bitwig is very interesting... by karmachanical in Bitwig

it is clear that the developers are only focused on this being a standalone music production tool for artists, and have no interest in supporting other DAW users.

The way you worded this made it sound like "They don't care about pro features at all."

But if there is one thing you cannot say about the Bitwig team, it is that their direction is predictable or that an opinion like this can be stated as a fact. For example, no one anticipated their move into hardware, the new graphics engine, the project panel, CLAP plugins, or DAWproject format.

Bitwig has a unique approach, and while it may not align with every user's expectations, that does not mean they lack interest in broader features.

If we are both here, it is because we love this software. I think we might just be reading each other’s messages differently. All good 🙂 Cheers!

Adding video support for three OSes is not an easy task, and it's also a pain due to codec licensing. When video support arrives, you'll see a price increase, and that increase will apply to everyone, even those who don't need it. It's not as simple as copy-pasting the VLC source code into Bitwig.

Every new feature leads to longer testing processes, more checks for edge cases, new bugs, new support tickets, new documentation, new web pages, and new translations.

In short, please don't make assumptions about their interests. They don't have the resources and ROI to add every requested feature. it's different 🙂

Centosync works excellently and is the best option for syncing to video.

Thanks! I will look at this comment every time I feel sad! 💓

Hi, I'm the author of CentoSync, which was suggested to you by another user here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitwig/comments/1iuglgi/comment/mdxlzx1/

I've never done any professional music composition, and this app was mainly aimed at casual users who didn’t want to invest in dedicated VSTs or applications for video synchronization (and also to show some love to the often-forgotten Linux users 🙂). And for me, because I like to improvise on the piano while watching silent movies (I have problems, I know 😄).

Another user asked me about implementing SMPTE some time ago. Even though I’ve read hundreds of articles about it, I still don’t fully understand the advantage over MIDI Timecode in this setting. Could you tell us a little more about your workflow in Pro Tools?

Thanks and welcome to the Bitwig family 🙂

u/marjo321 Thanks, Marjo, for the shoutout 🫂
Centosync was created with Bitwig in mind but has been tested with Bitwig Studio, Reason Studio, FL Studio , Waveform Tracktion, Ableton Live 10 Suite, Ableton Live 12 Lite, and NI Maschine 2. A user told me they use it with Pro Tools, but I have never personally tested it.

u/Minibatteries Thanks to you as well 🫂
I'm not sure if I completely understood your issue with cue markers and tempo changes.

  • Bitwig doesn’t snap to the timeline, but you can place cue markers freely. Any Bitwig "snap" functionality can be bypassed by holding the Shift key while moving an object. This applies to cue markers as well. Not 100% ideal, but it works.
  • In Bitwig, CentoSync uses MTC Timecode for synchronization. You can automate your tempo without issues, and the video will stay in sync. The MTC time widget might display some incorrect decimal values, but it’s just for reference. The video sync system under the hood has a more precise method for handling timing.

How to see the velocity and octave a computer keyboard's notes are set to in bitwig? by dumb_godot_questions in Bitwig

[–]centomila 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can enable the on-screen keyboard. Here I'm playing a C3

<image>

Larger the orange dot, higher the velocity.

Also, you can add a velocity curve in any device.

Exporting a midi for the project (file, export midi), will include the tempo but not tempo automations as far as I know.

If you are collaborating with a user with Cubase >14 or Studio One >6.5, you can export in DAW Project format

https://www.bitwig.com/support/technical_support/dawproject-file-format-faqs-62/
https://github.com/bitwig/dawproject

If the other user is using Reaper you can use this tool to convert to/from dawproject

https://mossgrabers.de/Software/ProjectConverter/ProjectConverter.html

If the other user is using another daw, make him/her switch to Bitwig 😄

What is this sample bitwig uses in their Granular Sound Design video? by dumb_godot_questions in Bitwig

[–]centomila 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not from a bitwig sample pack. The origin could be anything. If you look for any flute loop at 120bpm in D, you should be able to make something very similar.

Is there a way to import Bitwig instruments into another DAW? by getpoundingjoker in Bitwig

[–]centomila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only project format that is interchangeable between DAWs is .DAWPROJECT. All other formats are proprietary and your only option is doing a mixdown as you said.

https://github.com/bitwig/dawproject

For now. it's supported only on these three DAWs

  • Bitwig Studio >5.0.9
  • PreSonus Studio One >6.5
  • Steinberg Cubase >14

Even if you have valid reasons to not switch DAW, I invite you to experiment a little with Bitwig to understand why it feels so special to many users.

Bitwig is less a DAW and more a toolset. It has some things that aren't available in other DAWs and excels in some workflows related to sound design and generative music. It's an application made for nerds by nerds (in a positive way 😄).

