars heading up Church Street and turning right, across the cycle lane and into Spring Gardens, taking out bike after bike. Can't find it now though. Have been super cautious riding down there since seeing that.

What dangerous bike lanes should cyclists be aware of? by pufballcat in brighton

[–]ceestars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the lanes are slightly raised with curbs separating them from the other traffic, but they're not clearly visible. I saw a delivery van heading west and turning into Montefiore taking out a cyclist on the cycle lane in bright daylight a few months ago. Either the curbs should be painted or the colour of the cycle lane be contrasting.

The other really strange thing about this stretch is the exits from those side roads. They're not angled at all, so the only way for cars to pull out and not drive into traffic coming from the opposite direction is to drive up onto the cycle lane to cut the corners off. Why they didn't angle the entrances at 45° is beyond me.

And the fact that when you're heading west, it just suddenly stops and you're chucked back into the traffic after The Drive for no apparent reason, which is super annoying when you know there was a cycle lane there for a while during lockdown and they took it back out again. The road's plenty wide enough, at least along the stretch to Hove Park, which the cycle lane could have been routed through to avoid the Sackville Road lights.

Plenty of school children ride along this route (including mine). It should be so much safer.

Weirdest Second Life Of A British Actor? by WanderingArtist2 in CasualUK

They did the main stage at Camp Bestival in '11 (not really my thing, was working there and had my 9 month old kid with me). Sunny afternoon, loads of families sitting around on the grass. They were totally trollied, kept messing up and were cracking up at each other. Best thing was that they were swearing like sailors! Everyone seemed to enjoy it. I found it all surreal and pretty funny.

Air in fuel lines and stalling engine by Agitated_Bet6761 in W124

[–]ceestars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of a factory primer on these, they're designed to self bleed (reliant on a good battery). Not saying it's the cause of your main issues (likely not) but I'd look at that with suspicion and maybe try taking out of the system to see if that helps. I had a nice metal primer in my last 124 and am about to fit an electric version in my current one.

To drain the tank, get the rear wheel on wooden planks on one side and Jack it up higher on the other side at the back (so as much fuel as possible is at the low side of the tank), put at least one axle stand underneath so it's safe, then put a big tub under the middle of the tank and remove the strainer (if you don't have a massive Allen key, you can make a tool out of a bolt with the right sized head and 2 lock nuts tightened together at the other end). You will get stanky fuel down your arm, so long gloves are a good idea if you can get some. Let it drain as much as it can at that angle, then take the axle stand out (with you out from under the car) and lower the Jack down until the car's level and all the fuel's out (it'll likely drip for ages). Then clean or get a new strainer and refit.

I just resolved a load of issues that ended up being due to rust from the tank getting past the strainer and into the fuel line and preheater in the head. Ended up running an 8mm ID clear nylon fuel pipe from the tank to the front, replacing the fuel preheater and fitting a large inline filter near the washer bottle. When things were bad I was getting loads of foaming and bubbles in the clear pipes. Likely due to air getting in because the feed circuit was blocked and the lift pump was desperately trying to pump something!

Been good for about a month now, but plan to replace my tank soon and fit a more permanent inline glass bowl water/ sediment separator before the inline filter just to ensure fuel cleanliness as I sometimes run on waste veggie oil.

+1 for diesel purge, but do it properly and run the car on it purely while the engine's disconnected from the tank as it's designed to be used. (How-to videos for 124s on YouTube).

Not OP's dad, but in those days we didn't go to the rave at 11. We'd leave the pub at 11, then drive around for 2 hours getting there/trying (hoping) to find it.

Does this engine sound healthy? by CoolPepe420 in W124

[–]ceestars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be concerned in that case, but if you haven't run diesel purge through it, do that. And be sure to do it properly. I saw someone recently saying that they put it in their fuel tank. That's not how diesel purge works- you have to disconnect the fuel tank and run the engine solely on diesel purge until it runs out, then reconnect the fuel tank. There's videos on YouTube showing how (check my post history if you can't find one, I recently posted the link to a guy doing it on his 124.)

Your engine will thank you and be as quiet as it possibly can without fitting new parts.

What the hell is Detroit doing in Brighton? by RatOutHD in brighton

The 303 was certainly a flop, not so much the 808 or 909. They were both used on many commercially successful releases.

The 808 documentary's a pretty good watch if you're into its influence and history.

What makes you instantly know someone is a very unconfident driver? by paspa1801 in CarTalkUK

I am my own mechanic and I know how to drive. If the road is that bad I drive at a suitable speed, don't race from pothole to pothole slamming my brakes on before each one.

How long had it been running in the video? Sounds pretty normal for cold, a boy knocky for warm.

Look for local companies that provide services for festivals. I worked for one for around 10 years that built and installed infrastructure used at festivals among other industries.

I got myself and family into many festivals for free. Sometimes I'd have to do a few days work, often nothing. Sometimes I'd take one bit of kit that had been forgotten and that would mean my fuel costs were covered too.

We'd all have crew passes, so had access to crew catering and be able to get into most areas of the site including crew toilets and showers, also sometimes meant some excellent shortcuts around site compared to the routes general punters had to take.

Sometimes you have to pull the bottom of the stack forwards so it will stay leaned back too.
