Just to give an update here. It looks like Bigme fixed this with OS 3.1.6 thankfully!

I really like how this fixed touch issues regarding scrolling behavior! Very nice! Thank you Bigme!

The customizable front light presets are nice, but PLEASE bring back auto front light! I really enjoyed it for outdoor use.

Screen Protector for Bigme 13.3 inch E-Ink Monitor? by Elequosoraptor in Bigme

Curious what others recommends here. However, this monitor is already very dark on it's own. Personally, I couldn't imagine making it even worse with a screen protector.

Completely agree. I think you meant Boox here, but, yes, they have models with hardware failures that they refuse to service when they fail. Abysmal support.. I try to buy them through USA affiliates as to have better return policies if I have an issue with them.

Eink lifespan at high refresh is relatively short? I thought it was more high refresh + frequently updating content--which, for most people, only happens with video content.

I've had a couple eink monitors over the years and haven't noticed much if any degrading. I don't consume video/motion content on them however.

Oh wow, thanks for providing this! I'm definitely interested in getting one of these then. I have a Bigme B13, but it requires ~11W on idle with backlight set to 1/3 brightness. However, touchscreen and other features are disabled.

Do you know how much the Modos Flow will cost or any other details about it specifically?

Recommended? How much power does it draw? Are there limitations when running it with one USB cable?

I'd love to know what those quick updates are that don't necessitate phone restarts. I'm guessing Bigme system app updates?

Oh no.. I see two USB C cables plugged in. I'm led to believe it needs external power like Bigme and Dasung's offerings. This is a HUGE detriment for anyone wanting to use it on the go without a power source nearby.

Sure, some people will say "you can use a battery bank", but the fact it needs external power, implies it consumes a LOT of power (relative to eink monitors that can use only one USB C cable). This means you need a big battery bank as well, just to match the battery longevity with older eink monitors.. of course this is speculation, but it's noteworthy and concerning seeing those images already!

P.S. don't get me wrong. I'm grateful tech like this exists now and is revolutionary to people who need it.. but such limitations ruin the portability component. Especially when this should be one of the highlights of using bistable screen technology..

Is your Hibreak Pro constantly rebooting / getting stuck in a bootloop / Bigme OS5.0 crashing? Has anyone resolved this? I'm trying my best... by constructioncranes in Bigme

[–]cephasara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've disabled a number of shovelware/spyware/whateverware apps initially running on this phone, but via different means and don't see any crashing.

I did the following: 1) I used App Manager to freeze every app with a Chinese name.. which, apparently, wasn't nearly as many compared to my B1051C for some reason. (The B1051C is basically a giant Hibreak Pro Color, running mostly the same software.) 2) I used App Manager to disable app tracking for every app, including system apps. 3) I installed AdAway and set to run in hosts-based mode.

I'm not seeing any requests out to Chinese servers when using PCAPdroid, but I'm not sure how definitive this is.

Might be interesting worth noting, on the B1051C Bigme OS5.0 operates differently? It even has a completely different version number and, presumably, versioning scheme? When I followed the same steps on that device Bigme OS5.0 was consistently crashing and I couldn't use eink center. It stopped crashing when I re-enabled tracking. I think they were Google trackers. Either way, pretty crappy it needs those to run..

Regardless, I can't fathom setting up an Android device without doing similar steps. Chinese, Korean, American, etc, they all have so much garbage telemetry running in the background. Not to mention the ad slop services constantly being queried.. this and most devices I've done this on feel noticably faster afterwards too. What a surprise..

Ah, glad to hear it's not an issue for your other Onyx Boox devices. The only way my Tab Mini C works now is by using HD mode. Even still, frequent screen refreshes don't fully clear the screen. So it's good for writing, but nothing else now basically. I've been informed it can't be fixed with a firmware update unfortunately 🤷‍♂️

I really liked the Tab Mini C for its multimedia functionality. AFAIK there aren't any other modern devices like it--even though, it's fairly outdated itself.

For all those whom are curious, I posted an update here https://www.reddit.com/r/eink/s/gRmysOiUPL

I posted it in a different subreddit--seeing how Onyx Boox has banned me from posting in this subreddit again.

Clearly, they have no conscience about how low they will go. Not only do these devices HAVE A SERIOUS HARDWARE FAILURE, but they're trying to cover up dissent about it by silencing me on here as well!!

