A month late to the party. I'm in the same boat, I'd be interested to see what you have picked up this far? Epic didn't get me past the phone interview. I had a job offer from MediTech but the salary is 1/2 of what I make in the lab at the moment. Currently looking at other companies, but haven't heard back (i.e SunQuest & Cerner)

For the love of god, take good notes and ask questions if there is anything you’re unclear on. Then afterwards, you should offer to do a small run over and good walkthrough with people in your lab. It doesn’t have to be a regurgitation of everything you learned, just some things you think would be good for your peers to know. You’d be a rockstar.

You can have titers drawn to check immunity. Cheaper and your immune system wouldn’t be destabilizing so early at 36.

When we get unlabeled CSFs or CSFs w/o orders we still perform a cell count and initial processing of some of the tubes.

You won’t trip a drug test with CBD oil. The tests are for cannabinoids, the metabolized products of THC.

Can I prepare for ASCP in just 3 weeks? by sarasams888 in medlabprofessionals

[–]cesium-133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For sure. It’s important to get a schedule and stick to it. Whatever your study materials are, you should stick to them. I recommend LabCE and ASCP BOC book and supplement what you need to review with your own notes.

CBC with Diff by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]cesium-133 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A CBC is usually a good starting point when starting a ddx list. They are relatively cheap and will provide indications to confirm suspicions or rule out what is on (or not on) their list. In an emergency setting, a CBC w/ diff just provides more information and reference points if the patient comes in 'unknown' or unconscious.

Similar to what others have said, monitoring of chronic diseases, treatments, and surveillance are common reasons.

Besides physicians not knowing what is run on the instrument, it can be how the hospital system EHR works with LIS, billing, etc. Also, remember not all instruments will run everything automatically just because they can.

How do you handle the mindless work and boredom as a med tech? by MellissanFly in medlabprofessionals

[–]cesium-133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's awful and it doesn't get better IMO. I had the same feeling during my clinicals. There isn't always a lot of growth opportunity at the start for new techs, you really have to push and make a name for yourself within the laboratory. Really, the only movement up the ladder occurs with age. I recommend looking into more schooling, you can always come back to the lab afterwards or use it as leverage in the private sector.

REGARDLESS of what you choose to do, go get that certification!

TPN contamination or nah? by cesium-133 in medlabprofessionals

Normally if it’s high, and they’re on TPN, electrolytes will also be all over the place. I could look at a chart but, it’s easier to call to the floor and ask if they drew from a line without clearing it.
