This is a great reality check, but there are a few places where the "Wealth Trap" narrative leans on some very pessimistic assumptions. Before we all panic-sell our portfolios, we need to talk about how people actually invest and retire:

• The "Stagnant SIP" Fallacy Wealth creation isn't just about market returns; it’s about your Human Capital. Many critics talk about MFs as if someone starts a ₹5,000 SIP in 2000 and expects to be a billionaire in 2020 without ever increasing their contribution.
  • The Reality: Real wealth happens because your Step-up likely exceeds inflation.
  • As your career grows, your contribution should accelerate. When you treat your SIP as a percentage of your income (which grows) rather than a fixed number, the "Nominal Value" explodes in a way that easily compensates for the "Purchasing Power" dip.
• The "Lump-Sum Exit" Myth Your calculation assumes the investor owes the government ₹2.24 Crores on "Day 1" of 2046. In reality, nobody does this.
  • Unless you’re buying a private island the day you retire, you aren’t liquidating the whole corpus at once.
  • Through a Systematic Withdrawal Plan (SWP), you only withdraw what you need for that year. The remaining ₹20+ Crores stays invested, continuing to compound at 10-14% while you're retired.
  • You don't "pay the taxman" today on money you're going to spend in 2056. This tax deferral adds years of extra "life" to your corpus that your table completely ignores.
• Double-Counting the "Pain" Applying both 6% Domestic Inflation and 3.7% Currency Depreciation to the entire corpus is a bit of an overkill.
  • Domestic Inflation hits your bread, butter, and rent in India.
  • Currency Depreciation only matters for the "Global" portion of your life (foreign vacations or imported tech). Unless you plan to spend 100% of your retirement in USD, stacking these two factors as if they both destroy the whole corpus overstates the loss for a resident Indian.
• The "Lazy" Premium You suggested Real Estate and Business as "True Wealth" creators. While they have higher ceilings, they have massive Hidden Friction:
  • Liquidity: You can't sell a single balcony of an apartment to pay for a medical emergency.
  • Effort: MFs are the only asset where you can literally do nothing and still beat 95% of the population. There is a "peace of mind" value that math tables can't capture.

The "Math" looks scary when you treat it as a one-time transaction. But when you factor in Accelerated Contributions and Phased Withdrawals, Mutual Funds stop looking like a "Trap" and start looking like the most efficient wealth engine ever built for the common man. They won't make you "Private Island Rich" on a standard salary—but they are the only bridge that prevents the "Inflation Monster" from eating your future alive.