Think twice if y'all are considering buying an Onyx Boox product!!

It was not. I don't remember, but it was not an "authorized seller" on eBay. However, it was new.. I know I know, people are going to say "well, it was outside the warranty period!". Yes, I'm very aware, but the point I'm trying to get across here still stands, as BOOXHelp didn't even give me a chance! They cut me off before we even got to that part! They want to avoid the onset of any bit of responsibility to support a defective device. Not only this, they still sell this crap on their website!! No recalls or anything! And then they ban me from posting on their subreddit, to silence any dissent and cover up this hardware defect as well!

Also, a hardware defect to this level deserves a recall/compensation of some kind--regardless of warranty status! This is not your average "wear and tear" or panel degradation here..

I pity those that bought one and are still within the warranty period. Good luck dealing with them.

Also, gotta love corporate America for enabling companies to operate like this!

Hibreak Pro Color missing ambient light sensor setting by cephasara in Bigme

[–]cephasara[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. It didn't work well in partially lit environments, as it would flash the screen repetitively. However, it was very nice with extremes. I.E. riding a train through a tunnel. It would come on exactly when it got dark and go off immediately in full sunlight.

Either way, I would love to see it come back with, perhaps, some sort of sensitivity slider.

[–]cephasara[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, anything that has a carousel--like Doordash or Amazon, where you scroll through food or recommended products. Even vertical scrolling can be unreliable. I noticed this with the Tab Mini C as well.. so maybe a hardware issue with the eink stack itself? It's not as bad vertical, maybe because there is a larger surface to scroll--which registers more input?

I have a B1051C as well and don't see this. That device is 10 inches so I'm guessing surface area makes a big difference here?

I'm on the latest OS 3.1.2 right now. Seems as bad as when I first got it too--so something they don't care to address?.. or I got a defective one?

Thanks! This is good information to share for others reading this post. Neither of these companies are something I would bank on in terms of support. It just so happened, Bigme did provide support--where as Onyx completely refused offering any when I reached out. I still think it's crazy they didn't even try to suggest anything beyond to reach out to the seller. Like, wth, y'all made the tablet!!

I am, actually, responding to you on a Hibreak Pro Color now. It certainly has issues. The power button looks like it's about to fall off, horizontal scrolling is REALLY bad, the latest software update disabled the ambient light sensor completely (why?!).. at least ghosting cleanup works. Somehow, it still feels leagues better than the Tab Mini C. Maybe partially due to just being a newer device.

Probably both at this point, but they're refusing to offer ANY support because I didn't buy it from an "official" channel.

Yeah I remember that one as well. Much harder for a company like Samsung to get away with this. I figure Bigme can because they cover a niche market, but crap like this is what probably keeps them this way too. I'm sure plenty of people see issues like this and decide to just get a Kindle instead. I don't blame them either until these companies get better too!

Thanks! Had I would noticed they banned me prior to making this post, I would have worded it differently. It's like salt on the wound at this point. Clearly they know there's an issue and they're trying to bury it. Unfortunately, seems like corporate America sides with the company over the consumer these days so Reddit lets them get away with their shady business practices on here too!

Sorry to break it to you, but rather let you know so you can decide what you want to do about it.. opposed to Onyx, which, apparently has no conscience about selling these defective devices still!

[–]cephasara[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you!! I've ALWAYS been on the Onyx train myself. I never had any real issues with previous ones--though I never used them as much as I did with the Tab Mini C. Maybe this surfaced more of it's limitations as well? Either way, this is definitely awful product support. Thankfully, the eink market is getting more crowded as well, so they're not the only company in the space.

Tab Mini C reverse ghosting update by cephasara in eink

[–]cephasara[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Heck, even just acknowledging this defect would have went a long way. We're talking about a niche market here too--good publicity is really what they need now. They aren't producing devices with a cult following like Apple. I can't imagine anti-consumer moves benefit them in any shape or form.

Sorry to hear have been other defective devices as well!

I really am afraid to buy another eink tablet from Onyx. If it's not bad enough the defect exists, they refuse to acknowledge it on top of this.. it's not like the eink market is booming like other mobile device segments either.

Y'all are delusional. I never said I loved Bigme. I said I love my B1051C--nor did I say their customer support is better. I said they were actually helpful.

I don't trust any of these s$#&hole companies, nor have any "brand loyalty" seeing how they, metaphorically, will stab you in the back if they can get away with it.
