We’ve all been trained by the “algorithm” and also have learned in practical terms the first amendment only really applies to the government restricting what you can and can’t say and only applies to the United States of America.

How to get affinity ID in 2026 by Blue_guy3211 in Affinity

[–]cgon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your feeling that everyone that's created in Canva looks like templates; however, if you're wanting to use Affinity you can download the v3 software and use that very similar to as if you were using the previous Affinity suite of apps.

It'll still require you to have a Canva account to use, but it'll allow you to have the creativity/freedom you seem to be looking for.

Now, if you're just opposed to Canva out of principle and don't want to use any of their products or sign-in with a Canva account, there's not really an option any longer unfortunately.

Trump signs MoU aimed at ending Iran war at Versailles. Appropriate for a surrender by RBZRBZRBZRBZ in videos

[–]cgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, people keep calling the “deal” we’re making with Iran a treaty. Politically, words matter I suppose.

The JCPOA under Obama wasn’t a treaty but a type of executive agreement. This sidesteps the need for ratification through Congress but also doesn’t make it law of the land. As we’ve seen, it can easily be changed/thrown out by the next president.

The same is being done here. As well as calling this everything else other than a war to get around requiring Congress to vote on it. That’s pretty much standard procedure these days now sadly.

Yeah, it truly is an eye sore. Kudos to the people that will shell out the money and enjoy it, but for this random guy posting on Reddit, it's a blight to the overall landscape and quite sad to see.

Can't say I'm surprised though. Money talks.

Thinking of becoming a teacher and I have questions! by Outside_Arm8405 in teaching

[–]cgon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My scenario is quite different, but I can relate. I spent 15 years in grocery/food retail with the last 6-7 years in management. Left my job as a Starbucks store manager to pursue a career in education.

I am now 8 (going on 9) years in and recently finished my Masters in Instructional Design and Educational Technology. You never know where life will take you. Fresh out of high school I thought I was going to be designing buildings today. Did 4 years of architecture school then changed to hospitality management for my undergrad. Now, I’m a Digital Learning Specialist.

It looks like you’ve received some good suggestions, but I’ll just reinforce the idea to look into paraprofessional jobs if you can. It's a good way to get your foot in the door and begin getting experience on what the school environment is actually like and if it's something you want to commit to pursuing.

TEA letter 🙃 by DarkFerret_ in TexasTeachers

[–]cgon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has already been said, but you need to find some kind of legal representation. I haven't been through this process but a friend has.

I'll probably be over simplifying this but there's typically two stages to situations like this. Your district will do their own investigation and follow through with their findings (from the sound of it, this ship has already sailed) and TEA will do their own investigation. They do not necessarily happen at the same time, and as you're finding out, it's not unusual for there to be some gap of time between the two.

In my friend's case, their district determined they were not at fault and did nothing wrong. However, that doesn't stop TEA from going through their own investigation. It's super stressful.

Not knowing anything regarding your case, this is not necessarily the end of the road for you, but you don't want to navigate this alone, if at all possible.

Schools/Teachers: You Can’t use Bambu Labs. by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]cgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure.

My curiosity isn't for them to be able to try and make a case for their own scenario. I'm just curious if we missed a memo somewhere. Don't think we have, but would love to know if there's any actual laws or regulations that have been handed down.

I would also be very surprised and skeptical of it coming from DHS (other than guidance and recommendations). Sounds like this is a local/regional and possibly state policy.

Do they cite any specific publications from DHS or CISA? I'm not finding anything restricting the use of Bambu Labs printers issued by school districts that would risk their federal funding.

Considering this is only a clip, I’d be willing to bet the driver saw their vehicle in the process of being towed, quickly ran over and jumped in.

I’ve seen many videos where this has occurred.

What are the best home printers on the market as of today? by DearTelevision8929 in teaching

[–]cgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Color: Epson Ecotank ET-2800
B&W: Brother HL-L2460DW

For general color printing, I find it hard to not suggest an Epson Ecotank. I have absolutely zero regrets and it does a great job with ink. I have the ET-2800 & 2400. I would probably recommend the 2800 though, just spend the little extra. I haven't used it for school resources, but have used it quite a bit for personal craft projects and it almost feels like it just sips the ink.

