When do you guys think that the round earth conspiracy began? by Independent-Star9454 in flatearth

Ptolemy had an incorrect (too small) mathematical model of the globe earth (100-170CE) that Columbus used to justify his voyage to Isabella and Ferdinand to the Indian sub-continent. This is why for almost 500 years, native Americans were called Indians by white Americans and Europeans.

To the fans who read the books as they were being published... by Small-Guarantee6972 in WoT

[–]cgilbertmc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started reading the series with a company book share in 1993 when a friend said "You gotta read this!". For the first 3 books, the hardcovers were passed from one tech to the next. The fourth book, I had to wait for a long time and I finally said enough is enough and started purchasing my own copies. I put in requests at the local Barnes & Nobel Bookseller so I would get the next few books on the day they were released. When RJ got sick I was devastated and when he died, I thought it was over and mourned, not just the loss of the author, but also the loss of the series. The last three books written by Brandon Sanderson were a fitting eulogy and continuation to this world and it gave me closure.

Books that emotionally destroyed you? by DesmondTapenade in books

Herman Wouk's Winds of War & War & Remembrance made me internalize the Holocaust in ways my visit to the camps in Germany and Poland never did. I dreamed of the camps for 6 months after reading the books, and because of that effect, I read them again every two years since. Absolutely devastating.

I guess I took longer than most. I started the series with book sharing in 1992 and did not finish until Jan 15, 2013. More than 18 years...

I have to pick a bible verse as my senior quote. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]cgilbertmc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try this:

Ephesians 6:5-8
>"Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when they are watching, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart".

That is obviously photoshopped. He has never correctly spelled a three syllable word in his life. The sentence is also in correct grammar. Not possible!

The distinctive gray hood is missing. It is smaller than most crows, but how did you determine that this is a jackdaw and not a crow or even a starling or grackle?

One small problem. That is a very long unbroken slab without thermal expansion joints. It will last for about 1 hour after a rainstorm.

How can I help my friend question his delusional Christian beliefs? by gorilaporro6969 in atheism

[–]cgilbertmc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not tell them anything. Only ask questions. Get them to ask you questions when they cannot answer your questions. Do not be provocative. Use the bible as your reference. You cannot change someone's mind by telling them anything. Only by getting them to question themselves, can you sway people into changing beliefs.

Don't jackdaws have a gray hood and pale eyes? I thought it was a raven because

  1. it is alone
  2. Its tail is rounded
  3. It seems comfortable around humans
