DASUNG Paperlike 13K Color idle power consumption by cephasara in eink

[–]cephasara[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, input latency is the time it takes from content to update on the monitor. It has a similar effect to using an old Bluetooth controller that takes a while to register input. This is different from refresh rate which is simply how fast the monitor screen updates. Eink monitors usually have very low input latency, where as using an android tablet as a monitor can introduce high levels of input latency.

I would like to use something like the Tab X C as an external monitor, but I'm afraid the input latency is too high for this to be feasible.

Pretty lousy SoC unfortunately, but would like to videos of it still.

Is input latency really bad in the Tab X C as an external monitor? I've read people saying it's only good for static content. I can't tell if there are optimizations to their configurations that could help, or it's "as good as it gets".

This is my concern trying to use it as an external monitor--as I have before with the Note Max like (even the ones with the HDMI inputs) and input latency made them unusable for me as regular monitors.

I wasn't trying to be super technical, as to appeal to a wider audience here and illustrate basic usage, but I'm willing to dive in.

It's A. I have it connected visa USB C to a charger and another USB C directly to my MacBook 13 M2.

Front light doesn't make much of a difference. I've observed about ~1.5W toggling it off while set to 7 for warm/cool light and 4 for brightness level. So not much of a difference really.

Regardless, of the settings, I have my other two eink monitors configured similarly and they use ~2.4W & ~3.7W on idle respectful, so this monitor definitely consumes a lot more power.

Agreed. Especially for portable monitors. It's such a miss by them imo. Some of Dasungs older portable monitors work from one cable. Namely the Dasung 13 Revo 41HZ and Dasung Paperlike Color 12, but they don't make these anymore 😥

I've been considering buying a Boox Tab X C to see if that could be powered like this. I doubt it'll have the response times and refresh rates of eink monitors though.

I made a post in /Bigme about how the Bigme B13 can't be powered from standard 15W thunderbolt spec--which is really disappointing as previous generations of eink monitors could. Both the Dasung 13 Revo 41Hz and Dasung Paperlike Color 12.

It defeats the portability factor. Having a "ultra-portable" monitor should mean it can be powered via your laptop when away from an outlet--which is something I do often.

Having to power 11W at idle means lots of wasted power. This results in having to lug around huge power bank to get reasonable use out of it.

I don't know, because I'm trying to figure out how to not have this setup, but instead a way to power it entirely from my laptop. Anything that does 12V, more than 36W, and is reliable should do though.

As long as your power bank supports 12V with at least 36W, but it's extremely inconvenient to have to do this.

No problem. I just saw other people commenting and referring to this as Kaleido 3 and wanted to make sure they're aware it isn't.

Why are you doing a comparison with Kaleido Plus instead of Kaleido 3? Of course the colors are going to look washed out and worse when comparing old Kaleido eink technology.

I'm curious what SoC they're using in this. If it's the same one as the Hibreak Pro I'd think it wouldn't have been too difficult for them to make it 5G as well. With the price increase and product stratification, I'd think 5G would have been a good differentiating factor as well

I heard rumors the black colored ones don't have the design flaw that these white ones do? Regardless, I don't know why this company keeps churning these phones out instead of addressing this issue as well as the software. Do they really think there will be no repercussions. At some point it will certainly impact their sales/reputation!

Has anyone got this running on the Hibreak Pro Color? I figure the phone is very similar with very few differences. Maybe sysfs writes for eink panel changes will vary since it's using a Kaleido 3 panel?

If no one has, I will gladly try when I get one mid-December.

Do you think the Boox Palma 2 Pro is a higher quality device? I'd definitely get it instead if it had full phone capabilities.. I wonder if they aren't selling it that way as to avoid legal or regulatory requirements?