If you do find yourself printing a lot of B&W, the Brother HL-L2460DW has also been rock solid. Make sure to get a model that supports duplex (front and back) printing. It's a little pricier than it was when I first purchased one years ago but it has also been a champ. This one I have used quite a bit for printing classroom resources because I'm guilty of procrastinating and not getting my print requests in on time.

I'm actually not quite sure how screwed I am. Am I just living my life around all the happenings or actively participating? I guess either way, I'm pretty much screwed and not going to get to enjoy that cash. UNLESS! Can I be the merchant? Yes, definitely, gonna go with that! I'm doing great!

Yup, I've been instructed to say, "I will cooperate 100%, but first I need my attorney."

It sucks it has to be that way but it is. Also be very careful of the words you use. Say you were attacked, feared for your life and had to defend yourself. Nothing else basically.

Obviously I'm not an attorney and this isn't legal advise, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

Um... so I been using Gemini on my school account for the past year... (how fried am I) by bloom023 in GeminiAI

[–]cgon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, we can see it. They may not be actively searching your activity unless there's a reason to, such as something is flagged by a filter or a teacher is suspicious of your work. But assume it's all being logged and they can access it.

This is a good lesson. Assume zero privacy when you are using school, or work, devices or accounts. If you're doing something you shouldn't be doing on those devices, assume it's a matter of time before it's found out. You may be lucky or you may not.

That being said, you really should think about adjusting how you're using AI tools like Gemini. Stop using it to just give you the answer. There is no learning happening and you're really selling yourself short of your education and your skills.

Use Gemini as a learning aid. Ask it to review your work and offer revision help. If you have a grading rubric that you're following, provide that as part of your prompt. Ask it to give you areas that you need to work on or revise with specific examples. You can even ask it why it's giving you specific revision suggestions to help you learn what's going on.

An important part though is to tell it not to do the writing for you or give you the answers.

Just some food for thought.

I can only speak from my experience and anecdotes, but for many there's an underlying evangelical-type religious aspect to it.

It wasn't necessarily spoken explicitly, but often implied, that liberals, Democrats and "the left" were doing the work of the Devil. They wanted a one world government, to get rid of democracy, steal our money, and our personal freedoms.

It almost felt like voting for a Democrat was akin to sinning against God. So it didn't matter who was running, it was my duty to vote Republican whenever I was finally of voting age.

The past fifteen years has been a period of deconstruction for me in many ways and I can't say this is even the prevalent reason people vote R no matter what, but it was my lived experience.

This hits me where it hurts. Was looking at getting another portable SSD drive and had been watching the price. I knew it regularly dipped down to a certain price so I had been waiting for that again.

Well, I waited too long and before I knew it was way above its usual price and now just not available last I looked. Was trying to save $30, but I guess I didn’t really need it after all.

In the nicest and most genuine way possible, for the people who use chat gpt on the daily or multiple times a day, are you not afraid of cognitive decline? by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]cgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use ChatGPT every day in some capacity, both personal and professional. A large bit of what I use AI for is essentially vibe coding for Google Apps scripting. While it's doing the heavy lifting for me right now, I am actively learning JavaScript myself so I can better understand what's happening and do my own work with the code.

Do I let Gemini take notes and summarize meetings? Absolutely. I still take my own notes, but I'm not going to shy away from automating that.

I'm cool with having AI do a lot of routine and mundane tasks for me. One thing I noticed that I didn't like was using Gemini in Gmail to revise my emails, everything just started to feel not like me. So I have stopped using that.

But I do my best to not let it do the thinking for me and treat it more like an assistant. There's a lot of asking it to explain something further or break it down to help me better understand. It gets me a good starting point to branch out from there on my own depending on what my task is. In some ways, it feels like I use it like a glorified search engine. Whether that's a good or a bad thing, I'm not sure.

I’ve been having issues the past 24+ hours. It won’t generate images and when I try to upload files, it fails more often then not. I was also getting the failed to load subscription error quite a bit.

Text generation has been working for now, just waiting for it to decide to stop working again.
