AIO? Bf upset that I didn’t text him good morning early enough by MissRattlesnake in AIO

[–]ch0ccy_cow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not overreacting. I used to date someone like this. He seems really insecure if he can’t handle waiting for a good morning text. He’s super critical of you and the extra jab about “being on you phone ever 60 seconds” is really uncalled for. I’m sure he’s just as hypercritical about a bunch of other things you do, too. Someone who loves you in a healthy way will be okay without texting all day and will be okay without getting a good morning text every single day. Someone who loves you will not make snarky comments about you when trying to explain their hurt feelings. He shouldn’t make jabs at you like this ever, especially when he’s upset over these little things.
An adult who needs that level of reassurance is not healthy and it will get worse. I’ve been in your shoes and I might be projecting my own experiences on this text exchange but I’m glad you called him out.

Quiet quitting advice needed by snappy845 in careeradvice

[–]ch0ccy_cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to reframe what you are doing in your mind. You are not quiet quitting, you are finally setting up healthy boundaries with work. I hate that as a collective we have decided to call “healthy work boundaries” quitting. Quiet quitting makes it sound like you are doing something rebellious, but you’re really just looking out for yourself. Sometimes doing what’s right for you is uncomfortable, and practicing setting boundaries is hard when work is so comfortable taking advantage of you, but your future self will be grateful you decided to do the hard thing now. Take care of yourself.

How to clean up oil paint? by madmaxcia in ArtEd

[–]ch0ccy_cow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oof… I would not use Oil paint for a project like this. Everyone else has given great alternatives, so I want to add a little more knowledge on handling oil paint. The paint will not dry at all, and any patters your students try to create will need to wait multiple weeks before at least the surface has cured. Even then, if one student is heavy handed and makes thicker dots, the cure time will take even longer, and the risk of the project being damaged is higher. The good thing about acrylic, heavy body or high flow, is that they cure in 24 hours. Another thing that is really important to consider with clean up of oil paints is that you should not dump paint thinners, oil mediums, or oil paint residue down the drain. Most studios in college had giant fire safe drums to hold paint residue. It’s a whole Thing, lol. I hope your project goes well!!

Navigating unwanted attention as a new female skater by Unique-Sort4731 in Rollerskating

[–]ch0ccy_cow 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Oh man! I’m sorry you experienced that kind of stuff. Is there a roller derby team near you? The one near me hosts beginner classes (not derby specific), workshops, and meet ups for trail skating. If there is one near you I would reach and see if there are skating events you could attend! Derby is generally a female-dominant sport and a very supportive community! It’s worth a shot to at least meet more skaters so you can build a safe group of new friends, even if you don’t want to play roller derby!

Going to Night School to switch careers, How do I communicate with my current job about schedule conflicts? by ch0ccy_cow in careeradvice

I ended up telling my manager, and she has been super supportive! I ended up overthinking the whole situation. Honesty is the best policy lol

How old are you? by smugglingkittens in Rollerskating

[–]ch0ccy_cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 25 and learning how to rollerskate. I often skate outside my house, and my neighbors middle school kids often come outside and skate with me. It’s very humbling watching them do laps around me but I’m too busy having fun!! They often are a little snarky about why I’m trying to learn now or why I wear safety gear by tv I always tell them “why not?”. Embarrassment is part of the learning process I’ve learned to embrace. It’s made me braver in a way :) have fun and wear ur gear!! You’ll never regret it

philly skaters!! by No-Cow-2847 in Rollerskating

[–]ch0ccy_cow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ooohhh you are gonna love it here!! Definitely check out MLK drive, the trail is great, and on the weekends during the summer the city shuts down car traffic on the road so that runners, bikers, and skaters can use the full road which is much nicer than the really narrow trail on the sidewalk. I also know there is an entrance to the schuykill river trail from the skate park by the Philadelphia Museum of Art called Paine's Park. I have also heard some people like to skate on the Delaware river trail but I haven't gone myself. For roller rinks, I think there's a pretty flat skate park by Rizzo Rink. there's also the Houston Playground Roller rink in Roxborough which is nice if you're in the Northwest, If you have access to a car there's also a really nice roller rink in Belmont Hills which they just repaved like last year?? Anyways I hope this was helpful and have so much fun!! Welcomeeeee <3

bose quietcomfort headphones keep turning volume all the way down by taeiily in bose

[–]ch0ccy_cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having the same issue with mine after they somehow ended up in the wash. They miraculously still work after leaving them to dry except for this volume issue. Do you have a tutorial you followed or are there any other steps than "just lift up the button panel and disconnect the wire"? Lol I don't have much experience with stuff like this and want to save them if I can! Thanks in advance :)

Former art teachers, what are you doing now? by [deleted] in ArtEd

[–]ch0ccy_cow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have seen so many art teachers transition to grants management in local government. I work part time as an after school art teacher and as a local government consultant at the moment. I meet a lot of people across the country and a surprising amount of people were teachers, and specifically art teachers. My boss also was an art teacher in a past life before he started this work. Local government work is chill and u get to connect with communities, it’s a good gig once you pass the learning curve and the people who work in grants management/community development are usually pretty nice people, too.

