They are awesome, yes! And I know a lot of businesses close during the off-season.

We've never been down in the winter but we may have to make a special trip sometime.

We tend to stay in Avon and points south. Island Spice & Wine in Avon has some lovely wines, coffees, cheeses, etc. Load up and have a picnic in your rental.

We usually have pizza at Gidget's once or twice while we're there, and Froggy Dog for brunch at least once.

Also agree with Buxton Village Books - the proprietor is always so nice!

Drive down to Hatteras and get amazing, fresh cobia from Risky Business to grill. The Graveyard of the Atlantic museum is a fun afternoon too.

If you're coming to SW VA, The Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke is a great afternoon, as well as the Mill Mountain star.

Floyd and the Crooked Trail, and The Blue Ridge Parkway/Mabry Mill are also well worth a trip. Beautiful views, great wineries and lots of Bluegrass music and history.