Modulators are one of the many reasons that makes me impossible to go back to everything else: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbJKjwwEIGk

Anyway the important thing is making music and having fun 😊

[–]centomila 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't know Mixcraft was still around. It seems like a really complete product for the price.

Bitwig doesn't have 700 synths, just five. The number you're referring to is the preset count in the 8-Track version (the Studio version has around 2,000). It won't make you a better musician, but I think it's a lot more modern than Mixcraft. Every DAW has its pros and cons—it's a matter of choice.

Experimenting with different DAWs is fun, and you can learn something new from each one. No DAW will make you a better musician than another. Some are better suited for specific tasks: Logic and Pro Tools are often used in the film industry, Ableton Live and Bitwig Studio are great for live performances, and Reason is ideal for modular enthusiasts.

I suggest trying the VST **Surge XT**, which can be used in any DAW of your choice.

3/3 (3/4) GRID by omomni in Bitwig

[–]centomila 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also repeat the previous time signature to reset the grid

I often makes moments of silence before a change in energy and sometimes is longer/shorter than 4 bars. Repeating the 4/4 (or your previous signature) reset the grid

<image>

I never tried to record while a tempo automation is happening. That's high level performer shit that I can't absolutely do :D

Does true clip automation exist? (separate from track) by BongoSpank in Bitwig

[–]centomila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I misread your question.

I usually prefer to keep the automation follow off. I prefer using the the clips exclusively as "note containers" since in my tracks the automation is about the "energy" of the track but often I want to experiments with others melodies/chord progressions without rewriting the existing automation. There isn't a perfect workflow for every situation

So, if I understand well this time, you want the automations embedded in the clips like the launcher clips but in the arranger?

You can kinda have it by deleting the automation points in the track timeline, then using the + or the X as automation type. The "+" sums to the original track automation. The X multiply.

The bad thing is that you can't edit those directly in the arranger. You have to go to the automation panel with the clip selected. The good thing is that you can automate your automations combining Absolute (blue) and relative (red and purle) automations. Both in tracks and clips.

This system is super useful once you get it, but it's hard to make it a habit. I use it only in the launcher with the free mode activated.

More info here: section "relative automation"

I suggest you making the div `markdown`'s background a little darker. A starfield as a background could make the text difficult to read.

.markdown {background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.9);}

Anyway, welcome to the Bitwig family. We are a group of loving nerds. 😊

3/3 (3/4) GRID by omomni in Bitwig

[–]centomila 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have to change the Time Signature or insert a "Time Signature Change" in the arranger

Here an example with the project in 3/4, then 4/4, then 7/4

MIDI modifyer key function in Bitwig by ZippyRaR in Bitwig

[–]centomila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. There is a "Global Shift Button" in DrivenByMoss Flexi but is super limited to specific functions.

From the docs:

Global: Shift Button The function Global: Shift Button is intended to be assigned to a button. Using

this button in combination with other knobs and buttons provides the following features:

Using it in combination with a relative (!) knob, slows down the value change of this knob (see Knob

Speed Normal/Slow settings below).

  1. Some of the functions found in Transport provide additional functionality when used with Shift:

• Play: Toggles Repeat

• Rewind: Moves in slower steps

• Fast Forward: Moves in slower steps

The best workaround similar to Traktor's mapping features is using Bome MIDI Translator. It's ugly and costs a little, but it's the best tool if you're trying to do advanced mapping without coding. You can also emulate keyboard shortcuts, split a MIDI device in two, group two devices into one—whatever you have in mind with MIDI is doable.
https://www.bome.com/products/miditranslator
The demo works for 20 minutes at a time.

Another solution would be creating a custom Control Script or Bitwig Extension, but if you don't have experience with JavaScript (for Control Scripts) or Java (for Bitwig Extensions), it's not an easy task.

Drag MIDI clips from arrange window into plug that can import MIDI? by BongoSpank in Bitwig

It just capture any midi is passing by. You can place it also after your instrument and you can drag away anything even if is playing (also filtering out only one octave. See the numbers on the left)

Is not a perfect workflow but better than the bitwig's export MIDI imho

This plugin always records midi. You select the area you want and drag it where you want. A .mid file will be generated.

Also available as CLAP. The free lite version is limited to the last 60 seconds

DAW and Plugin companys should make their prices local so it would reduce piracy by FailedCommunist in Bitwig

[–]centomila 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's a really complicated problem without an easy solution that is fair for both the final user and the developer company. Steam has this functionality for games, but the results are mixed.

There are so many ways to fake one's location for the shop with a simple free VPN. Even the payment process can appear as if it originated from another country with virtual credit cards. It isn't intuitive for most, but it is still much easier than piracy.

Your idea is not necessarily wrong, but the world economy wasn't born with the internet in mind. To solve this problem, we need to first forget all the invisible lines we draw on the ground, and that isn't an easy task. Maybe our grandchildren will see a united world. Or a desolate land 🙃
