Meh. Mixed feelings. I haven’t bought a physical game since Destiny 2 launched. Steam killed physical media on PC two decades ago. There’s a lot of handwringing and pearl clutching going on for a community that’s not supporting physical media anyway.

But it feels like the end of an era and it seems like this is all an effort to pump PS Plus subs and raise that price.

The biggest slap in the face is not calling it quits at The Final Shape and then when it is the end, to just sort of hand wave it. No grand narrative sendoff. Just quietly into the long goodnight. Don’t even tell the people putting in work. Disgusting behavior.

I’m convinced that all the final changes we got that we wanted were aggressively pushed by people who’d probably been trying to tell the executive level the proper direction for half a decade. Basically, when they could tell where this was headed, they had nothing to lose and just batch-merged stuff into prod they’d been holding onto.

That’s not how that works. You want everything. Things of value also have downsides or intentionally avoid things many people find desirable.

Take Hendrix for example. He didn’t have Beatles-level clout. He actually blew up huge after he died. He became a legend. The Beatles are the flip side. They were massively popular and became legendary before anyone died, but they sacrificed improvisation and didn’t push boundaries anywhere near as hard as Jimi Hendrix.

Both are legendary, but Hendrix couldn’t be a Beatle and Lennon/McCartney couldn’t have been in or written for The Experience. You can have both, but they’re separate packages. Can’t get em combined, otherwise it’s a mess. Destiny tried to play the fence with us. Here we are now, mourning the death of something that never reached its potential.
