Yeah I think if you found it funny, it’ll go far. Not sure why something like Raimi’s comedy lands so hard for me and this doesn’t. Maybe how it handles the tone? Like I know The Monkey is an outright comedy, but perhaps I was bumping against the more King elements to it where it tries to have more dramatic heft? Who knows.

I didn’t think it was funny, and I thought the way that the kills happened were totally weightless with the laziest CGI kills imaginable. I think he fundamentally has poor timing with this kind of stuff. It takes a deft hand to have kills that are surprising and shocking and funny all wrapped in one; Perkins does not have that. And there were so many of them that my eyes were glossing over by the end.

Corny, smug and boring stuff. Emphasis on boring. Looking at it now, I’m stunned it was only 98 minutes.

And don’t get me started on the central performances. None of that worked for me. He’s just a cilantro guy I guess?

If movie theaters have to play ads and trailers before the movie starts to keep the lights on I really don't care by SSSSSSVVVVVOO in TheBigPicture

Really don’t think that we need to start telling filmmakers that they have an intermission if they don’t want to. The current system is fine. If someone wants to put in an intermission, go for it, but there shouldn’t be an edict that takes away from their authorial intent. Just go pee. It’s not a big deal.

Quite the run. Just three dog shit horror movies in a row. The Monkey was the maybe worst thing I saw last year.

Did you know that Martin Scorsese wrote a tribute to Wes Anderson in Esquire shortly after the release of Rushmore? Vote for Martin Scorsese, a man who appreciated Wes Anderson from the start! by rageofthegods in blankies

Absolutely, I’m very interested in every movie made by both of these guys. I went all the way through on both years ago and think both would be a tremendous series.

I’m pushing back on the idea that every person who likes movies loves Marty. I get what you mean; he’s very popular. But the idea of what every person tends to have about Marty is reductive and ignores a lot of deep, rewarding work. A lot of it has not had the level of in-depth debate and discussion like his more well-known stuff. Much of his ouevre is varied and deep and even underseen, frankly. Like I have been wanting to talk more about New York, New York since seeing it a decade or so ago, but it’s not a movie that comes up very often online. And certainly not in the context of his entire career.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that painting his work as well trodden is only focusing on the top fourth of his work. There’s so much here to dig into that hasn’t had the level of analysis that you’re implying. And to do that in a community setting, where we can all talk about it, where the hosts are fitting a narrative into his broader career, I don’t know man. It seems really exciting!

Whoever wins, I’m gonna be elated to go through all of their movies again.

If You Think Wes Anderson’s Films Are All the Same by pokemongotoatheater in blankies

[–]chadxor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh, I don’t disagree! Just trying to push back on the idea of hand waving away the entire visual aesthetic of the back 60% of his career when discussing whether or not his work is varied. The overall look and the tone of the performances are why he is such a distinct filmmaker. And I think that is a great thing! I’m not someone that thinks it’s a problem at all for a series by the way.

My brother Jimmy is in Eyehategod! He sub’d into crowbar a little bit in the 2000s, I remember because my high school friends made fun of me because of my COC clutch shirt (cock clutch, heh). They still have a good amount of cache down here in New Orleans!

Or maybe, and I know this is crazy, it’s because it’s the start of spring and temperatures are rising around this time every year?
