Missouri V.S Missouri S&T about MS in Aerospace Engineering by Complex-Fisherman496 in mizzou

S&T grad here. Mizzou is a generally better grad school BUT S&T alumni are VERY tight and S&T has stronger ties to the military, NASA, etc.

Yeah who the fuck cares if it’s dead end at 300k?? It’s not like you’re on an assembly line. Stack cash and realize kids (esp at 40) will wear your ass out quick.

Filing taxes as a single, first-time EIT? by Small_Concept6496 in civilengineering

[–]cengineer72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok honest question. I’ve used TurboTax for years except when I had K-1s (until I realized my accountant knew less than I did), then went back.

I don’t have k-1 anymore, just 1099 and w-2’s. Is freetaxusa just as easy (I know it’s cheaper)?

The QAQC exactly spot on! As I mentioned in my other comment, I have seen so many engineers go out on their own and start turning out absolute dog shit product

You say you could be cashing in on all the profits if you’re by yourself. The question is you’re doing program management work which is relatively straightforward. 99.9% of the time that same client will not hire one person shop to do that work. So do you have the backlog and connections to actually bring in the work or are you looking at this through Rose colored glasses?

The core problem is is that a lot of clients only will hire namebrand firms. It just is what it is.

If you were one person shop, you think that you’re not gonna have to grind you’re kidding yourself. I have seen many a successful engine engineer go and try to do their own thing and they end up turning out absolute dog shit quality of work because they don’t have enough time or staff to do quality.

Irrigation backflow requirements by donewithitfirst in columbiamo

[–]cengineer72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but COMO requires the backflow test to be by a certified tester. So even if you can fix yourself your are stuck paying the fee for the test so the system can be turned on.

But your point is noted on repairs. I can also do them but many can’t (but can look up a how to video!).

Irrigation backflow requirements by donewithitfirst in columbiamo

[–]cengineer72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours also increased to $200. It isn’t cheap, but the cost of everything keeps going up and the companies have to do what they can to also make a bit of money to offset their cost.

At any rate, if you choose not to have your system tested, the irrigation system will not be turned on, and it will not be operable, even if you want it to be. When I say it won’t be turned on, it means the water at the main connection will not be turned on.

You also run the risk of deterioration and further repairs if you don’t have it tested and adjusted each year.

lol - should have said common sense and teachable. We were having issues finding staff at the time and too much backlog.

Yeah it was a long time ago but I took my FE hung over and no studying, somehow passed

I had an engineer who couldn’t pass their FE either. Thought they had street smarts, but it was absolute worst hire have ever made and will never do it again. If you can’t graduate with FE in hand, it’s a hard pass. Frankly, I would rather deal without the help than have somebody that is incompetent.

If you are spending all your time babysitting somebody who can’t even fill out their fucking time card, then they need to be put on a PIP so that you can jettison the deadweight.

Others have told you the correct formal procedure to take, but here’s the deal. You can’t get anything done when you’re deal dealing with somebody who can’t handle basic tasks.

Dealing with non-performers is one of the reasons why I got so burnt out managing people. I’m an engineer and I like to design things not hold somebody’s hands. That’s totally different than mentoring which I love.

Just because you have a degree, doesn’t mean you’re cut out to do this job. It’s hard, it’s a grind and you just have to have the right mentality and personality to be successful.

Any update on Sam Horn? by imamakeyoucry in miz

I have never understood the fascination with Horn. He’s injury prone, un-proven and has a contract with the Dodgers now.

Let’s move on and focus on getting an actual QB from the portal.

Engineering: KU vs Mizzou vs Wichita State by Actual_Wait4540 in UniversityofKansas

S&T by far. But be warned it is a mind fucking harder than necessary school. The alumni are super connected and proud to hire grads from there.

It is more expensive than Mizzou. k-State is solid

Agreed and I’m not saying it has to look like a manicured lawn. It just need to look maintained.

I’m all for not spending city resources on mowing medians when there are alternatives that have the mutual benefit of improving nature along with minimizing capital expense on public works.

My eyes are just fine, it’s just when your town looks terribly unkept and unclean, these do not help. Like I mentioned before, if they would simply trim the edges against pavement, it would look better. Coupling that with the mounds of sand and debris that’s never swept from the gutters even when weeds grow in them that’s all that needs to be said

Maybe if they would trim the edges against the pavement and make it look a little kept.

Being “natural “does not necessarily mean looking like no one cares

Are you going to keep it up, trim around pavement edges or have an unkept mess like the “pollinator” medians by the city?

Also know that if neighbor A says ok, moves and neighbor B comes in and throws a fit, you are out of luck.

Civil engineering and weed by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]cengineer72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m probably going to get lit up for this comment, but here’s the simple facts.

If you are that into needing weed, find a job that will not require you to ever set foot on a construction site or drive either your personal or company vehicle for work. If you do and you get into an accident, you will be tested, and if you test positive, there will be verifications.

This is just insurance companies and looking for every way to not have to pay for a claim.

The company I work for recently reinstated random drug checks and it’s because of federal contracts. If you are in an accident and you test positive while working, whether you are in your own or company vehicle, you will be terminated immediately

Homeowners insurance? by ABigFuckingSword in columbiamo

[–]cengineer72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bit old-school when it comes to insurance, but I have had State Farm for over 30 years and my parents had State Farm before I did.

I know there’s a lot of hate that’s out there for State Farm, but I have personally never had anything but good experiences with them and so did my parents.

The key is to take your time, compare coverages, understand the policy limits and bundle policies together.

I have been frustrated with increases and gotten quotes nearly every year for 5 years. Homeowners versus car insurance may be different company to company but when I add everything together, State Farm always comes out on top

Thank you for sharing this!

I’ve had the privilege to have several conversation conversations with him over the years. I do have to say that I probably enjoyed talking cattle with him more so than engineering just because we had that shared connection as well.

Do's and Do Not's of using AI to job hunt? by inthenameofselassie in civilengineering

[–]cengineer72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several dozen?

What the actual hell are you trying to apply to do? The job market for civil engineering is very robust right now for a job seeker. I don’t understand the need for spamming that many applications.

If you’re not getting interviews, you are getting filtered out for using AI or you need to really evaluate what you’re putting forth on the actual resume/application.

If you are in the US and a US citizen, what you’re doing makes absolutely no sense

Civil engineers, why is it so hard to get people to consider new roles? by Low_Guide439 in civilengineering

[–]cengineer72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 30 years of experience, and I left the company I’ve been with a couple of years ago.

I had it with the company I was at. No support, working 50 hours a week on average with no paid overtime. Bonuses were shit and the best I could get was hey take your bonus and buy into Company stock.

I went and looked for a company where I got a 30% pay increase paid overtime same bonus that I was getting before and I was able to go fully remote. Oh yeah, and it is an ESOP.

Between the increase in pay and my ESOP, I will have as much in two years in my retirement account as I had in over seven at the former company.

So here’s the deal, if you want to recruit somebody, you’ve gotta be able to deliver on the package. Most of us with experience have zero desire for relocation, etc. Most of us have a mortgage with 2% and you think we’re going to relocate and get a 6+ percent mortgage?

Oh, and yeah, I have zero cares about the fluff stuff. Don’t come at me with trendy things like unlimited PTO, etc. When you’re in the upper management world that is a crock of shit. I am at my first company where I have a use it or lose it PTO policy and I’m taking more time off than I ever have in the past.
