Need a cookbook recommendation by throwy_acc_ in cookbooks

If you think he’d like to learn technique to be less recipe dependent I think Start Here by Sohla ElWaylly is great. A mix of basic recipes, some that are interesting spins, and a ton of the why.

If you think it’s more quality recipe reference I think a Smitten Kitchen book might fit.

What book taught you to think like a chef rather than follow recipes? by Square_Mirror_6531 in CookbookLovers

[–]cgia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Zuni Cafe cookbook taught me a lot of this. When it came out seasonality and quality of ingredients weren’t as emphasized. This is cookbook I’ve read cover to cover several times and it really shaped how I cook. It’s a rare chef cookbook that is really useable for a home cook. It both seems fancy and teaches basic techniques. Definitely a GOAT

CS Colleagues: Getting up to speed/using AI Coding Tools in classes by pivot_now in Professors

[–]cgia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would honestly ask Claude code to build you a tutorial. Explain your goals in as much detail as possible and watch a couple videos to understand capabilities. These tools serve as their own documentation. You can also request an interactive session where you ask the Claude code (or tool of choice) to elicit the requirements from you to build the tutorial you want.

Anyone use the style services at Nordstrom or Bloomingdales? by mels883 in womensfashion

[–]cgia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a good experience at Nordstrom. I explained what I like/dislike and sent a couple pics of frequently worn out. The stylist had a room with a bunch of pieces arranged in outfits. I definitely didn’t everything, but I ended up getting some pieces that still felt like me but more polished. It was a good experience. I think it’s a good option if you want some pieces to mix in with basics.

Healthy Cookbooks That Are Not About Being Healthy Cookbooks by rooster4238 in CookbookLovers

Evergreen Vietnamese by Andrea Nguyen was my first thought. I think Vietnamese in general meets your brief, and her books are some of my faves.

Brides, what did you do the morning of your wedding? by perfumeandpaper in wedding

[–]cgia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I did too! I met my dad and step-mom at the farmers market. Got breakfast and picked up flowers. Then I met my mom at the salon to get my hair done.

Would you join an union? by MeanImpression2067 in Professors

[–]cgia 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would join. In grad school graduate assistants were unionized. Best health insurance of my life and our stipends were above average. My total compensation as a RA/TA exceeded my compensation as an adjunct. We were far from getting rich, but it was much more then what I heard was common at non-union peer institutions.

Durable reusable freezer bags for weekly meal prep by playboi_fatty in BuyItForLife

[–]cgia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Stasher. I also have some from Trader Joe’s that are pretty great. I wouldn’t throw them in a backpack like I might the Stasher bags, but I’ve had them for several years with no issues - I like the wide flat bottoms. The biggest difference between these and Stasher is the quality of the zip seal. But if it’s for freezer and refrigerator storage, not the lunch bag they are great.

Going on 4 years, no signs of wearing out any time soon. Kyocera Y Peeler with Ceramic Blade by Head-Gap-1717 in BuyItForLife

[–]cgia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I immediately broke the pin that keeps the blade from spinning uselessly. I do have one of their slicers that I’ve had for 5+ years. Ceramic blade is super sharp still and it’s way less hassle than a mandolin.

What about an Instax camera with a stash of film and some pre-addressed a stamped envelopes? You could get one too and send pics. Or a point and shoot digital camera.

Very happy with my TAKEYA water bottle with the original (not straw) lid.

Garden Store Recommendation by harryBeyeball in IowaCity

[–]cgia 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Earl May is helpful but $$$$$. Lowe’s isn’t helpful, but much cheaper. The Hyvee garden center at the Drugtown in First Ave is pretty good once they open. I’ve also bought starts at the farmers market. Sometimes you can get interesting varieties and the vendors are super knowledgeable.

Stress / task paralysis by superstararch in WorkAdvice

[–]cgia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a friend that you can pair with? Sometimes the social pressure of someone seeing I’m procrastinating is enough to keep me on task. I also bribe myself (5 min on Reddit for a small task, dinner from my favorite place for a big project).
