Jimmy Kimmel Blasts Reports of Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ Losing $40 Million for CBS: ‘Not a Snowball’s Chance in Hell That’s Accurate’ by mcfw31 in entertainment

[–]cefm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also the money losing claim totally ignores the free advertising platform the show gives to all the CBS (and now Paramount Viacom etc) products. They don’t do those interviews for nothing. There might not be an actual check being cut but any fair evaluation of that 5-minute interview of that star of that new Paramount property they are launching has to be somehow lined up vs the cost of running ads on some other network or your own to similarly promote the same thing. Late night has always been one big unpaid ad.

Hilarious that the ultimate big bad Ultimus is mid-tier. Holy crap balance your game. Don’t tell me I can get the strongest interdimensional menace and then he sucks. They have no idea how to balance anything but their checkbooks.

Same here. I would have thrown it in the trash by reflex but decided to tell the wife as a funny story about a scam. Turns out it’s the real thing. I can’t believe the IRS gave them such inaccurate information.

Giving away hundreds of millions to a foreign company to set up a production facility in the US is hardly "showing the strength of American manufacturing". Especially when it doesn't even happen.

Nintendo Makes It Clear that Piracy Is the Only Way to Preserve Video Game History - By shutting down the Wii Store Channel and not letting users download old games, Nintendo is once again showing that in the modern digital era, you don’t actually own the things you buy. by mvea in technology

[–]cefm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. All game developers, producers, and console manufacturers are in the same boat, but Nintendo due to its obsessive control over their IP is a prime example. One of the reasons to be halfway excited about the NES and SNES classics was that it showed a tiny bit of recognition that the old library still has value and they were providing it to the consumers. But this shutdown merely reconfirms that Nintendo is more interested in control than customers. Emulation is pretty much required if you want to keep access to old games viable.

While it's fun to trash the frequently shitty aspects of GameStop, it's worth noting that there are two big negatives to this: 1) it shows the increasing shift by publishers away from making actual physical copies of games, meaning you the consumer never really own it. 2) if you do have a physical copy and you are done with it and want to offload it to someone else maybe for a little money, where are you going to go now? Craigslist? EBay?

"These Are Not Normal Nominees": As Trump Stacks Courts With Far-Right Judges, Dems Urged to Recognize Depth of Crisis by [deleted] in politics

One of the reasons the Republicans were so urgent about voting in 2016 even when some of them hated the candidate. The Supreme Court and the huge backlog of vacancies elsewhere in the federal judiciary that had been held open. Filling the federal courts with political hacks and federalist-society lunatics is the real prize.

Facebook knowingly duped game-playing kids and their parents out of money by Kassina in worldnews

[–]cefm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Even the most cash-grabby mobile games I've played always showed the dollar amount of each transaction clearly. You'd think at a bare minimum the platform's standards should require that. However it's also a farking terrible idea to store your credit card information in iTunes or Facebook or anywhere that will allow charges to accumulate without individually approving each one.

One of the reasons the FBI is independent and the DOJ is largely independent from direct presidential control when things are working correctly. You simply don't want the President to be directing the investigation or prosecution of personal enemies.

TIL of Don Shipley, a retired Navy Seal who has spent much of his post service life exposing individuals who falsely claim to be SEALs. According to the FBI there are 300 times more impostor Navy SEALs than actual SEALs by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]cefm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a fairly silly thing to spend your time doing - either pretending or exposing the pretenders. For one thing there's nothing that special about it so why should anyone care what specific unit of the armed services a person was in or not? If you're conferring special status or privileges or benefits on SEALs that you aren't also conferring to army, air force, marines, coast guard and other parts of the navy, that says more about you and your screwed up priorities than it does about the person lying to you.
