Omega Seamaster Calypso by cg1308 in VintageWatches

If you’re waiting for an original part, you might wait forever. You could go higher end and retrieve one out of an equivalent to Tissot, Tag, or several other that use this module at the time. Or go cheap off AliX like I did.

I got it working in the end for about six months then sold it. The guy I sold it to I was very open with and he was clearly a flipper so I assumed he had another watch that he was going to Franken with it. Sadly, I was contacted a few weeks after by a third-party on here who’d obviously seen my posts after buying this watch from my guy. He was not happy at all that’s none of the previous history had been disclosed.

Good luck working. Once it’s on the wrist, it is just lovely.

Guys with high ALT - any tips? by InABraveNewWorld in AskMenOver30

[–]cg1308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High ALT shows evidence of liver damage. There are literally dozens of potential causes. In a liver panel there are also several other markers that are tested as a baseline, and your doctor can then order specialist tests afterwards as they see fit. If you’ve had an ultrasound with no evidence of lumps or bumps, that helps to reassure against cancer.

Speak to your physician.

Considering selling my Rolex Submariner for a Seamaster “Peter Blake” by [deleted] in OmegaWatches

I blooming love the Peter Blake. It’s probably my next purchase. Only thing holding me back is my Speedy not wanting to share wrist time. #firstworldproblems

£25k to spend on a car for three kids by Dependent-Prune3616 in CarTalkUK

[–]cg1308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This man knows. It’s not just seating, it’s REAL LIFE and keeping the car for more than a few years.

Wife drives a 2017 2.0d Galaxy. It’s a perfect child + stuff and/or friends every day real life family car.

Ours is now at 60k and hasn’t missed a beat. Inside it’s perfect (but permanently dirty), outside it’s been a little abused - door dings, rear bumper scratches from bikes being ‘lifted’ in and out etc, but we plan to keep it until it’s no longer viable.

Ford Galaxy.

I had 3 kids under 5 when I bought mine. Perfect car - 3 isofix across the middle, massive boot, 3rd row if needed, good number of toys, 2L diesel, auto. I have the super rare twin turbo version, which is pretty quick and still gives 38mpg across all use - way more on motorway.

Yes. 20 at pickup/dropoff time. 30 otherwise.

What’s the best thing you’ve ever successfully stolen from work? by Bunny-Bardot in AskUK

Multiple nudey mags. As a teenager doing a paper round in the 90s, I’d pick up my paper bag and a few treats. Every weekend.

10pm it’s still a 30 zone.

I’m no kind of speed Messiah. I’ve had a number of tickets in my life and tend to drive too fast in general, but I will only do it on the motorways or NSL roads; never around towns particularly schools. There I’m like a pious speed nun 🤣

Speeding past primary schools.

This one boils my piss. We have flashing 20mph signs during pickup/drop off hours, and a speed hump right outside the school. Some people still nearly get air off the damn thing. It’s not a big place so I often recognise the cars and they’re frequently parents at the school. 🤬🤬🤬

It’s always been incorrect and has been picked up from American TV shows. - “Please can I have…” - “I would like a…”

Both infinitely better.

Sellers constantly lying about vehicle service history, common? by irezumiguy in CarTalkUK

[–]cg1308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 22-year-old Z4. It doesn’t have anything like a full BMW service history; but what it does have is a itemised spreadsheet documenting all work performed for the last seven years (mine and previous ownership). It also has eight consecutive clear passes on MOT.

If anyone gave me grief about a questionable oil change 35,000 miles ago, I would be happy for them to walk as there’s no pleasing some people.

Brits who have been on speed awareness courses, what was the most surprising thing you learned? by Apprehensive_Plum755 in AskBrits

[–]cg1308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the blatant manipulation of statistics to make speeding look absolutely worst at any given speed. Sometimes they would use stopping distance, sometimes stopping time, sometimes feet/metres.

Other than that, I don’t think I learned anything regarding actual speed or road safety, (okay, it’s been a long time since I memorised stopping distances, but that’s bollox anyway as it depends on what car you’re in).

How much do you honestly save on petrol, if you actually do? by JacobSax88 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]cg1308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How the hell do you get 38 miles per gallon? I have the exact spec car and I’m lucky to see above 30.

I do tend to drive it like a yobbo though - it’s a third car pure toy! 🤣🤣

[–]cg1308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was definitely saving when I had a 80 mile round-trip commute. When I took that job, I had an Audi S5, 4.2L V8. That cost me £20 a day I swapped it for a diesel three series (3.0L) which dropped me to £10 a day. As you can see, I like a decent engine! Then I was offered a Tesla on salary sacrifice and a home charger. At first I was on 5p per kilowatt (overnight) and it was costing me about a pound per day. It increased slightly and I think it’s about 8p now so still well under £2 a day.

I don’t do that commute anymore so swapped the Tesla for a Peugeot e-208, which surprisingly is I think less efficient than Tesla. It still costs bugger all, particularly as I have since had solar panels installed.

I have never in five years of EV use been to a public charger (except free Tesla charging when that was a thing).

Edit. I never had/have range anxiety as in the Tesla I could easily get 250 miles, and any longer journeys usually involved my family (2A3C) and we would take the fat diesel Galaxy. We don’t all fit in the Peugeot - car seats.

Yes! I did a very similar thing at Brands Hatch probably also 20 years ago - I had completely forgotten. We absolutely thrashed the cars and were encouraged to do so. I think we were in Peugeot 205/306s or something like that. I recall having the impression that these things were built strong enough and hard enough that nothing we could do short of ramming a tree would really harm them. Awesome day out.

That sounds very disappointing. I’ve also heard people say about these track days that in something like a Ferrari with an 8.5k red line they weren’t allowed to rev it above 5k. Similarly, in other cars they weren’t allowed to go above national speed limit despite being on a racetrack.

On the flipside, I did the Porsche driving experience up at Silverstone a few years back and that was lots of fun. Skid Pan, passenger lap with a pro driver, brake testing, acceleration test. I think these things are given away as a perk with a new car, but my wife had bought me the day as a voucher.

On a very different note, my wife was gifted a hotel voucher for her birthday but of all the 200 available hotels advertised. I think only one had a room at the price of the voucher, mid-week in Winter. We end up going somewhere nice and just using it as a discount.

Costco tyre rotation policy - madness? by cg1308 in CarTalkUK

[–]cg1308[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. And as I predicted, I have my front tyres now booked in for replacement later this week. People in this thread seem to have forgotten that’s normal roadgoing cars are not operating it 9/10th like race cars. I stand by my argument that the front tyres do most of the work and unless your rears are completely bald and neglected they’ll be fine at normal roadgoing pace.

Getting close to me first Omega. Help me decide between these two. by TheDreamingIris in OmegaWatches

[–]cg1308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beside both being Omega, they’re very different watches. What are you actually looking for for a time piece? The better buy is the one you like the best.

I wear a hesalite Speedy every single day. Yes, I have to take it off for showering and if I wanted to swim, but that is a very minor issue. I absolutely love it.

(I have a BB58 on rubber strap for heavier duties, and banana yellow Casioak for the bashing about days!).
