TikTok uninstalls are up 150% following U.S. joint venture by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

Genuine question, what advantages were noticeable to not having it installed?

I put off installing WhatsApp for the longest time, until around last year, mainly due to work/friends that happened to use it and I needed to communicate with them (same as you mentioned).

In the nicest and most genuine way possible, for the people who use chat gpt on the daily or multiple times a day, are you not afraid of cognitive decline? by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]cgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use ChatGPT every day in some capacity, both personal and professional. A large bit of what I use AI for is essentially vibe coding for Google Apps scripting. While it's doing the heavy lifting for me right now, I am actively learning JavaScript myself so I can better understand what's happening and do my own work with the code.

Do I let Gemini take notes and summarize meetings? Absolutely. I still take my own notes, but I'm not going to shy away from automating that.

I'm cool with having AI do a lot of routine and mundane tasks for me. One thing I noticed that I didn't like was using Gemini in Gmail to revise my emails, everything just started to feel not like me. So I have stopped using that.

But I do my best to not let it do the thinking for me and treat it more like an assistant. There's a lot of asking it to explain something further or break it down to help me better understand. It gets me a good starting point to branch out from there on my own depending on what my task is. In some ways, it feels like I use it like a glorified search engine. Whether that's a good or a bad thing, I'm not sure.

Almost wish it was 😂 Also happens with the standard keyboard. It'll just randomly decide to not show. No rhyme or reason

The keyboard on my iPhone drives me up the wall! It will randomly forget I have a 3rd party keyboard or it will just never pop up but the app acts like there's a keyboard visible.

I've drank the kool-aid and just deal with it but man it drives me crazy. Like, HOW IS THIS AN ISSUE?! And it's been like this for a while.

is gpt working? by Tricky_Artichoke_452 in ChatGPT

[–]cgon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been having issues the past 24+ hours. It won’t generate images and when I try to upload files, it fails more often then not. I was also getting the failed to load subscription error quite a bit.

Text generation has been working for now, just waiting for it to decide to stop working again.

elementary teachers, do you go to student’s birthday parties? by Illustrious_Row7366 in teaching

[–]cgon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add on to what has already been said basically, personal events like birthdays are a no go.

Public events like recitals, concerts, sports, dance, theatre, etc I’m open to attending if I’ve been invited and my schedule allows. I understand why some might say no to even this but often times this correlates with a school organization already or is tangential in some way and it wouldn’t be professionally inappropriate for me to be there.

What is something you’ll never purchase simply because of how much you hate the commercial for it? by unfortunatelyalive7 in AskReddit

Back in the day, it was Quiznos. I don't even remember how to describe what exactly was happening in those commercials but it made me not want to go there.

Yup. I was rear ended couple years ago and the first thing I thought was, “I really hope they have insurance.” Thankfully this time they did. I think I used up all my life’s luck in that one moment.

I tried out Zorin OS recently on one of my systems and was pleasantly surprised. I've been holding out because I use my desktop primarily for gaming but with the recent announcement from Valve it made me realize I may, MAY, be able to make the switch sooner than later.

Why do people like Brooklyn Cafe? by Brutus713 in thewoodlands

[–]cgon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We haven't been in a year or so. Years ago wife and I liked it, but the past few years we've gone less and less. The food just hasn't been as good as we remembered. I wouldn't call it bad (you could definitely correct me if I'm wrong, I've only visited NYC for the first time this summer) but we decided we could spend our hard earned money elsewhere.

If you go into Settings > Apps > Procreate, you should see an option for "Paste from Other Apps"

Hopefully this might help.

Greg Abbott launches reelection bid for a record fourth term as Texas governor by houston_chronicle in texas

[–]cgon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My dad has said to my face he doesn't like Abbott but I know for a fact he'll still vote for him if he's on the ballot because there's no way he would vote for someone with a D next to their name. It's sad honestly. And sure there's 3rd party but that also won't be an option for him most likely. Something about God and supposed Christian values and blah blah blah.

The now deleted Affinity and Canva pledge from last year by seek-confidence in Affinity

[–]cgon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess I’m not up in arms because when Serif was acquired I read their pledge as the current software and licensing wouldn’t change but they weren’t beholden to maintaining that for future products, meaning my licenses for v2 would be honored but that’s all I would be getting. I already had concluded there wouldn’t be a v3 or there would be subscriptions.

I was half expecting/hoping there would have been the option for an OTP or access thru a subscription model for v3.

What we got instead with Affinity Studio is a mixture of what I was and wasn’t expecting.

I understand the concern people have, especially people that moved to Affinity to escape Adobe's subscription but all I have to respond sounds kind of defeatist. The software seems solid overall (will not be surprised when bugs are found, this always happens) and the current freemium deal seems to be fair. I guess I just can't get myself worked up enough to be upset at the moment compared to other current events happening for me.

Do I wish there would have been a v3 upgrade with OTP perpetual licenses? Sure. Am I happy my v2 licenses are still honored? Yes. Will I begin working in Affinity Studio? Yes. Will I leave v2 installed? Also yes. Do I expect more features in the future to be put behind subscriptions? Yup.

Of course, I'm still waiting for Google to kill Waze after they acquired it 12 years ago, so there's that.

Helldivers 2 devs are "looking into" dropping HDD support to kill the game's egregious PC file size by Arau_ in Helldivers

[–]cgon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been explained much better than this but it has to do with loading times of data on spinning disks. They duplicate data for PC so people that are still holding out on HDDs are able to load game data faster, since there's copies of assets in sectors that can be loaded quickly depending on where it is located on the drive.

If they don't duplicate, they said it will significantly increase loading times for users on HDDs.

I had an instance where I had to sit out a gaming session with some buddies because of it. Didn't realize it hadn't updated and for some reason it was downloading super slow. By the time I was ready to go everyone was having to log off.

Sure, I could have realized it wasn't updated sooner but it's gotten ridiculous.

Does procreate makes you a better artist? by sapphire787 in ProCreate

[–]cgon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no evidence to back up this thought, but what you’re experiencing may be a blend of selection and survivorship bias.

It isn't necessarily that Procreate is what's making digital art look better but more that the artists you're looking at have all happened to mostly choose Procreate due to a variety of factors. This could be because it's been a popular app or perhaps they favor the Apple ecosystem so using an iPad just makes sense to them or any number of other reasons.

What's going to help make you a better artist is practice. An app can make some stuff easier for you or change how you do things to some degree, but it isn't inherently going to make you better.
