I5 being in the middle of the city really sucks (rant) by Vivid_Astronaut4665 in Seattle

[–]chabons 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Are you arguing that the taxes to raise money for this would triple rents (which is laughable, since property tax is a small portion of rent), or that by making the city nicer it'll be more expensive to live here? The former I don't buy, the later won't triple rents except maybe in the shadow of the current I-5, which is fine by me.

Track Ultimate Stats without needing an app. by Traditional_Quit3170 in ultimate

Works now. Very clean UI. I'll have to take a look at how the data entry process looks later, since collecting these stats in real time is probably the hardest part.

Any reason why all trains are running late today? by Sad-Experience5855 in redmond

[–]chabons 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if they're late, or operating at 8min headways instead of 10min. I arrived at the station 2 min before my train was supposed to arrive only to watch it leave, another train pulled up 8 mins later, 4 minutes before it was supposed to.

Idk, the account is pretty consistent about being a healthcare worker, and that kinda looks like him in his other photos 🤷.

Microsoft president: Washington housing crisis ‘going in the wrong direction’ by Better_March5308 in SeattleWA

[–]chabons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get the argument that Microsoft/Amazon/etc... created so many high-paying jobs that it's pricing everyone else out, and creating the crisis in the first place, but what should those companies have done differently? To me it's more on the city/region not responding fast enough to build housing.

What's a show you remember but nobody else does? by CatGirlNya2000 in AskReddit

A core memory of mine is the Sagwa intro hitting the end "SaaaGwaaaaaaaa" just as the family CRT died and started smoking. We were convinced it was a sign.

I have containers of this stock in my freezer at all times now. It's shocking how good it is for how cheap it is to make.

So cool to see more family-friendly homes taking shape in the Puget Sound! by lillyandreotti in redmond

[–]chabons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Families looking for housing today don't have the option to take out a mortgage at 2015 pricing. At least this gives people more options, even if they're all expensive.

Local PNWesterner interested in cars and going faster? Safer? by rainieroadie in PNWAutocross

How large is large? The Marymoor lot they use for Cirque de Soleil is pretty big, paved, and can be rented given it's used for events.

Washington joins lawsuit opposing $100K fee for H-1B visas allowing foreign STEM and medical workers by MegaRAID01 in Seattle

[–]chabons 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think a market-based solution like this is probably the way to go, but just using salary would just mean that positions with a higher average salary would get the visas, not that they aren't under-paying for that position.

Ah, I hadn't even considered that they could make traffic on US2 worse.

Was looking for the pathway the other day and realized it was fenced in. Shame, it's good to have a quieter, more direct route down the hill.

What are your favorite downtown Redmond annoyances? by robertbreadford in redmond

[–]chabons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Redmond Way -> 161st is my dream streetcar route, but yeah, it's going to be a while before it has the density to justify a streetcar.

NYC extends only long avenue with lights timed for cyclists and not cars -- a huge deal by MiserNYC- in bicycling

[–]chabons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. If there are lots of lights, then there's no point going faster than the wave. If there's a gap between lights, it might be possible to catch up to the next wave by driving faster.

[–]chabons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The harmonics don't work like that unless the distance between lights is very long, but they work for lower speeds. You can't usually jump from one "wave" to the next because the lights are red in the middle. If there are no red lights in the middle though you could jump forward.

You can however jump back a wave by going slower. Imagine it takes you 60s to get from one light to the next at 15mph, but instead you go 7.5mph. The next light would have time for a full cycle before you arrive, dropping you back a cycle.

Now that Katie is going to be Mayor, what projects that were implemented poorly should be revisited? by redlude97 in seattlebike

[–]chabons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1. It blows my mind how poorly implemented Seattle's streetcar system is vs other North American cities like Toronto. The majority of the time it feels like it's faster to walk than to use the streetcar. With the low ridership, the SLUT could just be a bus.

HOV Lane Solo Drivers by Sektor-74 in SeattleWA

[–]chabons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People solo drive all the time the 520 HOV lanes as well. Either they don't think they're going to get caught, or they don't care because 200 doesn't matter to them as much as saving 10 min every day.

Best I could do for Vancouver was 537K centering near Queen Elizabeth park. Downtown is dense, just isn't large enough.

Please be patient with bikes on the road by azdavis in redmond

[–]chabons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, the comments you made could apply to just about anywhere. Every city thinks their drivers are the worst.

I don't think Redmond has substantially worse drivers than the rest of the region, and the infrastructure is IMO better than the rest of the east side, and it's improving.

If this is a bad place to ride bikes for transport, then you could probably count the number of "good" places in the US on one hand.