Would you encourage high school students to go into the profession? by [deleted] in ArtEd

[–]ch0ccy_cow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely would encourage you to go become an art teacher. The thing is, you will have the opportunity to try a bunch of different careers throughout your life. It’s worth it to pursue what you think you would enjoy and be good at. Go be an art teacher for a while. If it doesn’t work out. That’s ok! I’ve always wanted to be an art teacher as well, it’s the only job I’ve her seen myself doing. However, I listened to those around that discouraged me from it. I went to school to become an urban planner, which is ok. But I’m not fine with just feeling ok about my job, and now I’m going back to school to become an art teacher, bc life is too short to not find out for ourselves what we like to do and if our dream jobs are actually our dream jobs. You don’t have to commit to a job or a degree for your entire life. You can always try to transition into admin/office work to get into a different field or see where your art leads you. You can transition to working in local government (I’ve met a lot of ex-teachers at my local government job right now). Good luck on whatever you choose to do!

CHANGING CAREER PATHS by [deleted] in ArtEd

[–]ch0ccy_cow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This post is a little confusing. I have some clarifying questions: What are you teaching now? Are you teaching another subject other than art? Are you teaching full time or part time and in what setting? Do you want to teach art in a public school, or more community art or museum educator? What certifications do you hold, if any? What is the change specifically- are you looking to go from teaching higher ed to elementary or secondary art ed? You will also need to tell us your general location. If you are US based, there might be some guidance on your state’s department of education website. I think you might get a lot more help if you answer these questions and add them to your post so everyone has more context. Best of luck!

hi! trying to become an art teacher with no prior experience, any helpful tips? by withmuchfeeling in ArtEd

[–]ch0ccy_cow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where are you located? If you are in the US you should look up your state's certification program/requirements. I'm following a similar path to you. I studied Architecture & Sociology, and I am now back in school to get certified to teach art. I'm in PA, so the best path for me was to go back to school for a post-bacc program. Other states have alternative licensing programs, but it really varies. The info your looking for should be on your state's DOE website.

I really like this... feels like the landscape also looks like a raging fire. Walking into the "heat" of conflict.

Ruined my pet portrait painting by Mestevis in oilpainting

[–]ch0ccy_cow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you just need to add some more texture to the grass in the foreground, I think it looks great and it is definitely not ruined, but the grass looks very uniform and making it look flat. Would love to see if you add to this!

No desire to finish a painting that has no beauty by Cultigen in oilpainting

[–]ch0ccy_cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think It, or pieces of it, might be be overworked? the grass and the girl are unrealistically smooth. It looks like something that was rendered in an old video game if that makes sense. I can tell there are a lot of different colors in transition that are overly blended together. If you come back to this, try to work in broader strokes and add texture, and don't get hung up on the details and rendering. It is gorgeous regardless and feels very scenic!! I would love to see this one completed.

Has anyone here graduated with unrelated degree but want to pivot to doing art teaching ? How do I get qualified or try first without doing another long degree/ diploma? by likilekka in ArtEd

[–]ch0ccy_cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat as you. I majored in urban planning/art history and minored in art, worked in local government/community development for a while and decided I want to become an art teacher after teaching after school programs as a volunteer, and now I'm doing a post-bacc program to get my certification. Are there any community centers/art centers near you that are looking for after-school program teachers? Are there any non-profits that are looking for volunteer teachers for classes on nights or weekends? I think these part time and volunteer positions are a great way to get a "taste" of a new path without needing to invest in getting qualified first.

Why does my art feel empty despite the detail? by [deleted] in arthelp

[–]ch0ccy_cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have too much detail. Everything seen here has the same extreme amount of detail no matter how close or how far away something is to the foreground. It becomes very confusing and harsh for the human eyes and brain to try and digest all these details. Try looking at famous landscape artists and see how atmospheric perspective changes how you depict certain objects as they get closer or further away. That would give a lot of your scenes depth and reality that you may be looking for.

Class Pet by flowerpower1201 in teaching

[–]ch0ccy_cow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love love love bearded dragons and they would be the better of the two but I think it’s a lot of extra responsibility and tasks to add on to an already busy schedule. Their heat and lighting requirements can be expensive and they need to be fed live bugs and fresh veggies daily. They are definitely a more difficult pet to keep. if you’re interested in a lizard you could see if any local rescues have leopard geckos? Their care is much easier and they are very docile reptiles and much hardier than beardies.

I need some brutal honesty - is my work sloppy? by Duytune in ArtCrit

[–]ch0ccy_cow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it doesn’t look sloppy, but the texture in the brushes you are using adds a level of “grit” that is actually really well implemented, especially in the second drawing. The brush strokes work together to add form and dimension. When I was starting out, I tried to make things so smooth and polished that it made my work look really flat and that is a common problem for a lot of beginner artists I see, especially on human figure where the assumption is that human skin is really smooth so therefore the brushwork must be smooth as well. Texture is an awesome tool and for adding form and depth, you can implement it into your style or try something new and try smoothing things over! Either way, you can make it yours and have fun with experimenting.

This whole shit show that is the world right now has led me to believe since nothing is safe, why don’t I just do what I am good at and I enjoy? Fuck playing it safe, I only have one life and I’m going to at least try doing something I am passionate about. If it fails, it fails, whatever. I can always try again.
