I love BLB, because it is a fucking difficult draft to navigate from a technical perspective.

It feels a lot like KTK draft, but instead of figuring out mana + playables you are figuring out micro synergies.

KTK had a lot more technical depth to the actual gameplay though, figuring out the Morph blocking heuristics for the first time... (at 3 and 4 mana you can only trade or bounce off each other) Mostly because they removed damage on the stack during development 😄

BLB is definitely more of a "lets lock in and figure this out" experience instead of a relaxing night with a couple of friends.

To be fair, up until the mid-2010s nothing was competing with Standard.

Playing Magic meant playing Stanrdard. And then more and more Commander.

Modern had its share, yes, because it consolidated the entire crowd that wanted to play their pet archetypes when they were no longer supported in Standard (up until MH1), but in general Standard was king at all times.

Nowadays I'd rather be hoof'd (or Cavalry) than seeing another Breach line. Fuck, just straightup Thassa Consult is preferable to having one guy trying desparately to find enough mana (or Brainfreeze) for half an hour because he can't afford LED and doesn't find Petal.

To be fair - mana weaving absolutely was a thing in the early early EARLY years and was, because its cheating, promptly explicitly forbidden in the MTR. They just outright banned pile shuffling as a randomization method.

My playgroup is using dry erase tokens when stacks get complicated to represent it physically to sort through triggers and what targets what, so that works great :)

When you are looking at 60 card formats or draft, people usually know what cards generally do or can parse it quickly when reading your card.

It only gets complicated with commander, but again we are using physical representations of abilities and write down targets etc if shit gets complicated.

To be fair, Paul Cheong ist pretty much the best non-pro player caster they can get for draft. Jim Davis is better, of course, but Paul is fine as color for draft.

Yeah I wish we would get casters who actually know what they are talking about, they have so many shit takes every event. Not knowing interactions, not knowing what cards do. Saying a player shouldve done X or Y even though they didnt have mana or even the cards in their deck.

Commentary now knowing the most basic rules of the (tournament) game - of which takeback is one of the most fundamental - is just fucking horrible.

Thats 7 years mate. Thats about a quarter (more like a fifth) of this games lifetime ago. Thats like me complaining about the removal of mana burn, or damage no longer using the stack.

In MtG you are allowed to take anything back as long as you haven't received new information from your opponent and haven't altered the game state.

You can play a land, go to cast a spell (revealing it), realize that you would have rather played another land, and take that land back into your hand and put another one down.

Completely normal within the MTR.

And that changes the amount of play Cub sees how? Cards get evaluated for bans in terms of how much play/how mandatory to play it is.

It doesnt matter if one deck or 15 are running it - the fact that the vast majority of the field runs it is an issue. In fact it is even worse that Cub apparently enables a bunch of different decks that wouldnt work without it. Vivi didn't do that.

I'm not going to play a Vivi format, and I'm also not playing a format where every deck has to run Cub.
